I wonder if this would count as Tying, which is a violation of the Sherman Act of 1890. Maybe it will take someone with enough economic clout to fight the issue in court. Mom and Pop hobby stores won't have the money for this.

A "tying" arrangement violates 1 of the Sherman Act when a seller enjoys a monopolistic position in the market for the "tying" product and a substantial volume of commerce in the "tied" product is restrained.

Section 2 of the Sherman Act outlaws monopolization of any "appreciable part" of interstate commerce, and 1 bans unreasonable restraints irrespective of the amount of commerce involved.

The common core of the adjudicated unlawful tying arrangements is the forced purchase of a second distinct commodity with the desired purchase of a dominant "tying" product, resulting in economic harm to competition in the "tied" market

I wish I could remember the marketing term for this. The reasoning is that if a customer can get a product for much less off the internet than in a store, they will waste the stores time getting information on the product(demonstrations and comparisons) and then buy the product online. Because of this, the store will stop carrying that brand of equipment. Compare the price of a laptop on a companies website to the price for the exact same laptop in a store. It's the same principle, keeping your supply chain happy and free from the fear of being undercut. Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, none of this is my opinion, it's from an MBA marketing textbook.

I worked at Circuit City years back and if people had the slightest idea what the mark-up was on some of the AV equipment/Accessories they buy, they would probably be physically ill. To go really off topic for a second, the items with the highest percent mark-up are batteries. That's the reason they are placed all over the store. Just some useless FYI ramblings.

She begged me for the answer so finally I broke down and told her, the lack of a proof for the Riemann Hypothesis had sapped the strength of my manhood. Never, ever let you wife get addicted to the Sims and the expansion packs. The Strategy Guides(read as manuals) will cost you more than the damn games. I guess I'm bitter toward al games now. Battlehawks 1942 - A great Manual, a great game, on a 286, didnt need a hard drive. Aces of the Pacific/Europe - Awesome manuals, excellent games. F15, F117, Gunship etc from Microprose - The shining examples. Why could they do more on a 486 than companies can on the systems out today?

Hopefully it will reduce theft. The amount of inventory "shrink" these stores suffer is incredible. The theft losses from one Circuit City super store in Virginia wiped out the profits for every Circuit City express in the Washington DC area combined in 2001. Personally I'm sick of paying higher prices to cover thefts. Maybe a system that locks the doors when one of these activates a system as the person is trying to leave the store would work. Before anyone starts rambling about this happening to an innocent shopper, hear me out. It would do no more to an innocent person than the current systems. Alarm goes off, employee asks person to inspect merchandise, finds one tag not deactivated, apologizes to person; they are on their way. On the other hand, a shoplifter tries to run out of the store and the doors lock so the person can be detained. Not perfect but it would help.

My wife enjoys working with others and running a successfull house in the game while I usually go for cash. Anyone else remember the lavish manuals for games like Aces Over the Pacific/Europe or any of the original Microprose games? The manuals contained every detailed needed to play the game AND a large amount of material simply for the players enjoyment/information. Now you get a CD, install instructions and possibly a very brief descriptiof of the game mechanics. Thanks but I'll wait a few months until it is in the bargain bin and there are strategy guides online.
