    Operation Hollywood (2004)

"Operation Hollywood: How the Pentagon Shapes and Censors the Movies" draws an unsettling analysis of the military's influence on the film industry.

This program examines how the development of the motion picture industry in Hollywood coincided with the US's entry onto the world stage, on both political and military levels. Hollywood and the Pentagon...most people are intrigued to learn than a relationship exists between these two pillars of American power. Yet the US armed forces foresaw of the benefits in supporting the production of war and combat films when the country's cinema was still in its infancy. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the early days of cinema, the US was still a young, relatively isolated country. Two world wars later the country could no longer afford to remain insular. The story of how America faced up to the world was told by war movies.

I still remember my first MP3 and the first time I used winamp. My jaw dropped to the ground. THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE EVERYTHING!!! I thought. This was back before Napster. Back when we had to get mp3s from ftp sites and we had to scroll long ass lists of directories to find the song we wanted. There were no p2p applications with fancy search engines. Anyone here remember Blex's page of good mp3?

When I heard aol bought nullsoft I was a little disappointed because I thought Frankel was a sellout and winamp would become bloated and lame. Frankel stayed cool as hell and winamp didn't become lame. Gnutella was the first decentralised file sharing/search network and it scared the shit out of corporations like aol. And he released it after he supposedly sold out. It was opensource. So Justin is still cool in my book. Who cares if he's rich? Shawn Fanning might be a moviestar now (Italian Job) but Frankel is the real revolutionary hacker.

Important to note that they will still make and sell film, even though they wont be selling film-based cameras. Film is not going anywhere. Kodak wasn't really one of the major producers of film based cameras anyway-- Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Pentax, Olympus, Pentax, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Contax, Konica, Leica, Fuji, Bronica all still make film cameras and are doing very well with them.

Most professionals still prefer film over digital. I myself wouldn't dream of not taking my SLR with me to do a wedding. I pack my digital too, but I will never leave my film at home, even 20 years from now. Maybe I'm just old fashioned?

Besides, darkroom skills impress girls much more than photoshop skills. No joke. Girls really are impressed when you show them your darkroom.

but the cartridge format meant more expensive games. if they manufacture 100,000 cartridges of a game and only sell 50,000 thats a huge loss. but if they make 100,000 cds of a game and only sell 50,000 then they don't lose as much money because cds dont cost nearly as much as cartridges. this made game publishers wary of making n64 games. and hurt nintendo in the long run.

First let me say that the GameCube is a great machine. However nintendo keeps screwing up and thats why it has lost its lead. It started when they chose to censor Mortal Kombat and Sega didn't. This alienated many of their mature gamers. Then they chose the cartridge format for N64. Then they chose to not support/encourage third party developers as much as sony/sega/microsoft. Also they decided to only make cute little games oriented towards kids, even though most gamers are adults. All the games for older gamers are third party games. Look at their first party games... Mario, Monkey Ball, F-Zero, Mario Party, Kirby, Zelda, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Smash Brothers... The only FIRST PARTY game doesn't have cute little cartoon characters is Metroid. While I respect that nintendo has kept their games clean instead of selling out and making violent sexually explicit adult only games like GTA3 it has cost them some gamers. It's not just about sex and violence either. Games like Gran Turismo are made for older gamers that can appreciate the realism of the game. Kids under 13 don't care that they recorded actual engine sounds from each auto model. I mean adults can play Mario or Zelda The original GBA display also sucked. This was fixed with GBA SP but it was too late. And don't even get me started on how they've failed at online gaming compared to sony and microsoft. Hopefully they'll get their act together for their next system. Make it backward compatible with gamecube games, make it play DVDs, put a network adapter in there (wireless even), put a hard drive in there, have lots of good launch titles (first party AND THIRT PARTY), and don't flood the market with nothing but mario games. (mario golf, mario party, mario tennis, mario fighting game, mario world, mario racing...)
