  1. Asimov on Top 10 New Sci-Fi/SF Authors? · · Score: 1

They're not exactly new, but have you tried Isaac Asimov's Robot-Empire-Foundation series? More than 30 books, so you probably missed at least a few.

  2. whoopee? on Expect DVD Chip Price Wars · · Score: 3, Interesting

I'm less than excited. My last DVD player cost me $90. Yes, $90, new. How much cheaper can they get? Are they going to replace the increasingly poor prizes crackerjack boxes have had to resort to?

  3. GPL on Venezuela Goes Open Source · · Score: 2, Interesting
The announcement, made on Wednesday, stated that from now on, all software developed for the government must be licenced under the GPL.
I wonder if this will be revised to allow other OS licenses.
  4. when it breaks on Shop Till It Drops · · Score: 1

The problem with a 200 square foot vending machine is that when it doesn't give you what you paid for, a kick just isn't adequate...and yet running into it with a monster truck might be overkill.

  5. How about... on How Could TV Survive Without Commercials? · · Score: 1
Micropayments. I don't watch TV anymore, but if I did, I'd gladly pay a small per-show fee for The Simpsons. Really popular shows could make a fortune - think of your friends that are addicted to Buffy, Angel, Friends, whatever.

First seasons of shows would be free to get them going, and reruns would be at a discount.

  6. silliness on Napster Not To Blame · · Score: 0, Flamebait
I'm not sure why Slashdot likes to pretend that music "sharing" doesn't hurt CD sales. Before mp3s, I bought perhaps 15-20 CDs per year, after...0. I know I'm not the only one; of my three closest friends, two no longer buy any CDs, and one buys a few but far less than before. Simple (admittedly anecdotal) evidence.

Unlike some people I'm not going to make excuses about bands sucking or music companies being too greedy. It's stealing, that's all there is to it.

Sometimes morals do have a price, and sometimes that price is low.

  7. doubtful on SciFi Motherlode Donated to Canadian University · · Score: 2, Informative

Probably not, since most things published after 1922 aren't in the public domain, and very little science fiction is that old.
