also such a shame Ferrari is so adamant about not building 4-cylinder engines for their cars. Think anyone's going to bother making parts for a car with a fraction of the market share? dream on!
The Kernel is what makes BeOS behave like BeOS. If you use a Linux kernel on it, it'll just be a different skin for Linux.
Distributed computing networks don't really count as supercomputers because all the nodes/CPU's aren't working all together at once. Clusters count as supercomputers because all the machines in the cluster work together in real time. Distributed computing networks transmit jobs, have the job done, and then sent back at the client's convenience.
so although i am extremely impressed with how many calcs SETI gets done (i support SETI@Home, and run it on several of my machines) SETI isn't really a supercomputer.
I would just like to note for the sake of doing so that if you install Panther over a Mac that can boot into OS 9 (alongside jaguar or something), you can still boot into OS 9 afterwards.
I mean, anything that kills Kristina from Teen Girl Squad is a good thing.
Aside from that, it really is awesome. Charles County Maryland's Public Schools, where i work, is ripping out all the traditional million dollar phone systems at the schools and replacing everything with Cisco switches and IP phones. Doing so is set to save us $300,000 a year of the taxpayers' money.
of course they pushed it back....

How else would they have the time to steal all the features from panther?
I'm going to go out on a huge limb here, but i'm going to say that Linux V. Freebsd V. Mac V. windows V. Be V. Sky V. OS/2 V. whatever is a matter of personal preference.
Many people prefer to give up some user friendliness and ease for a configureable, extensible, secure Free system. such people will prefer Linux. Some people think it's too much to trade off and stick with windows. Some don't like either and find another alternative. My main desktop OS is Mac OS X. I admit i am sometimes troubled by the lack of configureability, but i am willing to trade some changeable options to have something that works so well and is so compatible with everything. (i have yet to throw a piece of hardware (camera, ext. drive) at it that it doesn't recognize. It's simply awesome.
On my servers i run Linux. I like the configurability and i like being able to control every little thing. but it's a pain trying to get it to work with anything.
I use windows to play games. pure and simple. Windows has all the games, period. However, because of MS's business practices, plus Windows's useability, configureability, security, and technical shortcomings, i rarely if ever use it for anything else. it's a "this program rocks but it's windows only" type of thing.
The point is that each OS has advantages and disadvantages (yes, even Windows. Flame me all you like.) However, all things considered, i try to stay away from windows as much as i can because in most areas, there's *something* that does it better.
First off, it's not MS Windows so it's not *that* bad. second, you can opt to just get a blank drive. Third, it's kinda convenient.
so quitcher bitchin:P nobody has a gun to your head saying you need to buy Lindows pre-installed on a seagate drive. I'm certainly not, although if i was buying a seagate i'd consider it.
Plus for consumers this'll be "wow, no configuration, just plug the new drive in and the OS is there?" it's going to be great. Might even cause another mini-migration from windows for people who decide to get these drives.:)
64-bit on the x86 desktop is not really a 'mature' technology, even though it's been done before with Alpha and Itanium... I for one would hate to spend lots of money moving to an Opteron-based platform, to find out that one of my devices doesn't work or that one of my programs doesn't work.
First off, Alpha and Itanium aren't 64-bit, and in the case of Itanium, the train is slower, doesn't visit any stations opteron trains do, and fares are 10x as much. I'd rather take a chance that something doesn't work for 1/10th as much money than know it doesn't for 10x as much.
Secondly, the x86-64 is fully backwards compatable with all 32-bit code, including 32-bit drivers. everything i've heard so far says everything works fine on opteron.
Not AOL...
Macintosh Plus. Macintosh SE. Titanium Powerbook.
I think it's Apple's marketing dept.
not using linux or a bsd kernel.
Are you suggesting they make BeSD?

... are such diverse elements as:
a stable government
food
running water
shelter
an open source OS
red uniforms
fanatical devotion to the pope
fear
surprise
that is all.
Easy, he'd encourage it. Apple is a hardware company. or at least they think they are.
Not Pokemon!
(European or otherwise).
only if you're serving pr0n.
I'm uncomfortable placing the fate of the Earth in the hands of James T. Kirk again.
:P
Again? HE HASN'T EVEN BEEN BORN YET!!!
temporal mechanics is lost on some people

Also, the fast user switching is awesome!
you get to download as much Free software as you like.
Name a graphical Linux application that is not a game, and has a name that both describes what it does and does not begin in K, G, or X.
That's a real test.
the other part of the test is wether or not they think that's funny.
Indeed not. Cisco made us a good deal on the equipment because we're a school system. Plus, the long term savings will be well more than worth it.

So even at 100KPH it takes 15 days up or down?
I'd imagine that theme would get old on the way up.

For those of you asking, here's Apple's Terms of Service and Terms of Sale.
Enjoy.
When i saw the listing a little while ago, it was up to $15,099. I'll be selling the same song in about 20 minutes at the comparatively low price of:
$5,000 bid
$10,000 Buy-it-now

Of course, what do i know?
It's not a mouse...
:P
It's a real-time planar 2-dimensional coordinate plotter tracking input device.
So there.
