Wow, I didn't expect such a good response. For the subway fences, certainly we are less free, but I'd like to point out what I feel are the most important distinctions. The fences protect people from physical harm, Photoshop controls do not. The fences also protect public property from trespass, whereas Photoshop controls restrict what people can do with their own property, in their own home.
It's like a car that won't move unless you're wearing a seatbelt, or a photocopier that you bought that won't copy money. Let me say I that agree with photocopiers having counterfeit-prevention circuitry - I just think the owners ought to be able to switch it off. Afterall, wasn't the point to stop some dipshit from doing this at Kinkos ? You're not going to stop any real criminals. If they have $5000 to buy a high end colour copier, or if they have the resources to steal one, they aren't going to be deterred anyway.
I wish I had mod points to mod YOU up along with that other guy. Although looking back on the 20th century, I think the key word here is incremental. Prehaps the 21st century will offer us more enlightenment. We're certainly going to need it, if we want to keep from exterminating ourselves.
Not all people think alike, and I came to realize my reasonable, rational arguments mostly just served to control the way other people expressed themselves -- i.e., so that they would express themselves more like myself.
I see... so you not only decided to allow the unreasonable, irrational people continue their unproductive method of conversation, you eventually caved in and joined them as well ?
Sure. For the actual install, I cheated and plugged the hard drive into my main computer. I couldn't boot from cdrom anyway, so this method made a whole lot of sense. I used -O2 for everything. The hard drive is 1GB, formatted as a single partition with ext2.
I really like the Xbox controller, and I'm aware of the hack which allows it to be used as a joystick under Linux. Has anyone actually tried this ? How well does it work ?
No, I plugged the hard drive into my main computer and used chroot. It actually doesn't run emerge very well with only 8mb, so I'm going to upgrade it to 16.
I have and use a 14" TVM monitor from 1992. Does 640x480@70, 800x600@56, and 1024x768@43.5 *interlaced*. Attached to a 486 DX/50 w/ 8mb of ram running Gentoo linux. I need all the compiler flags I can get ! This is not a joke.
You can claim copyright on any work, regardless of patents or trade secrets. If something is patented it can not also be a trade secret, because it has been published in the form of a patent.
I don't think "free of charge" is fair to the manufacturer. There's the cost of producing the disc, plus the costs associated with keeping an inventory of excess discs. I think a fair charge would be about $2-5 plus shipping. I think a better solution is to allow customers to make their own copies.

You've hit the nail quite squarely on the head here, but are we really free if we can't break laws ?
That's ok, if you're on dial-up we understand.
Holy shit! All this time I was playing tetris, I thought it was about blocks!
How much do I have to pay to have the word "Linuxen" dropped from the vernacular RIGHT NOW ?
Are you watching CNN or Fox News today ?

Maybe IBM can give them a list of files which infringe ;)

This thing is about 909gb. What a rip off.
Because Microsoft is more experienced at it ?

I know it's funny and all, but this sort of celebrity crap engenders unhealthy attitudes for all involved. We should probably discourage it.
IEEE reports that the first commercial use will be to track public opinion for companies.
