In the labor market, the problem is to match hiring managers with qualified workers. When you need something fixed, the problem is to match your dented fender or stopped-up toilet with the appropriate repair person.
These problems have already been solved in several formats. Think MP3. Someone wants a track, and they are connected with someone who has that track.
One format is websites. This is especially true for topics such as employment and dating where an "offerer" is connected with the "needer".
With my previous example of MP3s there the possibility of having a P2P referer network. Each person posts their "resume" of talents / interests, and then is refered through their friends lists to friends of friends searching for that interest. Six degrees of seperation stuff that is backed by the trust you have in your group of friends.
When I started this post it was just an unusual thought, but the more I think about it, the more logical this seems. I reserve all rights to this idea;)

"Where before, they feared Saddam Hussein, now they have to fear Sony Records will chop off their hands if they bootleg a Madonna album."
While the quote is both a funny and insightful comment, it is truely a sad situation that we live in a world where this could happen under any circumstances.
That said, with the freedoms we have we choose to go for a clearly biased party to create other countries laws.
Anything that means you can waste more time on slashdot when you need to do work cant be bad.
Nope, I wont be. The purple-white gradient with white text is rather painful on the eyes. After all the flak this site cops for the fugly, motherboard green layout of the main page this is not an improvement.
Nice concept, but badly executed in my opinion. Let's hope it gets touched up a fraction.
.. computer games are more effective learning tools because they sustain interest and attention in settings where people are normally bored.
I find it strange that every kid gets taught letters and numbers by using learning games, yet more advanced learning ignores this technique.
I know that there are games that teach you to program (topcoder.com is an example), but the potential in all areas of training isn't used. Maybe we will see a trend towards learning games in the future.
I hope this turns off a few of Telstra's clients. Despite being a majority government owned monopoly, people still sign up for their overpriced, under-performing network.
Have a quick look at whirlpool broadband news and the number of "telstra is down" stories and anti-telstra sentiment in the comments. Remind you of anywhere else;)
Maura Fay Casting are top notch casting recruiters. A relitive of mine went in fresh out of college and scored some minor roles very quickly. They worked with her as she built up to doing more major jobs.
Have a go. You might just pull a role that will set you up long term.
Yet more mobile devices that provide the hardware but can't see the posibilities of software features. Almost every current model mobile phone and gradually more PDAs are getting the combination of a camera and wireless / infrared connectivity. Why not spend a little extra time programming and create a webcam feature?
No extra hardware increases the value to the user without the cost of production. What's the hold up?
It seems to me that the amount of storage has now developed into overkill for music files. I would love to see companies incorporate colour screens that could provide the ability for video to be displayed since the storage is already there.
Of course with colour screen cell phones taking off the prices should drop to the point that this will be a natural progression in the next generation of players. I'm backing that may be a showpiece at the next macworld.
but isn't that exact same picture on the site on the left hand side? In fact it is even bigger. Are we all so trained to automatically skip the spaces on the page that we think might be adds at first glance?
Let's hope we're not about to enter an era of political correctness in video games. Personally I do not want to have to make a video game selection where the only main characters are a butch girl or a "fashion-concious" man.
Getting things politically correct is all nice and good, but games are meant to be fantasy. For the average person it is a fantasy to be a huge muscle bound superhero or a sexy woman that can domainate.
I love the power and the flexibility of the gameboy. My problem? Tetris keeps sucking me back in.
Nintendo, PLEASE LET ME LIVE.
It started out fairly innocent. My brother offered to let me play one night on his. "Just a few games..." he used to say. It's like crack, and I was hooked. I'm now 22 and it has consumed my life. I have tried quitting cold turkey, but it was like the sky was falling and not fitting into place.
If they would only go one generation without it I might have a chance.
This is a gutsy move in relation to the timing with Columbia and the war.
People are viewing human life as more sacred than they normally do, and know the risks of this ambitious project. It also comes during a serious global depression of the economy, and will of course cost a sh*tload.
That said, I hope it goes ahead and proves more successful than we could imagine.
A feq questions first

Gas Goes Solid

The server is roasted but it seems like having the ability to buy "fuel pellets" would be a huge advance for the automotive industry. I know a few youngens that regularly run out of fuel, so a pellet or two in the glovebox would be sensational.
A few questions though -
What is the cost compared with gas?
How much would cars cost to be converted?
Would they have to be converted?
Would the pellets be safe for the elderly to use or do they have to be handled with care?
Maybe some of you who got to the article could answer these for me.
What I have wanted for ages now is a "business level" IM service that is available for free. I hate the idea that my IMs are free to read by anyone with the inclination, and I don't see why more companies don't encrypt it. Yahoo offers this service as a business package, but it obviously needs to be on both sides to be secure and my mates won't pay for it.
Can anyone give me the name of a product that fits this criteria? Linux version?
While already there are the usual "let me test a bmw" posts, I think it is great to see companies ready to challenge established conventions within the computer industry.
Full credit to Philips Electronics for trying something new. I hope they get some valuable promotion and some excellent feedback from these tests.
This is solving a problem that has already been solved.
Faxes around my office are usually printed computer documents that perhaps have a hand written signature. This fits beautifully into the sending slot. Why would anyone want to stand there holding the thing still while they press a button / click a mouse. No way.
For applications and easy of development Java is sensational, but for everybodys sake PLEASE DON'T USE JAVA ON WEB PAGES WHEN IT ISN'T NECESSARY. As you might pick up on - I hate it, and most of your users do too.
Networking and secure transactions asside, I have a major problem with things like scrolling text java applets. The problem is I see it too much.
In my experience TOS agreements are more about "this is what we can do" rather than what they actually do.
Does anyone have a report where they have actually followed through with the terms and taken someone to court or terminated their connection because of this?
