  1. Changes need to be made at the grass root level on Canadians Organizing a Rally For Net Neutrality · · Score: 4, Informative

Traffic shaping and deep packet inspection are nothing new for some Canadians. Close to three years ago I canceled my Rogers Cable Internet service because they were using deep packet inspection to throttle torrent traffic. I hate the restrictions, and hope that the CRTC will implement a rule for Net Neutrality, but the chances of this happening are next to nil. I'd like to say that people should cancel their service with these providers and move to a less restrictive service, but the number of choices available for open ISPs in Canada is shrinking every day. The ISP I switched to Storm was recently bought out by a larger carrier ExplorNet, and my fear is that my service will see changes as well. The only thing we can hope for, truely is that Michael Geist can defend our right to a Internet devoid of the restrictions and practices that the major ISP are forcing their paying subscribers to live by.

The way that Blockbuster and any other large rental stores work is on a profit sharing agreement with the different movie houses. Thats why blockbuster will order a hundred copies of a movie, and then offer Guarantee's that the movie will be there or next time its free. This way they don't loose money when the movie is all rented, and they don't have to pay the $80 or so dollars for each copy, like how the old system with VHS which was known as Priced to Rent, as opposed to when a movie was released to the public at $20, which is Priced to Sell.

This is also the reason why you can go to Walmart the same day it is released and buy the movie without having to wait six months after its released.

In response to ETEQ's question. I just completed a rollout between my house, my dads house, my cousins house and my uncles house of directional WIFI.

I went to the local home depot and picked up four of those exterior grade electrical boxes with seals around the door, and where the cables come into the box. Inside I was able to mount D-Link DI-604+ wireless router, two signal boosters. There still is tons of room left over to mount anything you could want inside, and its water proof, so no worries about moisture causing any damage. And to test the seals of the boxes, we tested each with all the equipement mounted inside, and then sprayed them with pressure washers for ten minutes and not a drop in signal quality.

  21. Structured Wiring. on Best Options for a Home Entertainment Network? · · Score: 1
When we built our house we built it with just this in mind, and the greatest investment we made was in structured wiring.

When we ran the LAN/Video/Audio/Voice through the house, we ran it all on a single cable that contained two CAT 5e cables, two coax cables, and a fibre strand for anything that might come up in the future. With this setup, the wiring closet for the network, also became the distribution point for the satelitte, distributed video, PBX. And for internet/streaming audio/video I built small BSD boxes that connect the network with the TV's around the house.

But also keep in mind that WLAN is necessary as well, the video cameras in the house transmit over WLAN thereby elimating any cables to them, and we use it for our portable devices around the house as well (Laptops/Pocket PC's)

    Ain't technology grand???

  22. On the side of good. on War Driving To Be Protected In NH · · Score: 3, Insightful

If someone installs a Wireless Access Point in their house and then doesn't properly secure it from someone accessing it, it is their own fault. If you left your house unlocked and went away on vacation, whos fault is it that your house got broken in? If you don't take the proper precautions and secure your network yourself, then you only have yourself to blame if someone willfully access your systems and uses them for their own purposes. I have no empathy for people who invest in this technology, but do no invest in the security that is required to protect yourself. The information is provided by the vendors for a reason, and it is the home users choice wether or not to use it. If someone has questions on how to do something, there is always someone, or something willing to answer those questions. NH has drawn a line in the sand and has sided with those who use wardriving for one reason or another, wether it be malicious intent, or like myself who is interested in seeing the spread of this technology, and how well of a grasp people have on its security technologies built in.
