I had a couple mod points, but I think a couple simple analogies will better explain that the behavior exhibited by google, and refered to in this patent, will clearly fall under your definition of "reasonable".

You walk into a library in Mountain View, CA and talk to a librarian. You ask her to help you find some stuff about rosa parks. And PS, this librarian is hot, you talk to her all day every day. She recognizes you and gets to know you as time goes on. And you sometimes give her mail to send, which she makes clear that she will read to get a better understanding of you. And she sometimes tells you when she thinks you'll be interested in one of her sponsors. She is also kind enough to completely forget who you are if you ask her. Oh, and she gives great head.

Another day you walk into a store in New York, NY (doubleclick.net). You find there a man who somehow knows most of the books the hot librarian in Mountain View told you about. He also knows your credit card number and your mother's maiden name. He stabs you and takes you wallet, fleeing the scene.

    Hope that clears it up.

P.S. Google search history now allows you to "star" visited pages and add "tags" to them, exactly like delicious. Only thing is, you can use multiple word tags.

    Realize this:

Most policies that retailers have which a normal person would consider "unreasonable" do not apply to you if
    1. If made the purchase with a credit card
    2. You claim to have made the purchase in California or New York

A couple examples you might not know:
    1. Gift certificates that expire or decrease in value (including maintenance charges): If you claim you bought it in Cali, they will immediately refund the balance. If you bought it in a mall in Boston, say it was a gift for someone in New York. You'll notice on the bottom of the card the words: "where applicable by law". You will have a short conversation with the person who will refund your money if you tell them you brought that gift card into the state of California, they'll know immediately to cut the bull.
    2. Return policies: if you try something and they have an unreasonable return policy or restocking fee for a defective product... just say "but the Visa customer protection says..." and that conversation will be over too. Retailers know the Visa policies but customers don't, so unless you say something, they wont.

That's enough consumer school for today.

The most effective way to filter undesirable content including:
    • Bad P2P files
    • Spam
    • Trolls on slashdot

Is to have a trust network.

One way to set up a trust network is activly. That means you make friends and trust them. This is like PGP. And is very effective for strong whitelisting.

Another way is passively. This includes looking for low-quality posts on slashdot and foe'ing them. People who care to make high-quality posts, in my oppinion, care enough to have high-quality-posting friends. Anybody who wants to can benefit from this by friending that person, and then +3 friend/friend-of-friend.

Sidenote: this is great because you can +3 trolls to find them and then foe them. It's fun to find bad content once in a while since I can ban it from then on.

    ---------

    <New idea>
However, what has not been implemented yet, is an automatic friending mechanism. This is where you mark content as good or bad and the trust network is automatically updated based on how you trusted that file in the first place. This is more difficult to implemently as the wrong parameterization can easily lead to abuse of the system.
