    If you want that sort of performance on a limited power device just write to the framebuffer directly. X doesn't have a monopoly on talking to the graphics hardware.

    I do it often , never had a problem. Hell , I even used to run xterms over a modem link FFS!

    Not a problem if the application is written to support it. There's no limit to the number of X servers an app can link to at any given time.

    No one is claiming X is perfect - but why would I would to exchange something thats imperfect for something that apart from eye candy potential had very reduced functionality and is clearly broken from a network point of view.

    I've never had any dependency issues other than open/libre office whining about some missing libs but I force installed it anyway and have never had a problem except with a few obscure powerpoint slides.

    I only use putty because the laptop doesn't come with eXceed or some other X installation so I can use an xterm.

    Unlike most distros you get a non-fucked-about-with kernel the way Linus released it and its very very stable. Granted , its not very user friendly but if you have even moderate linux skills this really won't be an issue.

    I have to take a Windows laptop home so I can use a VPN to start a putty session to log into a terminal to do unix system maintenance instead of just ssh'ing from my home linux box (yes , I know I can put VPN on linux but its hassle).

    When I've asked why they can't just have an open ssh port they start waffling about security. I'm sorry , since when are VPNs more secure than ssh? Never, thats when. I'm sick and tired of know-nothing Windows admins running IT infrastructure.

    The money markets don't generate any wealth - they simply move money around. Someone gains a lot of money through lots of people spending or losing it. Where do you think all that money in the markets comes from in the first place, money trees? Wealth ultimately comes from physical resources whether you like it or not.

    So the prediction was wrong. It still doesn't mean there is infniite oil out there and even if there was - there isn't infinite O2 in the atmosphere to burn it with. That total CAN be measured and its finite.

    Isn't it? And short of just printing money where does this infinite wealth come from then? Ultimately at the base of the pyramid that wealth comes from is natural resources. And there arn't any left there won't be any wealth. You can be the richest man in the world but if theres no oil to fuel your car or food to put in your stomach then that money means jack shit.

    Well thats your tough luck for living in the arse end of nowhere. Here in europe I have literally
    hundreds of historic sites I can visit and a similar number of beaches in that 900KM radius.
    Sure, I'll fly if I need to cross the atlantic or whatnot, but why put myself through the stress
    if I can just jump in the car and get to my destination later in the day with my luggage not
    having moved from the boot? Plus there'll have been plenty of nice places to stop off on the
    way.

    Well fair enough, but I supopse there are different definitions of easy. It could be easy in the sense that its possible for almost anyone given enough time (like building your own house) , but not in the sense of you'll manage it in a week. Problem is I only had time when I was commuting to learn german from a book and some mp3's, its not like I had anyone to practice with 24/7 like you do when speaking japanese. There's only so far you can go with a language on your own. Beyond that , unless you live surrounded by the language on a daily basis you're stuck speaking it like a baby.
