  1. Re:What do the fanbois think? on Nintendo Aims At Oprah Crowd · · Score: 1

The Revolution will be a fanboi's wetdream. Something that I think a lot of people are forgetting about the Revolution is the downloadable game component. Turn the Revolution's controller sideways, and I think you'll notice it looks oddly familiar.

Nintendo has said that one of the features of the Revolution will include the ability to download Nintendo titles from their previous consoles. Talk about backwards compatibility! This is a fantastic selling point which would appeal to people like my dad who used to spend hours playing Super Mario World, but has trouble playing some of the more modern games. I predict this feature, combined with it's low price point, is going to sell a ton of Revolutions.

Suck them in with the classics, then sell them some easy to play nextgen games. Maybe I'm just overly optimistic, but I think the guys at Nintendo have put together a very compelling featureset for their next toy.

In Acrobat go to the View menu > Page Layout > Continuous. This will fix your stuck-in-scrollbar-hell problem. Give PDF a chance because it's really an excellent document format. The best feature of PDF is that it is supported on many different platforms and it will look exactly the same regardless of the program. For those people in the design / print industry, that allows reliable electronic proofs so we don't burn up more trees.

I agree with you that sometimes it's difficult to find smaller, less popular stories. However, I don't think that was the goal of this project. It was designed to see quickly and visually trends in the news; what the media is focusing their attention on.

The value in this kind of tool isn't in the individual stories it shows. The value is being able to quickly see what occupying our society's mindshare. It gives a glimse as to what the media finds worth writing (and reading) about.

  10. Wireless and power... on Matrix-Style Brain Interface Closer To Reality · · Score: 2, Interesting

So now this device communicates over wires, which I'm assuming is also what carries power to the implant. They had said in the article they are planning on producing a self-contained wireless version (which would be really cool). My only question is how it might be powered? Would you need to go under surgery every few months to replace the battery?

Maybe they would use glucose from our bodies to power the device? I would think though that sending a RF signal would consume a lot of juice. Anyone else have any thoughts on how they might supply power to a wireless implant?

  11. Re:It isn't MacOS X that turns people off of Macs. on An Answer To "What is Mac OS X?" · · Score: 2, Insightful

So Apple only sells LCD monitors, and fancy looking wireless routers which are pricey. Big deal! Macs will work with any wireless router, and any VGA or DVI monitor, IDE hard drives (now some S-ATA), USB mice, etc. etc. They are selling high-end branded hardware. You pay for the name / bragging rights. All kinds of "high end" companies do this.

Look at BMW. They also have a strong brand as being high end. Try buying "official" BMW floormats. What's that you say? $150 for a pair of floormats? You can just as easily buy non-BMW matts at a local hardware store for about $10. They will certainly keep the dirt of the floor just as well.

Anyhow, perhaps I've borrowed too much from the car analogy, but you get the point. Apple is marketing themselves as a high end computer dealer. I won't even get into all the great included software that comes with their machines. Oh, and by the way, you can get an all-in-one eMac for about $999. Doesn't sound too outrageously priced to me.

With theRendezvous-enabled distributed build feature it's easy to simply farm out your build by distributing compile workload across idle desktop machines or, better, deploy a dedicated Xserve build farm to do in minutes what would take hours on any single machine.

  17. iTunes making money for Apple... on iTunes for Windows Reviews · · Score: 1

Apple makes money selling music on the iTunes music store. Probably not much money yet, but certainly they will make considerably more money if they don't restrict users to the Mac platform.

Actually, according to Apple's Senior Vice President Phil Schiller:

"The iPod makes money. The iTunes Music Store doesn't,"

In fact, Apple doesn't even see iTMS as ever being very profitable. They really just want to sell more iPods and I think they've come up with a compelling way to accomplish that.
