Been to the smithsonian in DC recently? They already have what i believe is a full-size Hubble mockup on the main floor on display. I doubt they're desperate enough for the real hubble to do what you're proposing.
besides, maybe they'll tape the deorbiting. Give it a spectacular last Hurrah like the original enterprise in ST 3.
867MHz PowerPC G4 640MB DDR266 (128MB built-in & 512MB SO-DIMM) 40GB Ultra ATA drive SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW) AirPort Extreme Card Keyboard/Mac OS for SuperDrive - U.S. English 12.1-inch TFT Display $2048
128MB more memory, 10GB more hard drive, faster processor (almost even on bare clock speed, even!) and has OS X with UNIX goodness out of the box, and a larger display by more than an inch. for about $48 more.
and this is a powerbook killer how?
sure, the apple is a bit heavier, but 4.6 pounds is still damn light. Also, do you think the sony really is going to last 7 hours on a battery? i know my 14" ibook has lasted more than 6.
Lengthy boot times indeed are a pain. that's why i never turn them off either. I don't have 15 minutes to wait for my iBook to boot every time i want to use it, that's why i just let it sleep:)

If there's one thing worse than people trying to get TiBooks and such to run Linux...
it's people trying to see if OS X will run on beige-box PPC hardware.
Mac OS X should run on Apples, PPC Linux on the others.:P
that's another good way to look at it. of course, i could make the same argument about P2P, as a lot of the songs i downloaded leaded to my buying a CD.
this is not about the stopping sale of albums at all, as much as it's about artists wanting us to buy the bullshit when we don't really want to. there are certain albums that need to be heard together to be truly appreciated...there are others where the extra songs are just fluff. However, If i believe it's to my benefit to get the whole album as a unit or not should be my decision, not the artist's. It's not as if i can't get the whole album if i want to (From the apple music store it's considerably cheaper than buying it a track at a time). however, if i know the album and think most of it is fluff, i'll just buy the songs i like.
If DVD audio really takes off, I'd be willing to bet you'll see either new (or re-issued) "concept albums" that will only have one "track" and force the listener to sit through the whole thing.
And why, exactly, can't you make a CD with one track?
RFID's replacing barcodes, i think, is an excellent idea. this means you could just pick up all the junk you want, stuff it in a cart (or even your coat, as long as it's not aluminum) and walk out. A scanner scans all the RFID's, calculates a total, you pay and go. Very simple. Even if it doesn't work as easily as this, it's still way better than barcodes. In the stockroom too, this would make finding inventory and moving it around a lot easier and faster.
People whine that they can track every item you purchase with these, they can track you through the store, they can see what you bought...bla bla...
1. Retailers NOW could track every single item you ever purchase. Can they? of course! DO they? No. If they did, making a return without a receipt at a retailer like target/walmart wouldn't be such a hassle, would it?
2. RFID's can be tracked throughout the store. So what? you're being tracked all the way through the store by video camera ANYWAY. I mean really, who cares that when i go to Walmart i go to Sporting Goods, Electronics, then the register? the people on the sales floor know it, the security ppl watching the cameras know it...how will it be any different if i'm being tracked by the RFID of the stuff in my cart?
3. The RFID's will probably most likely be hanging off the items or on the item boxes like barcode tags do now. they won't be embedded in the product itself as many would think. just clip the tag, and throw it out, and BOOM! No RFID. might be a problem if you bring your trash bags into a store or something, but only then:)
Stop whining. It's not big brother coming to get you. it's a new way to run a store.

EM rather than heat

Ant Farm PC

I think the electromagnetic field rather than the heat, noise, or vibration would be the worst for the ants. (yes, i know heat is a form of EM radiation, just bear with me:P) Ants are known to infest stuff like transformer boxes and stuff because they're lured by the EM field. I imagine the EM field generated by case fan motors/circuit boards/procs/drives/PS would have a similar effect, I.E. drive the ants insane. I remember Another Story where someone's iBook (like mine) got infested with ants. They must have been attracted by the EM.
I have an OS 8.1 G2 talking to TCP/IP.
How old are we talking here? Apple IIe?
by that logic, let's just toss paper airplanes across. One of them HAS to get through eventually :P
here's your cheap unstoppable delivery device.
Cheap, yes....but unstoppable? it's so stoppable it has YET to fly more than 1/4 the way through its route!
Implement a Windows GUI that runs on top of Linux.
;)
Check XPde
Or did you mean all the layers of code that are required to get a game running? cause that's certainly more than just the UI

nice features, fast boot times, and 2 themes. Go configureability!
It could be the P1 and Pentium Pro. Pentium Pros came in up to 200MHz, and original pentium topped out at 233.
(p2 200 and the like)
:)
That's quite a trick, since the slowest Pentium 2 made was a 233. Underclocking for longer hardware life?
It ain't the brits, man...
It's those damn canadians!!!
As an NRA Member i must complain about the following sentence:
Point being, games don't kill people - guns do
Guns don't kill people, obviously. Bullets do.
Usually i see people argue both sides of something on /., from Windows to DRM to whatever...
But it seems everyone here has a reason (or 12) not to buy a Phantom.
This does not bode well for the Phantom's manufacturers. At least they chose an appropriate name.

they'd have to actually have useful tech support to do that.
The short answer...
We all know Linux is so good that we don't have to trump it up. it's such common knowledge we can just go with the facts.
Y'know, it can do an infinite loop in 3 seconds.
when WAS the last time Linux was dumped for Windows?

Microsoft's service is akin to buying 12 songs per month on Apple's service
:)
Okay, let's take a look at that...
12 songs * 99c/song * 12 months = 142.56.
I think you meant *ten* songs
