The team is designing devices that can work out the level of attention a person is paying to their PC and the importance that each message received may have for them.
This could have implications for not only email but the entire way we use our computers. What if the operating system delivered appropiate messages about the status of the network based on the sysadmins attention and the piority of the message?
Web pages that could deliver shorter copy if the user is in a hurry/inattentive and longer copy if they are paying attention?
It seems to me one of the best ways to avoid the RIAA is to pretend you are part of the group they do not want to bring to court. They would be rather silly investigating the username of daisy_girl_10 in case it was a young girl, because of the bad publicity for themselves and the law itself. Besides there ae plenty of other "adult" sounding names to bother.
Would you rather have powerful telescopes pointed at Jupiter looking for more moons, or looking nearby for potential "dinosaur style" human-killing asteriods?
Firstly well argued. Some of your comments are spot on - while I did criticize I didn't offer a "solution" myself.
I would say however, that the article didn't offer us anything new. Slashdot is a (sorta) news service. Personally I want to read something that is either new to me or an "out of left field" controversial opinion that has the potential to shake things up a bit.
As you concede the article is a promotion, if one on an interesting topic from an interesting speaker. It is just not what I clasify as news.
Well said. Firstly he needs to work out exactly what he is testing with 3DMark and find something that is appropriate for his use of the computer. There will always be tweaks to push that extra bit, but if it is frame rates he is after then there is no escape from a GPU with some grunt.
I only hope it's not too hard to get this unit to Australia. I have been after a PVR for a while now after reading such glowing reviews on slashdot about them.
Unfortunately it appears that TEAC attempted to create an Australian model that was a dismal failure, and nobody else has had the ambition to have another go.
Perhaps making my own would be the best option. 80 Gigs isn't heaps, especially considering the much better quality television broadcast signals compared to the US, that needs to be compressed.
There will always be room for MS and any other company to do what they do - make software. I consider myself a fairly big open source fan and agree that it will make a major impact down the line, but it wont take over everything software related.

... and it is a major reason that the net is being used for news about the war. While no opinion will be impartial, a wide variety helps make an educated guess.
It wasn't long ago that I read laser rifles were only at the stage of being able to produce a slight warmth in the area around the dot.
Although they are looking at this for 20 years down the track, a _lot_ has to be improved to get to the point that this could be a weapon. Besides, any funding to a product that far away is purely speculative about its potential anyway.
I have been playing around with the development version prior to this, and it will definately be a big step-up from 1.3 when the final is released. The speed, look, and feel make the best browser even better.
Jones dismisses Microsoft's "trustworthy computing" initiative as "ridiculous" because it still allows programmers to write code that contains serious security vulnerabilities.
Considering the article is an April fools joke that quote is an understatement of fact.
I don't have enough time to learn yet another language. This isn't fair. Management is apparently already considering this as the "future of our progressive company".
Then again as long as it doesn't use pointers the uni students will be happy.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.
If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your Window in the trash, and your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!!
If the label on the cable on the table at your house says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!
When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM. Quick, turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!
This has both good novelty value and potential to freak people out, but what about the impact of a new UI for cars?
The hand-held steering wheel, foot controled accelorator / brake combination has clearly worked very sucessfully up to this day. Would a hand-held remote control for all three potentially make things easier for learners who have grown up with electronic equipment? People with disabilities?
In the (admitedly unlikely) situation of a driver having a heart attack / stroke while driving, a passenger could take over simply by grabbing the remote and stop the car safely. Just thinking aloud.
... I am arranging a group on SourceForge to bring "trusted computing" to linux!
One of our developers has already approached RMS but apparently he mumbled something about "GNU/trusted computing" before the developer hung up the phone.
This is a sad, sad, moment for the world. Going without UN approval effectively makes the UN worth nothing. To then expect the UN to clean up after us is further rubbing it in.

A lot of criticisms about how what everyone else is doing is wrong without offering an alternative, and gloating that "he did it first".
Nothing against Alan personally, but he reminds me of team motivators that are great at speaking theory but lack giving true direction.
