I think it is mostly vapor. Enderle, the famed SCO analyst, has his hands in it and I immediately distrust anything he works with and endorses.
I don't know whether the FUD department at MS realizes this yet, but they've got a powerful weapon in Enderle. Whenever an exciting new tech comes along that might threaten MS, all they have to do is have Enderle comment positively, and then the new technology will have zero credibility.
Sputnik showed that something that was theoretically possible was also possible in practice. In other words, it was an experiment. Doesn't that qualify as science?
Use of slave labor wasn't too productive, as the slave-workers had no incentive to work effectively and with quality. This resulted in sub-pair products. [I'm sure you mean sub par.
But to amplify your comment, countless lives were saved because many slave laborers actively sabotaged production. Slave laborers in munition factories that survived the war reported that they did all they could to deliver duds.
My fellow Americans, when the Canadians come flooding across the border with guns in their hands and murder in their eyes, don't go crying to your leaders about the world's longest uncontrolled border.
You say that as if Canada were a sovereign nation and not part of the United States.
Yet you cannot say that the V2 program had no affect on military decisions. Part of the reason why Ike gave Monty the go ahead for Market-Garden was because Churchill was pressuring Ike to do something about the V2 launch sites.
Which might be the real reason we invaded Iraq. If the US can exert more control over the oil supply, we can slow or even strangle the economic development of potential rivals.
And the Chinese know this, which is why they're in a major push to expand their nuclear power industry.
Hey, I just noticed I'm replying to you, khasim! What's up? =)
What's with torn bills in Mx?

I wonder if this has anything to do with some experiences I had in Mexico. It seems that nobody will accept ripped or torn bills, and the reason I was given is that the banks won't accept them. Of course, I discovered this the hard way; the bill I accepted wasn't really torn that badly, but I had a hell of a time with it, and finally wrote it off. It was a 20 peso note, roughly equivalent to $2.00.
The other experience was over a 50 peso note with the tiniest piece missing from the corner. It really wasn't discernible without extremely careful inspection. I was buying food, ice, and lots of liquor for a going away party for a fellow student, and the liquor store wouldn't take the bill! I ended up getting into a big argument with the owner, which escalated as far as profanity when I began to walk out without putting the items I wanted to purchase back on the shelves. Honestly, I was quite proud that my Spanish had progressed to where I could understand someone's foul language and then give it back to him double.
I went to another store a block away and had no problem paying with the 50 peso note, even when I pointed out the tiny flaw on the corner. The owner of that store was apparently happy to accept it when it was accompanied by a 500 peso note and a few 100s (It was a big party!) When I told him of the other store owner, he merely rolled his eyes.
Which is why I have lost a lot of respect for McCain, now that he is campaigning for Bush. I voted for McCain in the 2000 Primary because he seemed independent and not beholden to anyone. When did the Maverick become George's Bitch?
Did you read the Cheerleader Squad Captain's memo about Bush repeatedly not showing up for Cheerleader Practice or any Games, ostensibly because he, "uh, had some some stuff he had to do, uh. . ..for his father, yeah, that's it. Political type stuff."
I still lament the fact that Bush beat McCain in the 2000 primary, I think McCain would have been a better president than either Gore or, obviously, Bush.
I used to lament this as well, but I really lost a lot of respect for McCain when he began campaigning for Bush, after the dirty tricks the 2000 Bush campaign played on him. I voted for him in the primary back then. I regret giving him my support.
Same with Dole, after his comments about Kerry's wounds, and how Kerry probably didn't deserve the purple hearts. I regret voting for him, and I've lost even more respect for him than I have for McCain.
I thought that my party had been hijacked by a group of extremist criminal thugs, but now I'm really beginning to wonder about some of the people I thought were OK.
I thought there were other disgruntled Republicans out there, but it seems like everyone has gotten swept up by the lies or has joined a cult. It's a religion. There is no other way to explain this immunity towards the facts.
Actually, Khasim had a pretty interesting point, but you're so busy orgasming over the rhetoric that you can't see it. You can't stop being a herd animal unless you are first aware that you are a herd animal. It's of little use to proclaim your intelligence and freewill when you're part of a stampede.
Whether or not he's got his facts right, Curtman ain't no troll. I have some other choice names I might call him =), but troll he is not. He is sincere.
Excellent suggestion. My brother and two sisters are all elementary school teachers, and they buy supplies for their classes out of their own pocket. The oldest has told me that she spends a couple of hundred a year as a minimum. She's also the one who hates receiving gifts for christmas and her birthday, so I started giving her school supplies for her students at these occasions. She seems pretty happy with that.
This practice was developed because the equipment used for the online was incredible expensive, while the equipment for offline editing was relatively cheap. You don't want to do your creative decision making on a $2 Million machine (with corresponding high rental rates) when you can accomplish the same on $10,000 - 20,000 system, and spit out an EDL.
When the Avid first came along, it went against this model, as it was more expensive then linear offline systems. However, it made editors much more productive (and it was still cheaper than the online systems of the day), so it did represent a total cost savings.
I know what you meant by "rough edit" stage, but it's really not the correct phrase. I can't think of a better one, other than "the offline". Maybe just the creative part of the editing process.
I was never a big Amiga person, but if I recall, Lightwave 3D was a part of the Toaster package, and was a specific reason many people bought it in the first place.
ST makes a helluva lot more sense when you see the Kirk/Spock/McCoy thing as a love triangle.
Young go getter in Star Fleet hooks up with older Medical officer. When young go-getter gets his own command, he hooks up with young, exotic science officer and drops his older lover.
This really accounts quite well for the bitchy rivalry between Spock and Bones. Next time you watch ST, think of this subtext during all interactions between McCoy and Spock. McCoy is obviously the jealous ex, and Spock is the smug current lover.
So, why does Kirk put the moves on every attractive female alien? Maybe he's bi, but more likely, he's keeping it in the closet. Can't let anyone, especially the higher ups at Starfleet, know he is homosexual. So, I guess society in the future will be just as repressive as it is now.
By the way, this is not an original idea. I think I first read about the idea a long time ago, but I might also have heard the theory from a gay geek friend. I'll have to ask him if he remembers.

But at least this now explains why the US is being run by a gang of criminals.

It's even more amazing. He admitted that he lacked knowledge in a subject area (history)!
Of course, his ignorance of history didn't stop him from posting in the first place, so we can all breath a little easier.

It could be worse. You could have 3rd Edition ADD. . .

No, this is a referendum on the American People as a whole. Will we give in to fear and greed or not?

We suffer from the disease of Rhetoric.

No, you're not making any sense. You're almost sounding like Dr. Gene Ray.
It is hard for me to take you seriously for two reasons. First, you don't know how Slashdot works.
And it's impossible to take you seriously.
Greek Polytheism. Or even Classical Polytheism, which would also include the Romans.

It's not a switcher, it's an editing/finishing rig. Nothing to do with live video.
