    accepting jury duty 99 times out of 100 will mean sitting in a trial about some punk who held up a liquor store, or some domestic dispute, or some DUI case......how exactly would this involuntary servitude have any bearing on affirming or defending our rights?

    real existing ion engines have thrust appropriate for a small payload over years, a kilometer wide ball of goop is going to need something hugem and detecting a collision fifty or hundred years before it happens isn't possible right now

    is that a truly free country does NOT assume its citizens are criminals, the people are "innocent until proven guilty!" A free and innocent person, not convicted of anything to prevent the acquisition of a passport, should thus be treated with courtesies and safe passage. A government that assumes otherwise of its citizens, as Britain does, is evil.

    people by and large have been writing, spreadsheeting, and making tedious powerpoint presentations with older versions of office just fine and dandy. Since 99.5% of what needs to be done can be done without spending more money, why bother to upgrade?

    whah? do you know what percentage of people in a first world country think you'd have to buy a dish reflector to have something act as dish reflector? near 100%, I'll betcha. we need more stories like this, and more people to realize alternatives to spending huge wads of cash just might be possible for a project.

    yes, but you may not use it as a bowl. only a satellite dish can be used for that, or something shaped like one in a pinch.

    I'm back at windows 2000 pro sp 4 to run tax software and and some win-peripherals, and that runs inside vmware under Kubuntu. but I'm thinking of going to XP sp 2 to do some other windows-only things. someday I won't need windows at all (MacOSX might be a possibility), but that day isn't today

    The only thing windows 2000 is being used for is to run consoles. Just a bloated terminal with a gui. The actual CMS and PAAMS systems don't run Windows. Windows can't run a weapons system or control a ship or radar or missile, interrupt driven non-realtime OS aren't the tool for the job.
