"Nope. The supreme court now splits nicely down party lines for every vote." Firstly the supreme court is a-political but if you must know seven of the nine judges on the court now were apointed by Republicans. Sandra O'Conner was appointed by Regan and I doubt youd would have considered her a political hack for the right. "I wonder how many 5-4 votes have gone through in the last six months, with votes falling the same way every time." Probably about the same percentage as any other year you only hear about the 5-4's because, well, usually those are the news worthy cases. http://docket.medill.northwestern.edu/archives/003 771.php Shows most decisions in 2006/07 were either unaninous or extremely one sided but its not news worthy unless about 40% of the population disagrees with it. "Americans: I feel sorry for you." Dont, despite what you might think many of us are not hopelessly despondent and unhappy with our nation. Sure we have a very unpopular president but hell be out of office in a bit over a 18 months (if not sooner). Nothing is as tacky as someone from another nation saying who they 'feel sorry' for someone else because the culture there is different and the government reflects that. I Dont feel sorry for some European nations (Im not even going to name them) despite the fact people die waiting to see a doctor there its their health care system and for whatever reason they like what they got.

The autism they are dealing with is from hanging 'x' syndrome all you need to do is find a female who is trait positive (has on malformed x) and breed her. 50% of her male offspring will have the condition. You can, through trial and error, get a female with the condition by then using that male and a trait positive female (but not the mother thats icky). All of *that* females male offspring will have the condition. This is not an autism cure it is a cure for a 'type' of autism.

Its a grant ploy, similar to the sales ploy used by guardisil (sp) which does not prevent all of the HPV nor all the subset of HPV that causes cervical cancer but if we say this stops cancer we can get states ot mandate it for grade school girls. Both things are good (mitigating the effects of hanging x and preventing hpv) but neither is the solution as advertised..

Class divisions in the United States have more to do with social networks (the real ones, not FB/MS), social capital, cultural capital, and attitudes than income." -- There is something to this where people decide to put their income and in what circles they run effect greatly their perceived class. This is not just a matter of being frugal but a matter of using money as a tool and the difference between how you use that tool. I have friends who make 50K who own a boat, two cars, a motorcycle, and their home. They are also constantly in trouble with their debt. If one did not know them and looked at them they would see upper middle class family. even though they are on the cusp of losing everything. I have another set of friends who make less than 20K who rent an appt but have been steadily building assets and paying off student debt, one looking from the outside would see them as being impoverished but in reality they are living sustainability have a ton of time together and live a very rich life (though no boat). When a scientist, especially a social scientist, trys to say this is what class is they are going to be wrong (just as I would be wrong) because being a mamber of a class can relate to any aspect of our being. I am a white male (that puts me in a class), I make $Salary that puts me in a class, I own a home, I am in a mixed race relationship, I have two kids, I take the bus to work, I'm 30, ...
