I agree with you there. To add... Without Apple then Windows 95 would never have existed. Without Linux I believe Windows XP/2003 would never have happened.
Personally I would love to run a scan of Windows and compare to Linux code. Microsoft did some major stability work from 2000 to XP releases. Sure would love to know whether it included GPL code (thus their facination with getting it declared illegal).
Not to be a troll but it's things like that which annoy me about Microsoft. When I asked people how good XP was the only thing most people would say is it has a fresh new interface. Da GUI rocks!!
Ok.. what else... well.. Da GUI Rocks!!
Right. So much for a great new Microsoft product.
I know there are more features in XP but people just don't see them. Same with KDE/GNOME. Some features are off by default (cursor to hourglass switcharoo). Personally that's a VERY minor problem compared to the last time my computer was taken over by some unknown entity and used to DDOS attack windowsupdate.com:-)
Oh yeah.. and it was patched and running anti-virus software. With linux I simply have an iptables default policy of DROP and open what I want from there.
Your point is well taken however I usually equate Microsoft with the public school system. Sure there are things the public schools are doing that are working well. Overall public schools are not considered the best places to obtain an education.
Same goes for Microsoft. They unfortunately just don't do everything well. Sure a few things are great but like public schools they overall fail.
To answer your question usually what I've seen are comments while playing TFC/CS that trashes on a country. Usually something like "I hate playing on American servers" or something like that. It seems the attitude is VERY different on foreign servers.
I don't play on servers outside the U.S. normally. Any ping over 200ms is just unacceptable to me. Hard to frag when you are lagging:-)
Personally I wish people would calm down and just have fun. I've been in servers where people are just having a blast while on other's it degenerates to a shouting/cussing match. Thank goodness for the mute option!
" Master plan : Sue anybody with a 3 letter acronym."
Does this mean when it's all said and done they will take themselves to court? Probably sue themselves over the stupidity IP. Anyone else claiming to be more stupid than SCO will be sued also.
It's sad really. Personally I'm still waiting for SCO to send me an invoice. I have 7 Linux systems running at home and a dozen at work. When SCO sends the invoice I plan on suing them. Might even get to retire when I'm done:-)
Personally I would return my unopened box of Caldera Linux. Version 6 sucked. I've been using RedHat and SUSE for years. Figured returning the Caldera box would save in landfills and wasted space on my shelf.
I understand what you're trying to say but consider Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or even 98. Compared to other Desktop's currently available I'd say these were pathetic attempts at a desktop. Still people made them work. The same goes with KDE or Gnome (or any other's out there). Sure it takes time but it will be at the level people such as yourself are looking for.
"NT can do as much about bad apps crashing as Linux or any other decent OS can"
This has not been my experience with either platform. Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 applications crash and take the whole thing down in an instant. How often have you seen a Linux system crash because of a badly written application? Hardly here and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.
"IBM is being so hypocritical. If the issue is a non-issue, why don't they indemnify their customers?"
What kind of lousy comment is that? I guess I expected better from Sun. They don't indemnify their customers nor does Micro$oft. Sure perhaps they do to the purchase price of their software but in a lawsuit of this nature (IBM vs. SCO) we don't see a single company out there protecting their customers in the fashion being 'claimed'.
It's a bunch of crap. Read the warrenty. It's clear as mud I realize however that's what they will base indemnification on (based on state laws of course)
I believe so. Though it definitely sounds like our Government had better get together and either bless or curse p2p so people can stop guessing. The only grounds we have to go on currently is the Supreme Court decision which may not mean Kazaa is covered. The Government hasn't stated whether it's a legitimate use. Then again.. they haven't said it isn't:-)
That is what the Supreme Court stated years ago when dealing with the VCR issue. If you are able to record without breaking any encryption then you can make a copy.
I'm recording shows Like Star Trek Enterprise and burning to DVD format for myself and friends. These shows are all plainly viewable without any special devices (beyond your every day TV and cable).
Just because you downloaded them from Kazaa doesn't make a difference. It's the same material.
So if I record music from my radio I'm violating the law?
Didn't the Supreme Court state years ago for Cable TV (for example) that as long as your not breaking encryption (like with HBO and others) then you have the right to make a copy of any program you want. Prime time TV for instance. I've recorded TV shows for many years including MASH and Star Trek. This has very little difference over recording a TV show or a radio program including music. The only difference is the RIAA doesn't like it and is trying to make it look legal.
Before you know it... they will start suing saturday morning cartoon makers. Watched them this past weekend with my kids. You want to see fantasy and violence? Spend an hour or two and be surprised.
Sure GTA is a violent game. When I was a kid I played very violent games and nobody is dead... yet;-)
"I'm so sick of this crap with SCO and Linux...Why doesn't someone with POWER, take this BS claim and prove once and for all, that this claim is a lie or in fact prove; that the claim is true!"
Maybe we can help them along the road to recovery. I'm thinking we should create a spamaholic group and charge the spammers $2500 annually (admitance charges you know). They after all paid $3000 for their spam group. We're cheaper and can help them overcome their addiction to spam.
I know there are missionaries who get a little overly zealous. I had a few who I worked with when I was out knocking on doors who drove me crazy. Needless to say we didn't get along very well. Probably because they didn't understand that people don't like to be pissed off. Someone says go away that's good enough for me:-)
Ahhh.. My mistake. Perhaps not exactly a transfer of ownership but a transfer of rights. Still... SCO/Caldera still has this COPYING document provided with their kernel source available even today.
"By the way, McBride himself is a mormon, which explains a hell of a lot of things."
If that's true then he'll be excommunicated when the SEC is finished prosecuting him and his little company.
Actually... now that I know that he's a Mormon I'll be happy to file a complaint with the church. Once the proof is there for all to see he'll be asking himself "was it worth it?"
"Transfer of copyright ownership without express written authority of all proper parties is null and void."
Gentlemen.. I have before me a document provided by SCO/Caldera called "COPYING". It was found in their Kernel source code and is STILL AVAILABLE ON THEIR WEB SITE TODAY! This document spells out that we have full rights to use/modify as we see fit the code.
In essence, doesn't this constitute a transfer of ownership?
I've read the full document and basically it speaks for itself. This guy has been adopted into the human race. Sad.

What's interesting is it sounds like napster is coming back this thursday...
CNN article here
Also check out napsters web site. They have a number of amusing animations here.
Quite the surprise. I'm interested in what they have to offer and how well it works out for all.

Just some thoughts.

Not to mention I would be VERY curious if the wma.dll's avaialble on the web would still be able to play these. Only one way to find out :D

Sue anybody ...yes.. merit to lawsuit? probably not. Unless of course you were the one involved with infringing their code.
If someone wrote infringing information in the wall street journal and I read it, does that make me liable? Not a chance.
"What fuel is there on the moon?"

Dylithium Crystals. What else is there
"I'm so sick of this crap with SCO and Linux...Why doesn't someone with POWER, take this BS claim and prove once and for all, that this claim is a lie or in fact prove; that the claim is true!"
Can't... SCO is a subsidiary of RIAA.
Goes to show the mentality of these spammers.
Maybe we can help them along the road to recovery. I'm thinking we should create a spamaholic group and charge the spammers $2500 annually (admitance charges you know). They after all paid $3000 for their spam group. We're cheaper and can help them overcome their addiction to spam.

hehehe... Depends on your point of view.

Personally I was suffering withdrawl. Too many days since the last security patch. Now maybe I can get rid of this twitch ;-)

That's why I only use Windoze for my gaming addiction. Why would anyone risk running it in their business is beyond me.
