  4. Well here's the thing on Why Typography Matters -- Especially At The Oscars (freecodecamp.com) · · Score: 1

This has been gone over quite a bit in the past few days.

    1) The Academy, not PwC, designed the cards (or contracted out the design). They used a different design house than in years past, ostensibly for cost reasons, but my suspicion is that someone higher up pulled some strings to get a new designer for whatever reason.
    2) The #1 issue with the new design is not the typography, which is an issue...it's the contrast. The old design had gold envelopes with black lettering. Why is that important? So you can clearly see the lettering backstage where it may (or may not) be dark. In that way, the accountants might have been more easily able to see the lettering on their envelopes and more quickly corrected the situation. It's still their fault, but the Academy shares some of the blame, because they were more concerned with things like "How will this sexy envelope look when it's opened on TV" rather than "How easily are people able to read the outside of this envelope under pressure backstage."

They know that these sorts of occurrences are not things like sunspots because they can follow up using measurements of the wobbling of the star due to the gravity the planets exert on it.

Combine the two and you have a reasonable inference that there are planets orbiting this star.

If these are not planets, given the above two types of evidence correlating with each other, what else could they be?

  14. Re:Easy answer on Ask Slashdot: A Point of Contention - Modern User Interfaces · · Score: 1

A lot of this is based on how modern web developers build sites. Currently, and for some time, the mantra is "mobile first", which means you design and build a website on the assumption that most of your users are on a mobile device (essentially, any non-desktop device) and you modify the layout accordingly.

This often means that many websites have way too much white space and too little information because many folks have large desktop screens, and they are seeing a site that was optimized for a phone or tablet, and little to no attention gets paid to how it looks on your gigantic monitor.

Ideally you want to design for those situations, but its a truism in a ton of web-based industries that most eyeballs on a regular basis are people using their phones or tablets. It;s most important that it looks good there, and if you have the resources to design for a gigantic screen, you design for that too. But often that doesn't happen.

It is your personal willingness to support racism, sexism, and cruelty. You sided with a bully when it mattered and that is something I will never forget.
