When I was at university I knew a guy that had big problems relating to people and particularly women. He had this ongoing dream of being able to make a female robot that he could program because then he'd be able to understand it. Perhaps these guys are similarly motivated.
But, yes, on a more general/global level it is daft to anthopomorphise robots and geve them feelings and rights. The Korean robotic rights thing is very stupid when you consider that animals - with real feelings - are treated very badly.
Independent journalism exists no longer. They are entertainers providing "infotainment". They have to compete for eyeballs (==revenue) with sitcoms, reality TV, etc etc. They won't get eyeballs and the revenue if they stick with boring facts.
Journailists are also being pushed harder and harder for more dramatic images (entertainment value) with embedded TV crews etc. This allows the military etc to manipulate the TV networks etc very easily: show what we want you to show or else your crew will be embedded with the folks washing trucks; instead of sending back dramatic images of fire-fights they'll send back images of soap suds.
Static discharge (what you're experiencing here) is worse if the computer case is earthed because this provides a better path. For this reason those "earthing straps" etc used to protect sensitive equipment should be connected through a high resistance (1 M ohms or so) to limit the discharge current.
It's mainly in the storage model. Opera is only about 5 MB, OpenOffice is over 100MB. That means it is easy to add Opera to the flash image, but not so for OpenOffice.
The (ab)user side are also muddying the water. Consider the mashup DJs that release their own "creative works" on CD (which they then expect to have covered by copyright) or the hobbiest mashup artist that releases stuff on youtube etc. Is this fair use of the original material?
I agree though that the digital age really makes no difference. The real change has been a shift is society's values. Me, me, me!
If you just wanted to boot up to do some quick web surfing (check/., email, blogs etc) then having a quick boot + web browser etc is great. If you want to run full blown apps like Office etc then you do a full boot.
only if you roll it out on a banana like they showed you in sex ed class.
That's a problem I always had as a teenager. It was easy to keep a condom in your wallet, but the banana got squishy after a couple of days and made an embarrassing mess.
If you think the Windows desktop/server security is bad you should see the Windows CE security! Again, MS have delivered an OS that was designed for a disconnected system (PDA) then tried to put a crappy fence around it to make it secure in a connected world. Too little, too late.
As for trojans, well no matter what OS you run, a dumb enough user with sufficient priviledges can always run a trojan. Nothing new here!
Animals (well higher order ones that we generally associate with food) do not. They reproduce sexually. There is strong evidence that cloned animals show earlier signs of aging http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0YUG/is_11_9/ai_n18608674 . THis might mean that the meat gets tougher quicker or whatever, and it raises ethical concerns too.
BTW a double-yolked egg is not a clone. It is two ova that got deivered down the egg packaging canal together (like fraternal twins).
There were approx 200 million PCs sold in 2007 and 4 billion embedded systems (1:20). Most embedded systems are still using 8-bit CPUs. A 64-bit world is still a long way off.
1. When the start flag waves, click Start->Program->Race. Click Accept a few times to get rid of the the Vista warnings. The program should now run. Your opponents are nearing the first bend. 2. The program is running but the cart is not moving. Perhaps your brand of cart has not written Vista drivers yet. Do some googling and install drivers. Your opponents have only lapped you once. 3. You now have shiny new drivers. As soon as you run them the driver crashes. This is not a Vista problem. This is a lame-ass driver problem. 4. "Downgrade" to XP Cart Edition. Hey, you're moving. Sweet! Now just need to make up those 20 laps you're behind. 6. Write note to self: Next time pick a cart that smells of fish and has peguin footprints all over it!
If you get everything from one place, then there are less people to blame and less chance of stuff not working together.
Yes I know that might be BS, but that's the way many people look at it: If you a Panasonic TV then buy a Panasonic DVD player because they will work better together. Have Windows? Use MS Office. Have a Toyota? Install Toyota branded spares.
Regardless of the facts, PCs are seen to be Windows machines and anything else is "aftermarket".
Some people make money from OSS through service, but not all software lends itself to that model.
I wonder how successful those paypal links are? I've asked a few people with these on their sites and they all said that it brings in very small amounts. Hopefully, with time, people will begin to pay for what they value rather than just paying because they have to.
In the OSS software I write (used by many of the bigger names out there) I've received very little in the form of donations (but thanks to those that have). More has been made by charging people for extensions or by alternate licensing (ie. changing for use of the software in non-OSS situations).
"would" is wrong "might", maybe. Would suggests a very high probability. The previous postings hinted at 1 in 75 and that has now been downgraded to 1 in 30k.
How can we mock USA Today when so-called geeks are so poor at handling numbers.
it is what you want to do with the thing. If you want a web surfer/emailer: ok. Want a CD ripper/ DVD palyer/ music magager companion: nope (software & no optical drive). Want to play your Windows games: nope.
Most of my household uses Linux, but I doubt I'd buy this thing. For a bit more, OK quite a bit more, I could get a Mac mini which is smaller, cuter has DVD etc.

There is no such thing as a citizen. You are a consumer. It is your patriotic duty to consume.
Coffee in space?

Ain't press freedom a great thing!
I already said that!

I fully agree though that going to Office 2007 is a huge step compared to going to OpenOffice.

The point being that if you do dumb shit on any computer you can break stuff.
You are not bound to use Unix dates within the program.
Many finance houses are happily dealing with dates maturing well after 2038 (eg. 50 year loans, retirement plans for 25 year olds etc).

How is it that so many people are so easily suckered?

And (s)he's got a really big ruler!

That might be the build price. By the time you add in margins and other costs it could be way higher.
