I see no legal difference between taking a competitors traffic and putting in a low queue, and simply blocking Vonage's entire IP range for the PSTN gateways totally. Poof, end of competition. The effect is the same, why not just be explicit and target individuals?

They have lots and lots of resources. In the same way a T1 connected Xeon server is a more attractive target than my pII with 56k dialup grid systems are much more attractive targets than almost anything else out there.
Why wouldn't it be simpler to just fill the tank, run the car, and then see how much fuel it takes to refill the tank?!? Is there some reason this wouldn't be a reliable test?
Where would you run the test? Denver? Sea Level? Uphill? Downhill? At what speed? At what prevailing winds? How fast would you accelerate?
The odd part is that while driving where you aren't using the brakes a lot, the transmission, weight improvements and aerodynamics will be the only improvements in your efficiency.
Driving without braking a lot (usually) implies driving without accelerating a lot. I don't think weight should make much of a difference.

Why not just vandalize a McDonalds? Better yet, promise - and deliver - support for a limited approach to deter terrorism that Spain supports.

Spain is out of the war, but the public professions of weakness in the face of adversity not only caused the horrible train bombing in Madrid, but will cause more deaths as the American elections roll around. Hopefully the lives of American servicemen will help to keep you safe.

Society shouldn't have to pay for Microsoft's marketing campaign.

Actually, the GRE math sections are easier than the SAT math because there is an assumption that most people do not use algebra / geometry skills after High School.
but I must point out that it is always people who test average or below (or, in general, are unsatisfied with the results of thier own tests) who make these statements, or say that it only tests "test taking" ability, or "book smarts".
Well, I got a 1440 before the recentering (and fell asleep during the test!) and I belive the tests are fundamentally flawed and end up being much more a test of test taking ability than of anything remotely usefull.
It is a travesty that SAT scores are used for anything more than entertainment purposes, especially within 1 standard deviation of the mean, which is where people tend to place the most emphasis on scores.
I think a couple of your assumptions are off and that is confusing you.
1.) When you say "the value (read: size) of the company must grow" you should mean the value (read: dollar value) must grow.
2.) The economy is not bounded in the terms that you are thinking; over the last 200+ years the GDP has continued to grow, and there is no reason to think it will stop.
3.) A company that produces a flat profit each year is increasing in value as long as it dosen't give back all the profits as dividends.
The whole speculation thing is essentially a bet as to future profits a company will make.
Unfortunately a lot of people here in the US pick careers based on how much money they can make, rather than having any aptitude for the given task.
That market economy sure is a bitch. Imagine the gall of these people chosing to do what society most needs them to do, so the rest of us can have a better, easier life.
Who would think that a decade after CNN's brilliant reporting in the (first) Gulf War, Connie Chung would be sensationalizing the news on prime time. I was so embarrassed for them I changed the channel.
