I think you should try different media. My box here reads every type of DVD, be it +R, -R and their RW counterparts.
Granted, the different DVD drives used in the various XBOX revisions can be a bit picky with CD-RW media (let alone CD-R), but I haven't come across a box which wouldn't read somewhat good DVD media.
What's your point? the problem with microsoft is that you can't replace, for instance, Internet Explorer. I don't mean just using an different Browser, but really replacing (deleting/uninstalling) it. Also, you can't really get rid of Windows Media Player etc.
That's the problem, I think it's ok to improve your product, it is however a problem when you are forced to use some program, having no choice no matter what you try.
Dictionnaire Infernal - Collin de Plancy (1863)
- paraphrased
As duke and high marquis of hell, Scox/Chax commands 30 legions. He appears as a stork with a raucous voice, and is known to be deceitful. He steals horses, and takes the silver in the houses he possesses only to return it 1200 years later if everything is still in order. If he is confined to a triangle, he will speak truth on supernatural matters, point out hidden treasures not guarded by evil spirits, and obey the exorcist. If he is not confined, he will lie and not always obey the exorcist.
I don't know about you, but if all websites should look like useit.com, I'll stop working on websites instantly.
The useit.com is by far the crappiest site I know, the colors are, apart from being plain ugly(the yellow bar on top and he light blue!) and very badly chosen, pretty distracting.
The layout of the pages is awful and very hard to read since there is no real structure or thelike. The font is far too big so reading becomes eventually a PITA (agreed, too small is also a PITA!). He could have at least used a <blockquote> or so, just to make sure what belongs where! I could go on and on. So we have here a so-called usability guru, who can't do better than the folks he criticizes, so judge for yourself please.
In Austria this is not entirely true. "Bio Diesel" (which was in fact created here) is very popular for agricutlutral vehicles, such as harvesting machines and tractors. Many farmers do nothing but grow crops for the bio diesel production. A Friend of mine runs his car off salad oil which works just as good. You have to add some "normal" Diesel though in either case. Your engine greses a bit faster with these. And not every engine is able to run properly on Bio-Diesel (so some say)
By the way, when a car powered by bio diesel passes by, the fumes smell like french fries. I mean how cool is that!
ease of use.
I can't really say if either an Apple or a x86 based laptop will be better in therms of ease of use. Many people swear by Apple, on the other hand, you might get a better bang for the buck when buying an x86. I'd say it's probably just being used to something. I've been working for years with Windows, now i'm hooked on Linux and Gnome. I've never had my hands on an Apple PC so can't say.
connectivity
I'd say the only thing you need is to find some sort of either an travel adapter or some replacement power brick for Japan, which shoulnd't be that hard to get. Ethernet and stuff is the same all over the globe, so connectivity is nothing I'd be worried about. Problems could arise when using an analog modem, since these can be quite a pain in the butt sometimes. But you can get some adaptors for the differnet plugs, so again, no problem.
So as you can see, it's just a matter of getting the best bang for the buck, everything else is pretty much a no-brainer, just a matter of getting some adapters and/or power brick. Just ask your hardware dealer to help you out.
since when is slashdot the place to do reviews of consumer electronics, especially comparing two totally different devices!? Digital camera vs. portable game gadget! sorry, I don't see a connection here.
The "dreambox" is nothing more than a polished version of the d-box, a machine build from Nokia, Sagem and Philips for the European, especially german speaking market. A Company called Kirch Media sold these boxes in order to give access to "Premiere", a digital, excrypted set of some 30 or so channels some of which are pay-per-view.
Kirch is now bankrupt, since pretty much everybody and their friends watched/watches this "Premiere" for free since the Irdeto encryption wasn't really hard to break.
The d-box was build around a 66Mhz PPC with 32MB of RAM and 8MB of Flash. It features prtty much everything the dreambox has to offer minus the IDE channel. For this machine, an open source firmware was written by some enthusiasts since the original firmware was Java based and took up to 30 sec. to switch channels - not real acceptable is it. Streaming and therefore the PVR function can be achieved via the 10Mbit LAN connection on the machine itself and some nice software tricks.
You can get further infos (mostly in german) using google searching for "linux@dbox2"
or do these screens look like some sort of Gnome/KDE/X rip off? Let's see, we have here multiple desktops, panels and some kind of ugly theme...
yeah! really new, revolutionary as always.
I've spend the last few years developing web apps and I have to say that I have never ever needed most of the features a commercial db would offer me.
(I've never really needed transaction support, i've never needed subselects.) On the other hand, I have not seen anything as fast or as simple as MySQL.
Sure, MySQL is not my first choice when it comes to bigger style apps which would rely heavily on the database (that's what postgres' for:-) but as far as serving websites is concerned: it's MySQL all the way!
If I were IBM and had to sell some DB2 licences, I too would say everything else is rubbish, same for Microsoft, that's called marketing I was told...

Ok, it're REALLY Off-topic, but I've come across a very peculiar detail about SCOs trade name "SCOX"
