I remember seeing a show on PBS, I think it was a Frontline. We take our recyclables and sell it to China. One town was littered with the stuff. The towns people melt the gold and other metals out in homade cauldrens and dump the rest in the local rivers.
Only 10% of all new companies last more than 10 years. Ask around and see how many older coders you know work for the same company they did 10 years ago.Your comment sounds like it came right out of a bean-counters text book. Your statement is true, but it is not valid for 90% of the market. Companies may try to justify thier hiring practices with statements like this, but the truth is, like others have mentioned, younger = cheaper.
After straying away from Apple for the last 5 years, I recently started purchasing macs again for my company to use in audio editing and mixing because of its leadership in software designed for it(Digidesign Protools).
From what I've been reading on the web, The current dual G4 towers suffer from a slow system buss. The previous generation (Quick silver) preform at the same level mhz to mhz to these machines upto Buss saturation even with sdram over the faster DDR. The current G4's are being starved by the system buss and are capable of handling much more throughput than the buss can deliver. Combine this with the fact, that both processors share the single buss, the problem is magnified. My question to Apple is,When are they going to design a good MB that delivers the throughput to the current line of g4's?
WooHoo! I think all slashdotters need to make a home movie. Then I won't have to read all the posts about how no one really needs this type of performance. There are desktop apps, (I use them everyday) in audio and video that need this type of horsepower. Thanks for sharing your newly found insights.
You sir are out of your mind. Almost 100 percent of all tv shows, music cds, etc.. are now made using desktops.Firewire is a godsend in a production envirement. Thank god I don't have to transport audio and video files using Jaz disks anymore.Files this size cannot be transported over the net fast enough. Dual processors can easily be maxxed out using modern audio mixing programs using software effects plugins and upwards of 64 tracks of audio playing back simultaniously at 24 bit 96khz.The desktop is used daily for such chores, and actually needs to be faster if we want to get completely away from having to spend 10s' of thousands on specialty hardware PCI cards. Just because you do not use a desktop in this manner does'nt make all this technology worthless. This is just one aspect where the desktop has changed the way an industry works. 10 years ago we couldnt even attempt what we do daily now with a minimum 100's of thousands of dollers in equipment.
I just purchased an Ibook 500 meg G3 on ebay. It has 576 meg of ram, the airport card, and it came with a boxed set cd's of mac 10.2 and
office X (499.list alone) for 710.00. It is a great little notebook. If you do your homework, you can get a great used mac at a reasonable price. For a couple hundred more I can buy a flat panel display full keyboard and an optical mouse. Firewire, usb, and gig ethernet are standard.
make it relatively simple to build a complex enterprise application, and by extension less expensive. I think mediocre coders (who will cost companies less) can build more robust apps in Java than other popular languages.
Mediocre coders writing complex enterprise applications. Thanks for making me LOL today!
Every post is ranked Funny! What is with slashdot today. A bunch of lame poststings.sUCH a this one and " Ex Employer". I feel like I'm reading the "ricky lake Show". This shit is dumb.
You sir are spewing a bunch of freakin crap. No one will remember you for either deed. You can be hosed by your EX employer or have some freakin dignity for the knowledge you have obtained.
Why is this news? Some juvenile posts asking what I would do if my old boss who canned me demanded I fix something?IN THE REAL WORLD THERE IS NO QUESTION TO ASK. Charge for your services.DuH! Give us a #$@^& break with this lame Post!!!
This could be a great archive medium. Speed is important in some applications, but if you set up your process to go from quick magnetic storage "tape" to optical later for permanence
It looks like great tech.
Hmmm.. I did'nt know I had a "right" to infringe on someone's copyright. Oh, I forgot this is Slashdot, where AC's make up rights to suit their argument.
And how is this so. You have the freedom to buy commercial music or not. You have the ability to use the internet to find alternatives. The commercial music industry is not hampering your ability to search the net for music you might like. It is not hampering Artists to post there music on the web for free or for sale. They are allowed to control the music the own, and that is their right. If an artist wants to sell their
stuff to man it is his-her decision to do so.get over it. It is not yours to distribute as you see fit.
You say you have "issues" but dont't tell us what they are.Either you have a suit or you dont't. Sign the papers and take your severence, sue them or shut up. I can't believe this got
on slashdot!!!! How can you have an intelligent discussion when you don't have any info?
The most I ever earned was 45,000k. Currently at 36,000 do to my previous employer going chapter 11 and scrambling for work. I own my own home in the city of Boston, and don't eat ramen noodles everyday.
The Sis 735 MB's offered good performance at a great price. Unfortunately to get stable performance you needed to buy a very expensive power supply that could supply enough juice. This negated any cost savings on performance these MB's offered.

Luckily, The Russian's space program can also retreive them. It was designed that way ,for suituations like this.

Come on now do we need to use a 400Mbit buss for a keyboard and mouse. No one can type and click that fast!
