The company I work for does both SSL and VPN connections for corporate networks. I used Starbucks just as an example but we have clients that are similar in size and operation. It's easier to buy some cheap circuit from us or even provide your own, of virtually any type even dial up and VPN to the corporate network or credit processor than to set up and figure out your own network and related headache. Worst case if our dial backups fail they can usually spool the credit cards until a connection is made again. I think giants like Wal-Mart do dedicated networks but it isn't as feasible for a smaller franchisee.

Thank you for the info on the optical splitters the NSA installed, I figured people would create a huge uproar over it, but I've thought that about a lot of things the past few years. Apparently they wanted to put a couple boxes on our network to do probably the same thing but we didn't go for it.

Not just telecommuting but also the tens of thousands of POS systems that are running over VPN's. When all of a sudden Starbucks or someone like that sees 10K sites stop processing credit cards transactions for a day or two they are going to scream bloody murder.

I do support on DSL circuits and cable for literally thousands of businesses with vendors all over the board and IMHO DSL is by far less reliable than cable. In addition DSL repairs can take days when most cable companies get someone out same day or next, at least with business services. Ever had to schedule a vendor meet with the DSL provider and the ILEC? You never have those types of issues with cable.

I'd have to say you are right on the money (no pun intended) with that one. I actually just bought 2 CD's for the first time since the pre-Napster era and both were $9.99 which I didn't feel ripped off about. The funny thing was that I mostly did it to feel like I used to when I'd go to Tower Records, buy a CD and plop it in the CD player of my car before driving out. It brought back some memories I'll tell you that.

As far as vigilante justice goes, I think this is more like when you shake a friends hand then say "Wow your hand smells like gasoline" and then when he smells his hand you smack it into his nose. The guy getting the tattoo didn't get hurt but I would bet he remembers his dipshit action. I'm not for vigilante justice or anything of that sort but come on this is funny. He's lucky he didn't try to scam some guy who would go to Nigeria and take his own retribution.
