  2. Her's some trivia on Peter Jackson remaking King Kong · · Score: 0

I know the guy who played Kong in the monkey suit in the 70's version (father of one of my mates). He told me when he busted down the "gates" and fell into the gaseous pit, he fell incorrectly, or certainly different to what the director had asked for. So he half rose out of the pit and thumped his arm against the ground. The director liked this shot better and it stayed for the film.

  5. Sounds like a nightmare to implement on CA Considers Taxing Solar Power Generation · · Score: 0

The article has been /.'ed. Does this relate to solar-powered hot water systems? Would that then mean the government will keep track of who owns such a system, or you would need to be declare them on a tax form? What about if there were proportionally less sunny days in a particular year - could you seek a lower tax levy to that of previous years? Wouldn't the manufacturers of these solar-powered systems also be up in arms as such a tax would disincentivize customers to buy their products?

  6. Not forgetting the recent lawsuit on Humankind Makes Last Stand Against Machine · · Score: 0

The FT mentions this and it has appeared elsewhere: "Another factor against Kasparov is that his preparation has been interrupted by legal problems. The First International Bank of Israel is suing Mr Kasparov for damages after Kasparov Chess Online Inc, Mr Kasparov's troubled company, failed to repay a $1.5m loan. The unresolved dispute is said to have taken almost two weeks out of the chess player's training schedule." And Deep Junior is what, an Israeli-designed programme. Even Kasparov thought that this lawsuit wasn't just a coincidence.

  7. Re:It's much more reliable in Asia on SMS Messaging Unreliable · · Score: 0

Here in Hong Kong I have on a number of occasions received delayed SMSs, up to a couple of hours. Did I ever not receive a message? For the most part, how would you know? By the way, SMS is relatively expensive (certainly compared to local voice calls) unless you subscribe to some monthly plan offering 50/100 etc messages a month for a flat fee. Otherwise it will set you back HKD2.00/message or US$0.26.

  8. Thrust Air 2000 on Tallest Roller Coaster in the World · · Score: 0

I thought this roller coaster accelerated even faster - something like 80-100mph in around 2 seconds. I reckon the greater thrill is in the acceleration not the elevation.

My understanding before the Trinity test in Los Alamos was that there were indeed general concerns that an atomic bomb explosion would in turn set off another chain reaction and take out the whole planet. However all these smart dudes (Fermi, Op et al) did their sums and rightly concluded it wouldn't occur.

  10. Will the powers that be dub this one? on New Mad Max Film · · Score: 0

I remember catching a repeat viewing of Mad Max II (or the Road Warrior for much of the overseas market) in the US, and they dubbed the entire cast, even Max. I guess they would have used subtitles, but you know, that places too much effort on the viewer. ;) By the way, Beyond Thunderdome sucked the pus and lacked the meatier rustic edge of the first two. I guess Miller caved into Hollywood and glossed it over. Tina Turner scrubbed up quite well though.

  11. Continuing the hydrogen is highly flammable debate on Fuel Cell Powered Backup System · · Score: 0

Somewhat offtopic, however there was a paper by UCLA or NASA that discussed the Hindenburg disaster and whether hydrogen was the main culprit (which was no, it was more the fabric according to them). Anyway, one of the professors said that hydrogen was no more hazardous than gasoline, perhaps less so. Gasoline's heavier than air vapours are a big factor. They also said hydrogen, obviously handled properly, was safer than propane and about as risky as natural gas.

  12. Re:Is that conversion correct? on 239 MPG Car · · Score: 0

Forget it. I just read the article and the author simply grabbed the "It is a '1-liter' car, that is to say covers 100 kilometres (approximately 239 mpg)" segment and couldn't be arsed computating 0.89l.

My girlfriend (natural blond, not a jumbo i.e. has a black box), manicures her mons pubis so that it has a quiff of blond hair (somewhat scraggly). I call it the "Tin Tin". 21. Re:Not carrying a phone makes me the odd man out on NYC Law Aims To Ban Cell Phones In Theatres · · Score: 1

As I'm currently living overseas, contact with family and friends is obviously not as consistent when living back in your home town, and you find yourself not fully in the loop. My international incoming calls invariably do not register a caller ID, for whatever reason, but it's apparent the call is not local. Of course I won't hesitate to answer these calls at any time (excluding cinemas, theatre ...) - who wouldn't, assuming you give a crap about your old mates and kin. Also, for my two shekels worth, I have my phone on vibration mode at all times.

  22. Re:some selected answers: on Tech-Interview Riddles · · Score: 1

I believe your answer to the calendar cube puzzle is close but incorrect as, given the instructions, you would not be able to show either the seventh and eighth of the month given the lack of the second "0". However if your first block had the numbers 0-5 instead, it will work as the nine on the second block can always be turned upside down to give a six.
