where at one point all of a sudden some guy a few rows in front of me shouts out "I was blind but now I can see!" on of those moments only a coder can truely appreciate I guess:)
You see all it requires is for users to be re-educated and they will love Vista. The same way that if only goverments could re-educate the voters they'd have nothing to gripe about.
What is it with the software industry that makes it think it has a special case with so-called "Look and Feel"? Unless its trying to pass itself off as an exact copy of FaceBook a.k.a. fraud then I don't see the problem.
In the fashion industry people will get design patents and others will create copies with say four buttons instead of three. In the auto industry things like body panels are even patented so when you get a copy it does n't fit exactly because its not a 100% copy.
Yeah that's right, the sanctions that where working and containing Saddam.
You're also right that the US did n't invade Kuwait, it invaded Iraq after buts thats okay because Iraq invaded first, but granted the US did n't gas Kurds.
The UK also got to invade Iraq twice (before it was Iraq) and had already bombed Kurds the first tie. Winston Churchill at the time (1920) infact also wanted to gas the Kurds. A chilling quote: "I do not understand this sqeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poison gas against uncivilised tribes".
Anyway like you say apples and oranges, but at the end of the day its all fruit when it comes to causing suffering.
Well some types of trees last hundreds of years without any attention. I'm wondering if a massive tree planting drive would make any difference or would it bearly scratch the surface?
Because I'm sure you (as everyone ought) refer to Mr. Cruise and Ms. Kidman, or Mrs. Spears and Mr. Timberlake (I'm sorry, I may be out of date, Mr. Msgmonkey) and good Ms. Winfrey's show, and the OS that Mr. Torvalds wrote. I'm sure you always debate the merits of Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain, as well as Mrs. Clinton when she was still running. To refer to them as any other way would be as insulting and offensive as neglecting the prefixes on Mr. Emeril's or Dr. House's television shows.
I don't know how it is in the US, but in the UK if you was having a debate with someone you would refer to your opponent by Mr/Mrs/whatever or if you was on good personal terms by their first name but never thier last.
Common decency would at least dictate that he refers to Bill Gates as Mr Gates rather than "Gates", I find it offensive
I see you're a fan of the New York Times. However, if you would care to peruse other media outlets, you'd see that people are *routinely* referred to by last name only. See this article at Reuters (one of the major wire companies), where, after the first mention where the full name "Bill Gates" is used, the article consistently uses just "Gates" to refer to him.
If this offends you, you need to get a thicker skin.
These people are reporting and not attacking Bill Gates himself as it seems RMS is. Refering him as "Mr Gates" instead of "Gates" would make him sounds much less obnoxious.
This is a BBC UK news artical so maybe it's a cultural difference but in general the US seems to be a lot less formal but it would be regarded as a cultural faux pas in most of Europe. It's got nothing to do with thick skin.
Most likely the GSM functionality of the phone is completely seperate. You can buy embedded modules today that are basically a phone minus the screen and keypad. They have serial digital audio links and the process of making calls is done via AT commands.
A phone that allowed the user to modify the GSM stack would never get type approval.
Anyone know why they only have GSM 850 & 900? Atleast half of the networks in Europe are 1800 and we're now in theage of tri-band phones. It's nice it has WiFi and everything but it seems that this is more like a PDA with a (not very capable) cellphone tacked on, it does n't even have EDGE support.
They are talking about plastic for making CDs, not glass for making telco infrastructure.
Keep in mind these people still think the future is in selling discs to people.
That's crazy, for the simple fact that polycarbonate is normally opaque anyway, you dont need special "optical grade" for CD's thats why I thought they where talking of POF but I'm wrong there anyway because POF uses acrylic.
Either way I'm sure you could find another substitute plastic, plus besides only a fool would think restricting the ability to make CD's would curtail piracy, the future is data sales thats why I thought "hmm, restricting infrastructure, how sly". It seems I under estimated how much these guys dont get it.
With all due respect but disregarding what good prison would do this kid as "complete ignorance" is ignorance in itself. The kid is 18, even if he saw just a year of jail time, you mix him up with all kinds of career criminals you end up getting out something worse than what you put in. Or you could belive the incarcaration industry that he will come out a reformed character. Tag him, limit his activities, get him to do community service that gives a net gain instead of the cost of sheltering and feeding from the state.
I'm not against prison, I just think there are more effective ways of punishing him.
Surely a combination of barring him from ever entering an academic instution again, access to computers, heavy community service, etc etc would be more of an effective punishment then the state feeding, clothing and sheltering this guy for 38 years. I'm not being soft on the guy but it seems like if he had commited a violent crime he would have been looking at less time.
That instead of using mutliple individual boxes we have one big main machine which would be designed for virtualisation and fault tolerance.
We could call this new kind of machine a MainFrame or something similar. I'm sure the clever guys at IBM or the other big tech companies could come up with something.
Over doing nice things for someone you want to get romantically envolved with is a sure fire way to get stuck in the "Friend Zone". She will be like, "OMG You're just the best friend ever!" and with that sentance it will be game over.
I'm not saying be an asshole, but women expect different things from a lover and a friend.
Like any discipline you have to put the theory into practice. Since we like car analogies here on/. you would n't expect to read a manual on driving and then jump into a car and ride off into the sunset.
Guys who are awkward around women summon up the courage to make an approach, get shot down and then beat them selves up and dwell on the bad experience. If you read the material available you'ill realise why you got shot down and what makes a woman tick.
You should read all the material you can get your hands on and improve yourself and start to feel good about yourself as women can spot low self esteem a mile off. Read DeAngelo, Mystery, etc, put the effort in, find out what works for you formulate your own style and get rid of your bad habits.
It's not difficult but it DOES require effort, people who are lazy and then feel sorry for themselves should not expect any sympathy.
Language Magic Bullets

The Return of Ada
·
· Score: 2, Insightful
Most projects do not meet their goals and/or timeframes from bad project management. Whilst the choice of language is obviously important, I have never heard of choice of language being a major factor when reporting on contracts that are over due/over budget or plain just dont work.
I'm just worried that some PHB will read this and go, "Hmm, Ada, we must use that!"
Btw Ada is n't that bad a language, but does n't guarentee success. I remember being told that an Ariene rocket that exploded mid flight was written in Ada, the cause was a overflowing integer.
That spring into mind:
Record revolution stability, the speed of playback varies throught playback and each recording would be different length.
Synchronizing the start of the recording to the exact same start since this is analog and there are no sample boundries.
Stability in the clock generator for the ADC, same problem as revolution stability but not as accute.

The kind of shock these people would like to apply is the one applied to prisoners attempting to escape in The Running Man.

Retailers love to offer 5 year extended warranty because of the Bathtub Curve.
Basically if a product does n't fail within one year then the probability it failing within five year years is very very low.
This curve applies very well to consumer electronics with the added advantage that they depreciate in value quickly too.

I once read something along the lines that presentation is90% of the arugument or something along those lines.

You're right of course, on the BUY NOW section it lists the phone as 850 & 900 left me dazzed and confused.
Note to self: Don't comment first thing in the morning.
Note to self(2): Dont leave note to self on slashdot.
Sorry, I went straight to the BUY NOW section, where it offers "GSM 850" & "GSM 900" which what they mean is 850/1800/1900 & 900/1800/1900.
Note to OpenMoko: You could make this a bit clearer.
Note to Moderators: Please be gentle :)
Although I stand by the EDGE comment.

Is that one up version of the super dollar.
And yes, I know its technically correct but it's also ultra-geek even by slashdot standards.

Not that the US has some kind of monopoly on 'optical grade polycarbonate' but I'd love them to restrict access and see where it gets them.
Hint: All fiber used for telco/datacomms infrastructure is made from glass.
