I guess sending all our nuclear weapons towards this thing would be a good way to disarm countries like Russia, India, and Pakistan. After all, we do want them to reduce their supplies, don't we? I guess the government does.

How about this? Coordinated Worldwide Interplanetary Nuclear Strike Day! Circa 3 days before predicted impact.

My personal favorite is nachos. Any topping will work. There's a really good store for spicy chips, salsa, nacho cheese and chipotle bean dip. I first discovered this place in Door County, Wisconsin. Their online store is here.

  8. Damage on ISO Could Withdraw JPEG Standard · · Score: 1, Insightful

If anything like this happens, it would obviously wreak havoc on the internet. We'd be forced to use clunky, bloated, Microsoft bitmaps. So, would owning your JPEGs now be akin to downloading Metallica MP3s, or cracking a program? This is worse than trying to copyright nothingness, or pop-unders, as X10 tried. -"Hey, you guys wanna buy some JPEGs?" --"If you get caught using that..." -"I know, I know, I made the original myself." I'm not really worried, mostly because of the last lines in the article, but in America, we do have stricter laws. But I've never seen anythink like this before.

  13. Stability on AMD's 64-Bit Chip · · Score: 2, Interesting

Running programs in a hybrid 32/16 bit environment puts a serious strain on the Windows OS: It crashes. Pure systems do not crash as often. I really wonder if the problem will be magnified in a 32/64 bit environment?

  14. AMD Reigns Supreme on AMD's 64-Bit Chip · · Score: 1

With Intel, you are basically buying a name. I've found AMD processors to be more reliable. With backwards compatibility, this will make powerful 64 bit apprications available to the general public, and the server industry will have a boom. AMD has finally surpassed Intel.

This way, the drive could be perpetually monitored, kind of like the TVs in "1984" that send and receive at the same time. Having one of the heads break would render the drive inoperable in at least 1 way, like a blind person walks around. Or, if the write head is broken, a paralyzed person. I just don't think they're reliable, and that's why servers have redundant drives. -- Move 'zig' --

  21. Necessary? on When Spun Really Fast, CDs Explode · · Score: 1

This is my first post on /. I have a 56x CD-ROM drive in my computer. That computes to an approximate value of 9.856 Mbps, and as such, 650MB would take 1 min 5 sec. IMHO, that is really not bad, although I do prefer my 10/100 Ethernet. I have noticed that it makes a loud whirring noise, and a scraping noise when it spins down. The CDs also come out VERY hot. I have never left a CD in there for long. If 52x can destroy a CD, I just hope the computer's casing can stop any fragments. I guess this puts a whole new "spin" on "fragging"! :)
