Are you saying: Disease == "root server responses too slow" Symptom == "too much unnecessary traffic" ???
I would tend to think that Symptom == "root server responses too slow" Disease == "too much unnecessary traffic"
How about: Disease == 'root server has no mechanism to block requests from abusers"
I totally agree - I've actually taken to fliping mine down at night...
Saabs actually have feature to that will kill all interior lights other than the Speedometer. Other guages light as they hit an error condition (low on gas etc.). It is a wonder that other car companies haven't copied it.
> Unscrupulous people want to copy CD's rather than paying for them. This is against the law
> True so far.
Be Careful. Just because someone is unscrupulous AND wants to copy CD's rather than pay for them does not mean that their copying is against the law. If their copying falls under the auspices of fair use it is permissable.
No matter how unscrupulous a person is, if they prefer to copy - for their own use - a CD they own, their actions are *for now* covered by fair use.
If it WAS let out during business hours, whould it have gotten so far? would it have caused much dammage at all?
Considering how quickly it could spread, I should say so.

This is bad for your town because now they don't do anything usefull. ( And I mean that in the most analytical, least insulting way possible.)
This is good for your town, and the rest of us because phone services, steel and concrete are now that much cheaper.
I understand that the pace of the change from usefull to not usefull disturbs you, but there is no long term way to keep both the companies and the customers in this country when other places can do the same job for better / cheaper.
The solution is for the US to do what we are good at. Innovate. At least it is more dignified than sitting around whining.
A simple, small, easy to use word processor that's geared at newbies is what Linux needs. Something that's not so intimidating as Office, something your mom could figure out, without having to ask you "What are all these things(icons) for?"
Ayeee! This is the same thing the uninformed have been saying since the dawn of the computer age. Unfortunately it isn't true. Code tends to live well beyond its intended expiration date.
Ever wonder why there are still so many COBOL programmers out there? Why most Windows users still have an OS based on NT code dating from far more than 10 years ago? Why Linux users are using GNU rewrites of tools that date to the 70's or earlier?
(Incidentally, does anyone have a reference to the NYT article about 2 years ago talking about compmanies that still use punchcards? I believe Ford was one of those mentioned, but understandibly most companies only admitted to punchcard use on the condition of secrecy.)
By the way, you hit the nail on the head of the anti-OSS argument here. There is really nobody accountable for these bugs, legally or otherwise. You're relying on the kindness of strangers, and if they aren't willing/don't have the time to fix it themselves, you're going to have to pay to have somebody else do it.
Or rather the pro-OSS argument. The alternitive, closed source software, means that you HAVE ALLREADY PAID and have little or no recourse if the vendor does not wish to fix the bug no matter how much you pay.
Personally I prefer to have most bugs fixed by the kindness of strangers and have the guarenteed option of buying a fix on the open market if that dosen't work out.
Actually Electric powered or hybrid cars are *more* suitable for some of a sports car's duties, most notably fast off the line performance, for the same reasons that they are efficient; low end torque. Check out the following wired article for a better description / examples of $20 -$30k electric cars that go 0-60 in 4 seconds!

In a related note, you have come close to stating the real purpose of management: To improve the systems by which the company runs.
(Incidentally Demming, who helped revive the Japanese Auto industry after WWII knew this in the 50's. It is strange that it has taken so long to be accecpted here.)

Of course without a professionally calibrated TV it is doubtfull that you will notice the difference.
Ahh the evil seeds of doubt that the audiophile / videophile boards were created to instill.

This is a known Troll. Won't someone, for the love of god, MOD THE PARENT DOWN. What he is saying makes no sense.
Surreal_streaker is right this is a TROLL!
Right... Unless they have set up some sort of corporate entity to shield themselves from liability resulting from their business practices.

Big words from E-Rock-23.
Actually the RIAA would be quite happy to place this on a *junk* file that they have posted to poison the network.
