    What fool modded this as "Insightful"? I see nothing "insightful" about one's posing just the question, "So who became more evil Apple or Microsoft?"

    Besides that, the word "evil" has really lost all meaning on slashdot, for how casually it's thrown about around here. Neither Apple nor Microsoft is "evil".

    I call BS.
    I just recently had to replace my hard drive, and I was able to reinstall XP and activate it with no problems. I think there has to be three different hardware changes (e.g. hardrive + motherboard + network card) before automatic activation fails (as at that point it would appear that the OS being installed on a different computer rather than just the same computer with a new component).

    Ah, but the parent refered to "the slashdot way". Just because some slashdot posters may have different opinions does not mean that there is not a "slashdot way" of group think. After all, slashdot uses derrogatory icons for it's Microsoft and Windows stories (the Gates Bork icon and the broken window pane icon); slashdot does not use derrogatory icons for any of its other topics. What does that tell you about the "slashdot way"?

    Many slashdotters keep trotting out the IIS vs Apache canard, just assuming that Apache is more secure, when the opposite appears to be the case. That this keeps being put forth as fact brings into question the other statements thrown around here as if they are axioms with no need for any supporting evidence.

    The only difference between the UI to invoke the "Shut Down" command on Windows and the corresponding UI on Mac is that menu used to access the "Shut Down" command on Windows is indicated by Windows Icon followed by the string "start", where as on Mac the corresponding menu is indicated only by the Apple icon.

    So, if it bothers you so much, just use RegEdit to remove the "start" string, then it will be just like Mac. :-) (Or, you can change the "start" string to whatever you want.)

    Supposedly this will be the case with Longhorn.

    Indeed. The reason is that for 6 years Microsoft sold both Win9x and WinNT, with 9x being the most used version. Many devs targetted Win9x and therefore assumed a single-user environment; it's these apps that don't work on non-admin accounts on NT and its decendents.

    I find it funny that slashdotters, of all people, are making harsh judgments regarding arrogance, as the average slashdot poster believes that he's God's gift to programming. LOL

    Every day slashdot is filled with posts from posters that know so much better how do to things than this or that company. And a slashdotter's proposed solution are always so easily implentable and obvious, that the company that didn't use the solution must *clearly* employ a workforce of utter morons, right? It couldn't be that the company thought of the slashdotter's solution, examined it and maybe even tried it, but then rejected it for various reasons. Nope, that just couldn't be! :-)

    ActiveX is IE's binary plugin mechanism, allowing plugins to run such as Flash, Acrobat, QuickTime, Real, WMP, Java (IE loads JVMs as ActiveX components). Your proposal would cripple IE by disallowing the running of such plugins.

    Firefox is able to run binary plugins, so do you want Firefox crippled in the same manner?

    The only "bad" thing about ActiveX was that it too easily allowed for automatic downloading of malware (people were tricked into installing unsigned malware ActiveX controls). This has largely been fixed in XP SP2's IE via the info bar (eliminating "drive-by" installs and making users jump through more hoops (not just a message box for which a user might click "Yes" either through trickery or laziness). There's no need to disable the plugin architecture altogether.

    Actually, the towers were built to withstand accidental collisions by smaller aircraft (707's, I believe). So, the risk of aircraft collisions were anticipated (as required for skyscrapers), but not for the size of the jets the terrorists use. Which means of course, that the architects are to blame, right?

    Why are you worried about the RIAA / MPAA putting the genie back in the bottle, unless you're using BitTorrent to pirate media that would concern the RIAA / MPAA? RIAA / MPAA doesn't care about people using BitTorrent to share linux distributions and the like, so they don't care about that "genie". But of course, the "genie" that you're referring to is the ability to illegally pirate music and movies, an activity that you seem to defend.

    What's it matter? It's useful for seeing how .NET apis are implemented (if the documentation isn't clear enough). It's not meant to be incorporated directly into your code.

    The Firefox team never showed a video tape of themselves or their products, period.

    Besides, RSS Bandit isn't an official Microsoft product. It's an open source project that was originally started as an MSDN article app on building a .NET RSS reader. It's on sourceforge today. But I guess all those eyes that look over OSS code didn't catch each and every last bug.
