if a spammer gets an account easily with gmail, he can use it to send emails to people.
GP doesn't make sense as a reply, but I doubt Gmail would be a good platform for spammers, certainly no more so than Hotmail et al. I'm guessing that sending out a few bulk emails would get your account and IP flagged pretty quickly, especially if the messages set off the spam filters.
I don't know about you, but I connect to a mail server using SSL, and the server is not operated by my ISP. Are they going to log some unintelligible bits?
It's fairly easy for an ISP to set up a man-in-the-middle attack, if they don't mind giving you a bad SSL cert. It's evil and obvious, but certainly possible if they're required by law to do so.
Wow, you're an idiot. Go read the fucking post again:
Go f**k yourselves, Remedy! I'm not switching to Vista just to play one of your damned games! You want me to play your game? I expect a copy of Vista to come with it, and we all know that that's NOT going to happen.
That was a rant, not an "argument". You made a piss-poor analogy and got called on it.
Given that they're being backed by Microsoft, I wouldn't count on it. Microsoft has their hands in enough good game developers to force the adoption of Direct3D 10, even if it will hurt them commercially. Fuck 'em. I certainly won't be buying any game that requires Vista and obsoletes all but the newest video cards.
A new Quest for Glory game would be incredible, though I think QFG5 was a bit of a letdown. I really doubt Sierra will revive the series, but you can always bug the Coles to make something new.
No, you're not the only person. Morrowind and Oblivion are garbage if you think of all the potential that Daggerfall hinted at. What's the point of an open-ended RPG if you can't do anything to affect the world?
And what about those fuckers who think islam is a religion of hatred and violence and kill and/or wrongfully imprison hundreds?
The number of said fuckers is shockingly high. From two separate polls: 33% think "mainstream Islam encourages violence against non-Muslims", 34% think Muslims living in the U.S. are "sympathetic to the al-Qaeda terrorist organization." And you wonder why Bush's approval rating never drops below 35% for very long.
To send an executable file (including MS documents) we are advised to send them as encrypted zip files.
What the fuck? Why not just eliminate ALL these problems by requiring the use of PGP internally? Enigmail is absurdly easy to use, and I'm sure there are plugins even for Outlook.
Well, that's mostly because of the nature of the thing. Linux is just the kernel, whereas Windows and MacOS X include everything from the kernel up through the desktop and some applications. Rest assured that KDE 4, for example, will have pretty colors!
Comedy Central censors the "god" in goddamn even after 11pm. The Colbert Report even referenced this once with a bullet point during The Word. I truly have no fucking clue why they do that, but have no problem airing South Park episodes like Scott Tenorman Must Die essentially uncensored. They're not bound by FCC rules.
After years of bouncing back and forth, I've finally decided to move everything over to Linux and ext2 or reiserfs partitions, even though I do Windows development professionally. With a Core 2 Duo processor, I can run XP in a VM fast enough for all my needs. KDE4 should be superior to Vista in every way once it's released this year. I'll probably even throw the KDE team some money.
Wouldn't the simpler way of ensuring a legitimate upgrade be to take your old XP key alongside the Vista upgrade key, then check them both with WGA? Considering that there's still no real Vista activation crack, it's probably even secure.
No. If there's more than one person involved in a project, an issue tracker is a huge help. Hell, even if it's a solo project that nobody else will ever use, it's a good way to organize your thoughts and keep track of what you still need to do. It takes about five minutes to set up a system like Mantis.
They are basically in the same position as pre-iPod Apple.
That's a strange comparison. Apple produces a ton of quality, unique software. They aren't interchangeable with hundreds of other PC builders like Dell is.
Here, enjoy. And there are very popular private trackers like BitMe and Elbitz that are specifically dedicated to educational material. If it's possible to put into electronic form, there's a community that fills the niche.
What extra features do you get from the new MS search compared to the old and how does it compare to the user unfriendly find and grep on cygwin or *nix?
Vista's search feature is indexed, so the appropriate comparison would be to slocate. Vista attaches a shiny GUI and the ability to search through some metadata. It doesn't even find strings in the contents of a Word file in the Documents folder, so it's not as useful as Google Desktop.
Unfortunately, it's still better than KDE. KDE4 (see Tenor) should do everything Vista can and more, but it won't be out for a few months at least. Give me a fast search feature in Konqueror and I'll never want to use anything else.
(hardware compatibility that could rival Windows and/or Mac OSX)
Hmmm? Linux already supports more hardware out of the box than Windows does. I'm not talking ancient SCSI cards either; I mean components like an onboard Intel PRO 10/100 NIC from a few years ago that requires an extra driver on XP SP2, but works automagically with e100 on Linux. The only segment where Linux falls down is on very new hardware.
I think you're both looking for Tor. Works great, if you don't mind speeds comparable to dialup.
Don't forget "gay sex" and "flag burning".

Fair enough. I agreed with most of your post; "social robots" are scary. It was that last sentence that elicited my WTF reaction.
Wow, that was one of the strangest posts I've seen here. Is sociology now evil? If you're not interested, don't read the fucking study.
"What really matters is what you like, not what you are like. Books, records, films -- these things matter."
