    maybe mac users have been spoiled all these years...i'm not sure how big a diffference there is between platform versions, but QT is soooooo much better quality video than windoze media...i dumped RP years ago, with no intention of going back...can someone out there tell us what the difference in quality between the two platforms is?

    ...another fine example of patent BS--Douglas Englebart first described hyperlinks in his seminal work in the 1960s...makes you wonder how hard they really look for prior art--i found a link to confirm my facts about DE on google in about 2 seconds...

    this is just great, I guess the War on Drugs and the War on Terrorism have been so successful that the RIAA has to get in on the act...

    if the 'War on Drugs' is any indication, look for 'zero tolerance,' and heavyhanded application of the RICO act...

    so, could an 'alleged' pirate have their computer equipment confiscated for having a couple of illegal songs? how about their house? don't think it to be out of the realm of possibility, given that our civil liberties are a skeleton of what they were just a few short years ago, and that RICO has been wielded indiscriminately, to put it kindly...

    ps. say 'hi' to the nice FBI man who is 'monitoring' this post...

    there's a documentary on cable recently called 'rumrunners' which is a history of moonshining, and a very interesting history lesson--basically, it's all about taxes, so the govt is mostly interested in cracking down as a way to insure that the money from legal booze keeps filling their coffers...

    btw, it started early, before independence even--it wasn't a crime until the govt realized how much money they could make on it...the funniest story involved a bunch of scotch in pennsylvania who used their homebrew liquor as currency...they couldn't pay the govt $$ because they didn't have any! (here officer, have this gallon jug as payment)

    sorry, i'm still not buying it...you are speaking in theoretical terms, while i'm talking from direct exposure to both carpenters and architects...and yes, i would consider hiring a carpenter to do an architects job. (i've seen many carpenters who were equal or better designers than many architects...)

    continuing your analogy, would you be happy if all of the carpenters in our society were outsourced? we'd still have the 'big picture' architects, but the guys who do the real work would be elsewhere, leaving a knowledge gap between theory and reality...

    i don't think we're really that far apart--obviously, you've come up through the ranks, and had a good amount of real world programming experience to augment your schooling--the question you should be asking is, where is the next generation of up-and-comers going to get this experience, if all the 'hammer and nails' work is being done elsewhere?

    while you make some good points, you lose them at the end with your ill-informed analogy...

    if you'd ever spent any time around the building trades, you'd understand that many of these lowly 'tradesmen' carpenters actually know more about building than the architects--a large percentage of architects have only theoretical knowledge, and often design incomplete buildings with substandard, or even defective designs (of course, the building looks good in the CAD fly-through)--carpenters often have to apply some serious 'real world' problem-solving to fix some architect's fancy plan...

    i doubt it will change your mind, but your flawed analogy makes ME look at outsourcing as more than just the loss of a few insignificant 'tradesmen'...

    circa 1998, M$ launched their first 'flash killer,' but it was so successful that i can't even remember what it's name was...

    i see a lot of wishful thinking out there, but Flash ain't going anywhere soon...SVG=BFD (vector graphics barely makes the Top 50 cool/useful things that FlashMX can do)

    with the possible exception of their 'wonderful' visual programming tools, can anybody name a successful pro-level design tool that M$ has developed? i came from the print world, where there used to be speculaton about M$ and their new 'Adobe killers' --funny, you don't hear that one anymore...;>

    the lesson of the boom-boom 90s should be clear by now...the money making goes to the 'hype and bulls#t' crowd, the ones who can stroke the big egos and pump sunshine up their asses...

    does anybody believe that whatever Darl McBride makes is justified? did he actually write any of the unix code in question? his value is in how much b.s. he can pump to grease the system in his company's favor (insert your favorite ceo's name here)

    afa these job postings go, the insane technical and experience requirements are a Trojan Horse, designed to get said applicant hired for less money (oh, you don't have 10+ years programming C apps for nuclear powerplants? well, you're going to be on the low end of the pay scale writing VB scripts for our dogfood distribution website)

    the solutions aren't easy--either be happy with less, or start your own business--i did both after living through the dotcom meltdown--try drinking Cafe Bustelo instead of Starbucks 3x a day, and hopefully you'll realize you don't need as much $ as you though you did...;>

    back in '97 or so, they released some stillborn animation software that quicky went nowhere, until it was finally put out of it's misery...(can't even remember the name)

    as for an SVG API, all i can say is 'good luck suckers' --SVG was never meant to be a full-fledged animation platform...

    bah! i say, let them bring it on, and let it join the pile of skeletons piling up in MS' closet...

    now that iTunes and the iPod are available for wintel, maybe some of the windoze dittoheads will realize there IS a difference in how Apple products work--how many times in the past have we all heard, 'bbbbbut, we also have a music player app (media player app, video editing app, etc) that does the same thing...does it really?;>

    sorry you have to pay taxes, but that's part of the deal here (or it used to be) --why don't you hire one of those ex-enron accountants and go offshore?

    in a few years, we will really see the efffects of corporate welfare, and the republicans fight against ANY taxes...when all of the social programs are gone and the underclass finally says 'enough', there will be massive instability in our country--of course, the top of the pyramid will be hiding out in their gated communities...

    when i hear tax rants like this, i wonder where the source is...where do you live? do you think it's an anomaly that NY and CA provide the bulk of the country's GNP, and also that they are both Democratic states? being a new yorker, i will tell you it's because every day here, you're forced to interact with people from all nations and socioeconomic levels, and you realize that society needs a contribution from everybody in order to work...

    it's easy to rant about welfare mothers and illegal immigrants, but the reality is, that social programs from the government provide essential resources to help people move out of the vicious cycle of poverty and violence--which is something that the current govt policies are doing their best to kill--don't kid yourself, your taxes are an insurance policy against destabilization of the fabric of our country...

    and if you're really worried about your tax dollars, why don't you ask the Pentagon to account for the billions of dollars that they 'lose' each month?

    i'm glad you brought this up--i just finished reading 'Under The Banner of Heaven,' the recent book by Jon Krakauer, and it's an excellent and well-researched account of the less savory history of Mormonism and its fundamentalist spinoffs (i'm also familiar with the Mormons since i have relatives in SLC, Utah)...read this book and you'll have a different opinion of the Mormons...the most salient tidbits are: They often have 'visions' where God 'forgives' them of paying their taxes, business debts, house payments, etc... they also have a neat thing called 'Lying for the Lord' where it is considered morally fine to lie to non-mormons...(not to mention poygamy and child brides...)

    obviously, as in any religion, the majority of Mormons are good, law abiding folk, however, as a group, they have a historical reputation of being anywhere from less than honest to downright brutal to anybody they consider 'inferior' (read: non-Mormon)

    don't let the haircut and tie fool ya!
