Asia, probably.. but it is a step in the right direction. Even though most computers can be useful enough to donate to other less fortunate countries, people need to be more aware of how to achieve this and have easier accessabilty to do it.

Well for CD's in general (apart from the usual drink coaster option), they're great for agricultural use with regard to scarecrows... string loads of CD's on one and they move in a gentle breeze (as well as the reflectiveness of them) and frighten off any birds.

Although the scarecrow to CD ratio may not be enough to deal with a minute amount of those damn AOL CD's floating around the planet.

There used to be an ad for Dime bars in the UK, where they were compared to Armadillos (Harry Enfield did it I think)... in that they were soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside... Armadillos!!!

Pity since the sites has been ./'ed, I couldn't see what the soft/crunchy ratio was regarding the test flight.
  5. Night flashes and contacts. on Laser Vision Surgery for Developers? · · Score: 2

My brother has the op done about 18 months ago, and he swears by it.

Initially, he would get flashes of light during the night (or when it was dark), but that went within a month or two.

Problem is, he keeps bugging me to get it done. But I predmoninatley use computers (wheras he is a DJ), and my vision is far worse (about -5.0 in both eyes, plus astigmatism)... not only that but my level of shortsightedness is still getting worse and hasn't leveled off.

Plus, when you get to your 40's don't your eyes start becoming more long sighted?

If it wasn't for the astigmatism, then I could use contacts on a more regular basis. Because I have to use toric lenses, there is less oxygen getting to the eyes... so there goes being able to use the 1 month lenses which you don't have to take out. And the availability of coloured toric isn't as popular (and mucho expensive).

The first time I assembled a computer, I scratched the bottom of the motherboard on the mounting points. I completed the build, but was presented with random crashes. Found out the scratch spread metal filaments across multiple paths, fortunately rubbing the area clean solved the whole thing.

Well now it's my turn to help teach one of my friends how to build a computer! A learning experience for him indeed.

Anyway, what is your view on the grey area of using pirate/cracked software for non-profit/education purposes?

I have been using pirate software for ages for the primary purpose of being able to know how to work essential packages (where your group, Phrozen Crew, Razor1911 and IvanPaulo have been on the best quality tools I've used). And if I find I need to use the software for business needs, then I'll stump up the cash.

In the case where it costs large amounts of money for apps like PhotoShop, 3dsmax, etc I have noticed that some graphics artists have to have legit program keys (registered in the artists name) in order to do business with other companies, do you think that is a better way to go in that sense of checking program legality?

  14. Building Systems on Chip Makers Selling Fewer High-End CPUs · · Score: 5, Insightful

I've found the best way to build a system is to get the mid/high level chip rather than the top end, the savings are large enough to speed up the system in other areas (like lower latency RAM).

If you can build someone a decent computer, but keeping costs down (I don't mean getting crappy componants), they're far more likely to upgrade sooner and in the same manner so the cost is more spread. i.e. someone spends $2000-3000 on a brand spanking new computer (latest everything) but loses the ultra performance crown in 3-6 months, is going to be less inclined to get a new system 1-2 years down the line (unless they have cash to burn), wheras if the costs are under $800-1000, they never lose the ultra peformance crown 'cos they never had it in the first place.

I suppose the nice thing about new chip releases (esp. major revisions) is they knock the lower specced chips down nicely.

  15. Stature? on Keanu Reeves as Superman · · Score: 2

I don't know how well built Reeves (oh, just an extra 's' on the end, another 'studio' connection for him being in the role)... but wouldn't he have to a bit of 'beefing up' for the Superman role, I mean doing martial arts is one thing, but the Superman role has always been a case of filling as much of the lycra suit with as much muscle as possible.

Is this possibly the worse fit for an actor in a superhero role since Michael Keaton in Batman?

OK then, who was the best Batman then? out of the original series and the films? I honestly think Keaton was the better one of the films... but then the first two films were really Tim Burton driven (very dark and gothic) and much better than the rest. Plus who can forget Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman.. meeeow indeed!!

I was pissed off recently because I can't use my Switch (Debit Card) on Dabs, but looking at it realisticly, it makes sense because with most banking online in the UK, most (if not all)Credit Cards have insurance against online theft (wheras I don't think the Debit Cards have the same protection).

But I know that isn't the point (relying on the insurance), because the systems (and banks) need to catch up with the standards that the internet/online world requires. Not only the banks have problems, but remember Amazon.com keeping quiet about major breaches of security and customers bank details being overly exposed... I never saw the image, but didn't someone modify their logo so that it said 'Shhhh!'?,

I agree, it is nice to see a big company like Epson actually commit themselves to *nix support, and for them to raise their hand and say 'Ooops, we're sorting it out, sorry about that'.

Disclosure like this will mean they'll get more respect for being honest about the situation, rather than burying their head in the sand hoping people won't notice (like a certain company and their interpretation of OS security). A company who admit their mistakes will be more inclined to learn from them, rather than focusing their efforts on passing the buck.

After seeing the US version of Robot Wars, it is the actual UK version but lacking some of the behind the scenes stuff (I think) and with a different presenter (Craig Charles presents it in the UK - he played 'Lister' in Red Dwarf).

This is 'cos the BBC licences it to different countries (a bit like the TellyTubbies) so they get the original tapes for them to reproduce their own versions, whereas Junkyard/Scrapheap has the same co-presenter (who is also the exec producer) and they do a combination of UK/US filming.

I'd think that it should have a chance of being picked up by another network, because a series like this that sparks innovation and interest in construction is better for Joe Public rather than Big Brother X (despite the 'socialology' aspect of it), The Mole, etc.

I wish that we're the case, except that even though SciFi is getting more viewers than usual for the new Farscape eps, and it being their second highest rated show (I think). Them deciding to ditch it might not be related to people just downloading the eps, but to their decision of concentrating on LowFi Low Cost (Non Space) shows to please their board/shareholders etc.

  23. Bandwidth Division on Where The Bandwidth Goes · · Score: 2

Damn dialup crappyness, retype whole message time :-(

    Question:

Isn't the excuse of capping broadband connections a moot point, because the general broadband thing is that it is a shared resource? So X ISP saying that 1% of their users are hogging 60-70% of the available bandwidth, then they use that to say 'Right, we're raising prices', in the sense that if there is any load balancing, then the other 99% of users would be able to level up the bandwidth if they needed more, so it divides up (theoretically equally)??

Although I'm spoilt rotten living with my brother in CT, cos the Optimum Online connection (around 5Mbit at it's fastest) has been no trouble at all, damn UK rural 'broadband' (or lack of). Oh well, I suppose I don't have many new Farscape eps to download when they come out :-(.
