  2. Micropayments bundled with internet access. on A Viable System for Micropayments? · · Score: 1
One historical exemple of payed-for content over a network was the french Minitel : the cost was directly included with the bill at the end of the month.

The problem with most micropayment systems is the hassle : openning a paypal account is a drag, subscribing for a full year when all you want is a misc page, etc. It's discouraging. For most people, paying the ISP is allready 'paying for internet'.

Paypal should make deals with ISPs : you would get a paypal account bundled with your internet access.

    just my 0.2 euros.

User Interaction Design for Secure Systems

    by Ka-Ping Yee
    Computer Science Department
    University of California, Berkeley

    Abstract:
The security of any computer system that is configured and operated by human beings critically depends on the information conveyed by the user interface, the decisions of the computer users, and the interpretation of their actions. We establish some starting points for reasoning about security from a user-centred point of view, by modelling a system in terms of actors and actions and introducing the concept of the subjective actor-ability state. We identify ten key principles for user interaction design in secure systems and give case studies to illustrate and justify each principle, describing real-world problems and possible solutions. We anticipate that this work will help guide the design and evaluation of secure systems.

  7. Type ahead find on Mozilla 1.2 Betas Start Flowing · · Score: 2, Interesting

Type ahead find has existed for years in IE for Mac, just like it has existed in the Mac Finder since system 7. The behaviour of typing a fiex letters and getting the closest element of a set has been implemented everywhere : file lists, dropdown menus, etc.

That is the problem with the behaviours of the mozilla interface widgets : they don't behave like any plateform.

Would it be too hard to make the widgets behave diffently depending on the plateform ? For example, when you click once in the address bar, all the text gets selected. That works on Windows, but not on the Mac, where the standard is to insert the bar cursor at the point where you clicked. The same for clicking in the scrolling bars : it only pages once, not repeatedly like on a Mac. The same for the dropdown menu (see the comparison of the windows drop down menu and the mac one by Bruce Tognazzini), etc etc.

I think people like visual inconsistency (themes, skins), but hate behavioural inconsistency.

  8. What lacks in cookbooks on The Open Source Cookbook? · · Score: 1
Cooking with recipies is the most boring and uncreative way to make food. It's like trying to learn programming copying listings in magazines : build a text editor ! only 25 minutes ! serves 4 !

What I would like to see in a cookbook is the basics, the stuff you need to understand whatever you are preparing. For example :

Good flavor associations that allways work (rice and fish, fish and white wine, white wine and stir fried green veggetables, etc...)

Get a great taste out of left overs (stir fry old soggy veggetables, turn anything into a soup with miso paste and oyster sauce, etc)

How to give 'balance' to a meal (only one meat, alternate strong and soft, salty/sweet/bitter flavours, alternate textures, etc)

    etc...

Maybe O'Reilly could publish Food, the definitive guide with a stuffed turkey on the cover.

I have tried convincing them that WEP is flawed and that it is a major security breach for a LAN, but they prefer the convenience and say 'but there arn't any hackers around here...'.Hehe.
