Behold the Proper Capitalization Nazi! The first letter of every sentence must be capitalized. Additionally, the pronoun "I", used to refer to oneself, must also be capitalized. It is because you do not understand what Open Source and Free software are that you think that they are the same and that they are both equivalent to GPL when neither is.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, I thought that the GPL more or less embodied the principles of Free software.
It doesn't matter if you download music or not since they assume that any decline in cd sales is a result of file sharing. I'm in the same boat as you, I buy about one or two cds a year for myself, and maybe another one or two as gifts for other people.
Very much agreed. File sharing would be a minor issue if the copyright industry weren't choking the public domain. However, since they are insisting on total ownership and control, it's going to be a fight to the finish. I don't know if we will ever "win", but I'm pretty confident that the forces of technology and innovation will ensure that we never lose.
The Linux community really should try to push the penguin a little more. Something as simple as a mascot or logo really does help people who are unfamilar with your product. I bet they see the penguin, and think "I've heard something about this". It really helps to break the ice.
I've switched over just now. I've tried a few Linux distributions over the course of 8 months or so, while my wife dual booted to Windows 98. Now that I've "polished" things up - selecting programs for everything, etc - I removed the Win98 option from the boot menu. If all goes well, in a month or so I'll format that partition and reclaim a little extra space. So now you know one person anyway.
"Intellectual Property is no more of an arbitrary construction than money is."
Are you trolling me ? Real property can only be held by one person. If I give it to you, then I can't have it anymore. Ideas and thoughts do not work this way. I can give you the idea of a particular piece of music, or the idea of how to build an invention, and it does not detract from my own ideas about those things.
The notion of "intellectual property" is to impose a (sometimes limited-term) monopoly on people's ideas, so that although I may share my idea, I am the only one with the rights to benefit from that idea. If we wanted to, we could get rid of the concept of intellectual property tomorrow.
Capitalism is somewhat harder to stamp out. As soon as people have possessions, and some of those possessions are finite, people will trade.
You make an excellent point. Even if software were not copyrighted, individuals and companies could release binaries, and we would never see the code. Although the GPL more or less annuls copyrights, it is this idea of "hidden code" that is at the heart of the matter.
I don't see what capitalism or communism has to do with intellectual property. Capitalism comes about through the trading of goods. If I trade you an apple for money, then I don't have the apple anymore. "Intellectual property" is an attempt to make ideas and expressions of those ideas behave like physical goods. It's an arbitrary construction, and it has nothing at all to do with capitalism or communism.

I'm sorry, there's bullshit patents, and then there are bullshit patents. I read the patent, it's a sad commentary on the current state of affairs.
And apples, promoted by a fanatical man named Steve Jovs, are also more expensive.
In almost any major metropolitan area, there is a plethora of small PC shops who will build PCs, even high end ones, much cheaper than Dell.

Very insightful comment, thank you.
Well, maybe the full 4294967296 GB of RAM didn't fit in the case.

I'd much rather see China and India cooperate, if only so that I could say "Chindia".
