  1. Re:More Power To Them on Microsoft's New Core OS Team Learning from Linux · · Score: 3, Funny

But isn't FreeBSD dead? By inference then, FreeBSD->Apple so Apple must be dead also, nothing new here. Further inference shows Apple->Windows and Apple->Linux. This concludes that Windows and Linux are also dead. Blame FreeBSD.

  3. Ah the same old version numbers competition... on Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5! · · Score: 1

Heh, whatever happened to version 4? Oh yeah, iTunes is currently version 4, so if WinAmp released a version 4, it would be *gasp* on par with iTunes to the average consumer. So, with a version 5 it would clearly be one version ahead, and therefore superiour to iTunes to the general public.

Sigh, and I thought the stupid versioning number competition ended with Netscape and IE.

    You forgot to mention:

However, your point is well taken. This command, apparantly, has been "under development" for quite some time, over 10 years in fact, atleast according to the man page. I wonder what are all the ubersecret features they have been working on since then?

Clearly, when fully implemented, this command would do something so great, that it will make every man, woman, and child in continental Australia go "WOW", and then promptly crap their pants.

  6. Apple... on Computer Makers Sued Over Hard Drive Size · · Score: 4, Interesting

Heh, I remember when Apple actually did it THE OTHER way. I was trying to look up a Maxtor 4.0 GB HD that shipped in one of my macs, and could not find any mention of such a hd. The Apple specs clearly said it was 4.0 GB. But it turned out that Maxtor classified these as 4.3GB, whereas apple used the 1024 size cound, rather than the 1000 that maxtor used. Heh.

  7. I thought you don't "own" the song on Testing The Right To Resell Downloaded Music · · Score: 1

I thought when "buying" music, you are simply entering a contract that grants you a license to listen to the music, and that is what you are paying for. You don't own it, they still do, you just have a right to indefinitely listen to the song. With used CDs and the like, it may be considered what is being resold is the physical CDs themselves, not the contract between you and the music company. Meaning, a CD is both the sale of the medium (the CD, which becomes your property) and a contract which grants you the right to listen to the music. With a downloaded song, you don't get buy the medium, you simply pay for the contract, which can not be resold, since it is not "owned". Either way, it should be interesting to see how this turns out. Even more interesting, is the current high bid on the song, of 9700 dollars!

  10. Re:So much for open source at IBM on IBM Releases Compiler for Power4 and G5 · · Score: 1

You don't understand how GCC works. GCC is not comprised of generic code, which happens to work for every processor it supports. No. Instead, GCC has separate code for each processor (or processor family, and separate optimizations for diff processors). This way, IBM could have improved just that ONE PORTION of GCC (that deals with PPC970 optimization), without having to worry about other platforms.

  11. This article is a joke.. on Apple Issues New G5 Benchmarks · · Score: 1

Near the end, the article links to one of their previous articles on the G5, and mentions that interestingly their earlier article had slightly different SPEC results for the G5. The funny thing is, that article talks about the MOTOROLA G5, ie the PowerPC 8500, not the IBM PowerPC 970! Yeah, they were both referred to as the G5, they must be the same chip.

  12. Paranoia on Identity Theft Countermeasures? · · Score: 1

Paranoia is another big problem affects a very large portion of the population (undoubtedly well over 750k cases/year). So I think you should hold up on all that identity theft stuff, and instead concern yourself more about the implications of suffering from paranoia. It is a serious problem, and should not be ignored or dismissed. From your "ask slashdot" question, you are most certainly affected by it.

  14. Linux on new G5s... on Apple Hardware VP Defends Benchmarks · · Score: 1

I wonder if it will still be possible to run Linux on the new Apple Powermacs. When Jobs was talking about the new 9-fan cooling system, he specifically said that all the 9 fans are regulated by Mac OS X, meaning Linux probably wouldn't know how to activate them etc, and thus fry the motherboard, since it wouldn't have any cooling! Obviously, it is possible that thats regulated by a lower-level system component that runs separately by OS X, but we'll have to see when they ship.

One interesting thing about the benchmark report was that both Intel systems were equipped with 2 gigabytes of memory, wheres the powermac G5 only had 1.5. I don't know if this actually has an effect on performance, but its good to know all the details of the tests conducted.
