Oh wait... you can't, because of leap seconds.

Because your employer purchased the machine for one and only one reason -- to make them money. They didn't buy it so you could fuck around with it like it was your damned toy.

As far as your boss is concerned, there's no difference between you "trying" to install firebox on your work machine, and the counter person at McDonalds "trying" to install firefox on the cash register.

Someday, you might work in a development or IT job, where your boss feels inclined to trust your judgement, and understands that the increased support costs to keep you running on a non-standard configuration are (probably) outweighed by your increased productivity. But you're not there now.

If you want to dick around with different software for fun, do it at home.

Is there a MUD that currently works, so I can try it out, and see how they've "solved" these problems?

Every Hard drive has a unique IP address. An IP address is used by the internet so the governmnet can keep track of you. That way if someone is doing something illegal, such as hacking, the government or police can identify this person by their IP address, simmilar to a cars liscence plate.

Some hackers however, have found ways to steal peoples IP address by using special virusses called trojan horses. Once the hacker has stolen someones IP address, they can use it while hacking to avoid being caught.

stealing IP addresses is illegal and I will not be explaining how to do it here.

Right now, computers are much more like the railroads were a hundred and fifty years ago -- a mess of different, incompatible standards that don't work together, and are an impediment to wider adoption.
