  1. Re:Don't pooh pooh it on Licensing Computer Techs As TV Repairmen · · Score: 1

Why would anyone in IT who faces the prospect of having his/her job offshored/outsourced, see becoming a TV repair guy as a 'godsend'?

For starters, not all jobs are going to be outsourced/offshored.

Secondly, if my job was on the line of being offshored or outsourced, I'd probably want to start my own business and work as an IT professional services consultant, or IT technical services.

In other words I wouldn't want to repair tv's if my skill is with IT.

Finally, I see no correlation between tv repair and IT professional/technical services such as website development, installation and configuration of networks, database administration, possibly some business systems analysis.

    Not funny.

In the current IT environment, a lot of people have decided to settle for less in order to make ends meet.

It wouldn't surprise me if this guy has a four year compsci degree.

Oddly enough, doing this kind of work can potentially score the guy significantly more money than what entry level positions (help desk) at many larger organisations.

hey, what about all the 'requirements' that companies ask for in position descriptions? A lot of people looking for jobs see crazy things like, Java programmer with 20 years experience and stuff like that?--it's nuts. I've seen some adverts asking for knowlege in have a dozen or more languages(including knowledge of .net and J2EE archictecture) plus networking experience and CCNA+MCSE certs.

That to me is indicative of HR not doing it's job properly. I realize that this may not be applicable to your situation.(probably not) However, I do honestly believe that the skills asked for are overkill in many cases.

I think people looking for jobs now just think that the HR people don't have a clue and so they just state that they know this language or that even if they've only dabbled in it for half an hour because lets face it, the things that some position descriptions ask for is rediculas. No person could have all the skills they want?--ok maybe 0.01%

btw--I'm not really addressing you specifically, rather I'm just commenting on the industry in general.

You seriously need to change your self-image...You become what you think--remember that!!!!

Try thinking positively about yourself and your future and you'll hopefully gain some positive momentum. The key then is to keep that momentum rolling. It's a vicious cycle. If you're happy and positive that usually yields encouraging outcomes. Those encouraging outcomes yield even more encouraging outcomes and so on.

If you limit yourself to failure, the opposite cycle is setup where you fail at one thing and feel bad about it..those bad feeling lead to less effective solutions which lead to more failure and so on.

So I believe that you need to break the cycle somewhat and think more positively about yourself and current situation.

I do believe however that it is a dangerous thing to attempt giving advice to people you really don't know or aren't really qualified to give(i'm no psychologist) but that is what I've experienced so far.(take it for what it's worth)

Dark Angel was a good show. I thought that the 2nd season was getting a tad weird but they could have dramatically improved it over a 3rd season. The cost for producing Dark Angel was cited as the main cause for opting for Firefly. Well, IMO they could have just spent less on the 3rd season instead of axing the entire show. IIRC Firefly wasn't even going to make it as the 3rd season of Dark Angel had been pretty much confirmed but it was at the very last minute that fox went with firely at the detriment of dark angel. Ahhh well...blame fox!!

Does Netspace throttle control certain ports like Optusnet?(i.e throttle controlling the ports that p2p programs use) I'd also be interested to know if this occurs currently with the broadband carriers in the USA? The reason I'm bringing throttling of ports into this is that even though the cap came into effect, the throttling of p2p ports is still clearly occuring with optusnet and that IMO is unacceptable!!(given that the cap has been implemented)

  9. Re:As a former Telstra Broadband user. on AT&T/Comcast Consider Aussie-Style Bandwidth Caps · · Score: 1

This is definitely correct. I'm with Optusnet cable and they are the main competitor to Telstra's broadband. Anyway, with Optusnet cable it was possible to download approximately 16-19gig per month. Since Telstra implemented their caps, Optusnet has followed suit and that 13-16gig has transformed into just 3gig.(for the same price) Do whatever you can to stop this capping initiative from occuring as it will ruin your broadband experience : /

  10. Do something about it! on AT&T/Comcast Consider Aussie-Style Bandwidth Caps · · Score: 1

Broadband in Australia has gotten worse over the last year or so. Telstra broadband has market dominance in Australia and when they implemented their cap, the other big broadband carrier, Optusnet, decided to follow suit soon after.

If AT&T and Comcast put this cap in place, it would be a good idea to immediately terminate the contract(after considering termination penalties) and go with another provider who hasn't implemented the cap. The hope is that such action would send a potent message to broadband operators that by implementing caps, they'll lose customers to their competitors.

I think the situation with broadband in the USA won't deteriate as quickly as it did in Australia mainly becuase in USA there are more broadband operators(afaik).

I've read a few things on the web about the topic. It seems to me that if you are involved with a small to mid sized business, there could be some decent savings on licensing fees etc. Also lots of people site support as being the great thing about windows products, well, if you actually look into it, it costs a heck of a lot for getting that support off microsoft each year. BUT, it's like what others have said, it depends a lot on just how much stuff can be painlessly transferred across to linux whilst maintaining the functionality and ease of use that is required.
