First, he calls these services ineffective because they only fill a few percent of the jobs nationwide. But that percentage jumped from 2.5% 2 years ago to 5% last year (total, for all job boards.) Given that rate, it'll be at 40% in a few years.

No. It won't. A 50% increase from one datapoint to another does not indicate a definate unchanging trend. By the same logic, it would be 140% after a few more years.

If you want to measure job boards effectiveness, I'd use number of applications submittied vs number of jobs filled. Then compare that with traditional methods. Personally, I had zero response from job board applications, despite being perfectly qualified for many roles. Direct applications to ads got more interest. However, networking won hands down. Got an interview and offer from each one.

So, the job boards appear to be the lowest of the low from the point of view of the job-hunter. Waste of time if you ask me...about all they are good for is seeing what's out there. Most other posters in this thread seem to agree.

Oh yeah, I did the whole custom cover letter for each one, my CV is pretty good and cross-checked by several people. I'm even pretty good and up-to-speed on the mechanics of job interviewing (got a good book on the subject), so it wasn't user error on the boards from me.

One of the sites here in the UK only lists each post for 7 days, after which the employer has to resubmit it. As new.

Needless to say, I only looked at that site for about 10 days then moved on. The other sites had the exact same listings anyway, without faking "new post" status.

I've gotta agree. I've been looking for something new here in the UK and I've found similar experiences.

What irked me the most was the repetition of the jobs accross the sites. You'd see the same job with a different description on multiple places. This is a serious problem if you apply for both, as the different agencies will fight over the fees. Often in this scenario, both agencies and the employer will simply walk away from you as it's not worth the hassle.

When phoning them, they absolutely will not tell you the name of the company. Which is a huge factor in deciding if the role interests you or not! In the end I had a routine where I'd reel of a whole list of companies as my first question to avoid wasting time.

And the result from all this? Well, only got a few interviews, each of them from people I knew in the industry, already working in companies. Nothing from the agencies at all. And it's not as though I'm a muppet; I've got a good CV and was offered every job I interviewed for.

Like you, I believe that a lot of jobs on the sites are fakes. There were several that were a perfect match for my skill set that by all rights I should have at least had an interview for. Either the agencies are completely inept, or they are making it up. I suspect a bit of both.

Perhaps a new saying: Those who can, do. Those who can't, work for job agencies.

If you use two systems at the same desk, there are some good tricks you can do. On an X-windows box, run an app called x2vnc. Then, on your second machine (e.g. windows) run a vncserver. When the mouse hits the end of the screen, it warps over to the other PC. So, you get to use two different PCs as a multiple display setup, using the same inputs. Cut and paste works as well! Highly recommended. I used to do it with a dual head PC to get three displays hooked in.

If you want both machines running X, you need to use x2x, as vncserver on *nix creates a virtual display.

Which just goes to show you know absolutely nothing of "real DJ's".

No, just you know nothing of me, so don't make an assumption. It depends how you define a DJ. On one end of the spectrum, there's your "Dave's Disco" guy, for hire anytime any place. Sure, they love mp3.

On the other extreme end, there's the performance DJ, where the mixing of the music creates something new. This goes beyond playing two tracks at work. You need to see someone like Q-Bert or Mixmaster Mike cutting up vinyl to appreciate it. It's like certain sports (e.g. golf) where you have to have experience of it to appreciate the masters. The DMC championships make for some cool viewing if you can get a hold of the videos.

You just can't do that electronically yet. Final Scratch and any other similar device will never give the instant audible feedback that a needle on a record can give. The sound buffers etc all add milliseconds to the response. The drive sensor does the same. The same issues are a problem in putting together a digital studio. Add in midi delay, and you get to see some artificts of digital media. It's good, but it's not perfect. Give it a few years tho and who knows

I think one of the next things will be people doing electronic mashes live. It would work like a normal DJ set, but instead of dropping in tracks, you drop in loops. With the right software, you could put off some good tricks and react instantly to the crowd. Should be good!!

  8. Re:Kinda mediocre on Backlash as EMI Hunts Down the Grey Album · · Score: 5, Informative
I've been a fan of bootleg mash-ups for many years (1999 according to some file datestamps), and I agree. This isn't all that great as an album, I was quite disappointed given the hype.

What is interesting however is the reaction to it. I've been anticipating this for a while now; ever since "2 Many DJs" became popular, bootleg remixes have pretty much entered mainstream music. Here in the UK there are radio stations who promote it, and MTV even has a show now called MTV Mash. Note that the latter has to limit itself to licensed tracks, kinda ignoring the "dirty, unauthorised" appeal of some mashes.

When 2 Many DJs released their album "As Heard on Radio Soulwax Part 2", they had to cut out half of the tracks due to license restrictions. Since then, parts 1-8 of the series have appeared on-line, without restriction. The style is really an extension to hip-hop turntablism, but created entirely digitally. Tools like Acid allow you to pull loops from songs, reorder them, remix them and resequence them into something entirely different. Mainstream music has been doing this for years, a listen to the "Sampled" album collection shows some interesting sampling loops done years ago in well-known tracks you'd never think were based around a few samples. You could actually do this years ago on machines like the Atari ST, but the software now is incredible.

Tech is also entering the turntable world. "Final Scratch" puts PCM encoded vinyl onto standard decks, allowing a Linux PC to play mp3 as if it were on the disk. Entire electronic systems are available with scratch pads. However, you will never get the respect of a real DJ, they don't go for blinking lights!!

There are loads of websites with new mixes appearing daily from all over the world. Some of them are incredible, others are accapallela rap lyrics over something else. Like this album. Yawn, might have been interesting about three years ago...bootleggers, mixing rap over another song isn't big or clever. Mix two songs with similar chord-sequences and clever name/band connections, then I'll be impressed. :-)

If this sort of thing appeals to you, check out the following names: Freelance Hellraiser, 2ManyDJs, Eclectic Method, Osymyso, etc. See you on p2p!!

    - Most CD/DVD techs have an upper limit file size of 2gig. This is why DVDs use VOB (I think).

I doubt that any director who shoots matted film does it with the intention to make the TV version superiour. It's just to make it better using a limited medium; the areas matted in the cinema allows the TV version to be more complete. Think of a scene in 2.35:1 widescreen (the widest, mostly action flicks). Now, you have two cast talking on screen at either end, what do you do for the 4:3 version?:

    a) Cut back and forth between the actors

    b) Pan back and forth

    c) Use a crop to show both actors on screen.

Now, the first two suck. They are just not the same as the original version, and sometimes clumsily done. I can name many movies with obvious Pan & Scan artifacts (e.g. Ghostbusters media coverage montage scene, Austin Powers Vegas scene and so on). Pretty annoying.

On the other hand, using a matte allows the director to use footage from the top and bottom of the screen to flesh out the bars that would normally be in a 4:3 presentation of a 2.35:1 movie. Often this causes feck-ups, especially boom mike goofs. The IMDB goofs pages has many entries that only apply to certain aspect ratio versions.

Back to the point. Cinema is all about the big screen. That's where directors want their movies watched. Maybe because of the artistic merit, maybe for the per-person revenue. Whatever. The point is that the original theatrical version is the one to watch.

Not all movies are WS, some directors didn't take to it. Kubrik for example didn't use it, except maybe for "eyes wide shut" (never seen it, too much BS hype). Jeez, most of his films only had monoural sound.

By the way, in case anyone is wondering, I checked the press release. The SW DVDs in this thread will aparently be released in separate anamorphic WS (yippie) and 4:3 (if that takes your fancy).

I'll be going for the WS ones. I don't buy a painting to cut pieces out to fit an old frame I happen to have lying around. The same with film.
