I can understand having the QA machines affecting the data on the iPod, yet I fail to see how inventory management and asset tracking software could affect the data that goes onto the iPod. The problem here, is not that windows was being used, but that so little care was taken with what gets run on something in a production environment. This isn't the first report this week. Remember McDonald's Japan and the Infected USB sticks? All I'm saying is that if you have to have computers on the production line, ensure that they are properly secured. Don't run them in administrator mode, don't check your email or browse the internet on them, and ensure that nothing is being put on the hard drives that shouldn't be there.

Windows can be pretty secure when you take the proper precautions. When you're running it in a production environment, producing media that will be put into the computers of others, then you have to make sure you take the proper precautions. The proper precautions here doesn't even need to be install antivirus. What it needs to be, is don't have the machines hooked up to the internet, and don't hook them up unguarded to the company intranet. Don't turn autorun on, and don't have employees checking their email from this machine. Do not allow physical access to these machines by just anyone, and lock them down as much as possible. I'm sorry but no OS would be safe when result of infection is something so high profile.

But you can't generate cutscenes and CD quality audio with procedural techniques. This is why they are filling up the 25 GB. Although some of that 25 GB is due to larger textures, I would say that the majority of the space is being taken up by hi-res cutscenes and music. Look at Zelda, Ocarina of time. That game fit in 25 MB. The world was huge, and the game was great, but there were no cutscenes, and you had to read the text, not have it read to you. I'm not sure a lot of publishers are interested in creating games like this.

I'm not saying they should start splicing in pig/ostrich/whatever genes into the cows, because that's a little outside the abilities of selected breeding. However I have no problem with them using cloning to provide a good consistent product.

That's my biggest fear as far as the PS3 is concerned. Nintendo opted out of optical media on the N64 because at that point optical media wasn't ready, and they didn't want their customers to have 2 minute loading times on games. With the GC, loading times were really good on most titles, and almost non-existent most of the games I've tried. However, whenever i've played PS2, I get really frustrated at the load times. I'm not sure how much faster Blu-Ray is than DVD in read speeds, but I've head that the PS3 load times are more than PS2, and that's not something I want out of a gaming system.

There are only so many standard operating modes. With a computer, the power consumption varies a lot with usage.
