It should also be pointed out that the link in the story above is showing off the dev kit's interface, and is almost surely not what we will see in our homes in November.

I like this video very much, but to paint the PS3 as "not sexy" seems kinda flawed. It is very sexy. Just very expensive and demanding. A more apt analogy would be a "rich bitch" type, representing the PS3, with a "girl next door" representing the Wii. Both are hot, but one is super annoying, is always spouting shit, and requires you to spend vast amounts of money to even consider any sort of interaction. The other however, is cool, down to earth and ready to have fun. Right now. And she's fine with just hangin' out.

Seriously though, unless the addon is less than $200, (which it almost cirtainly won't be), Microsoft is going to loose their ability to knock the PS3 as being overpriced. I understand its nice to give gamers the choice, but if you actaully want an Hi Def DVD player (I do, and I don't think I'm alone), the PS3 will actaully look like a really good deal in comparison to the 360+HD-DVD.

Who knew I'd ever use the words "PS3" and "good deal" in the same sentence?

And that's not to mention all the other superior fetures... bigger hard drive, more advanced CPU, HDMI, etc, etc, etc. Could it be that "crazy ol' Sony" actaully took the right path in this high end market? I doubted along with the rest, but seeing Microsoft present the alternative really makes me wonder.

I couldn't disagree more. Well, maybe I could a little... I do agree that Colbert is rarely laugh out loud funny...

    However!

I don't think one needs to love the subject in order to satirize it. I don't think this has ever been the case. Do you not find the Daily Show funny either? They are downright vicious with thier attacks sometimes. Very rarely do I get the sence that they have an affection for thier subject matter and I think that's a good thing. If they donned a "just kidding!" attitude, it would remove the potency of both the humor and the very valid cultural statement that they are making. (This all applies to The Colbert Report as well.)

I will admit that the meaness sometime sucks the merriement from the room. The too-true-to-be-too-funny principle often applies for both shows, but while Steward is much better at laughing it off and playing the room, Colbert deliberately wallows in it. (See his keynote at the Washington Press Dinner. How could he even stand it?) But I'll say again: this is not only a good thing for comedy, its a good thing for our culture. Often this satire is so scathing that it far outpaces the standard news organiztions in "sticking it" to the guilty parties, a practice that is very important in a free society. This is what, at root, makes these shows so entertaining: people simply crave that biting hatred of wrong-doing-organizations that seem to be getting a free pass from the rest of the media.

We're talking about a very unique product here, not something that's readily available.

Granted, the trouble one would have to go through to contact the Hong Kong authorities is significant, however there very well might be /. readers who are from Hong Kong reading this, whether they are in America or Europe or (gasp!) Someone from Hong Kong and living would have particular interest in this, seeing as how it means they most likely won't be getting their black DS Lite.

    Of course it is art

It's not as simple as all that. I too agree that the "what is art?" discussion is pretty tired. (I endured years of it in college getting my degree in Visual Arts.) However, I really encourage anyone who is even a little interesting in art and/or games to give this first episode a listen. They make some points that I hadn't thought of and give some really good arguments for different ways games could be seen as art, and how someone in the general public might be convinced.

Here are three guys who all of whom are three things you rarely see in combination: very intelligent, well spoken (they all have backgrounds in journalism), and gamers. To hear people who are truly passionate about gaming having a meaningful discussion about video games' roll in society is not only interesting, but an important step for gaming. I don't mean to disparage other gaming podcasts/sites/whatever, but to have NPR dedicate an amount of time (albeit a small one) to a serious discussion about games is very significant. This is National Public Radio, for crying out loud. Think about that.

It doesn't sound as if every episode will deal specifically with the argument of the artistic merits of gaming, but it does sound as if this will be focused more on the cultural significance of games and gamers and not news and reviews, which is something not found yet many other places, and cirtainly not with this kind of focus.

The screen tends to get a little greasy from games that encourage you to just use your finger, but that's the only real loss in visibility, and is obviously easily remedied every once in a while.

The screen was built to be touched, and while I can't speak for sure for the new Lites (I can't imagine otherwise), you'll have the best, most visible experience just using the product as it was designed.

Take a deep breath! Take that cloudy plastic off! This is game system, after all. It's no fun if you're stressed about keeping it pristine for the next ten years.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that a push service like this just won't have a place for even new indie or limited release films, nevermind smaller films from 5, 10 or 20 years ago.

While us techies might be able to see a big difference, many people can't. It doesn't help that nearly every 360 title thus far was either a port, was originally developed for a "lesser" console, or the same title (or a similar one) is also available on current gen consoles where they don't really look that much worse.

More power is great, but so far it hasn't translated into anything so astonishing that invokes the "I have GOT to have that" response from the general public. But the last console transition was unique like that. It was the first time we were really getting into realistic looking 3D graphics and that astounded response drove alot of console sales.

I would agree there is an amount of variety in the gaming industry but compared to the film industry its not nearly as developed. This will come with time of course as the film industry has a 70 year head start. Games like the Sims and Katamari Damacy are the exeption that prove the rule.

You state that "the movie industry is also sucking as of late," because (I'm infering) of a lack of big event movies. This is precisely what is happening in the game industry. As entertainment consumers we are getting gradually more sophisticated as a whole. We don't want McBain 9, or BoneStorm 7, but rather a wider variety of smaller features that appeal to our diverse tates. The film industry has been going through the same thing lately and as a result indie films have become incresingly popular.

My main point is that the game industry's sector comparable to the "indie film" is still pretty under developed. Casual gaming is definately on the rise, but I think there is a market for more "middle budget" titles. Something that might still consume a weekend or two of my time but doesn't neet to sell 5 million copies just to break even.

Where are the games that could be compared to indie films? The game industry will never develop if they don't try and broaden their scope.
