Last minute editing of ppt presentations and easily displaying through a room's digital project are two things that would push me towards a windows netbook.
I do not agree that we are good at evaluating teachers. 90% of a student's opinion of a teacher is based on the grades they receive. Another 5% is simply arbitrary--disliking mannerisms and such. One of twenty times it might be a useful judgment.
However, were it not a troll, the "Try again." comment would bother me. Someone may have little to contribute to the thread except for a link to a journal article. Let them post it! It still gives information to a non-negligible subset of the slashdot readership.
It appears he has been completely ripped off with the program 'Touch Physics' for the iPod and iPhone. Before this article, I didn't know any better and bought the clone.
I never click on ads either, but I found myself clicking on Google ads. They are very smart.
I search for "amazon blu ray" because I want to buy a blu ray player on amazon.com. In my opinion amazon.com requires no advertising when a query asks specifically for them. The top hit is the relevant page on amazon.com. However, I automatically click on the ad instead because it's equally relevant and it sits higher on the page.
Maybe if Amazon hadn't paid for that ad, a competitor would have and the sale would be stolen some small percentage of the time. If that chance is small, then companies are paying for a lot clicks they would have had for free. Regardless, I've clicked on many google ads without even realizing what I had done.
It was in direct response to the parent comment that a cap in salaries will result in fewer people pursuing the profession.
I do know how much medical school costs; it's outrageous and there's no doubt it turns off qualified people. You might say that the most passionate should be undeterred, but I don't think that's realistic.
I wouldn't be surprised if the amount of debt accumulated in professional programs selects for the type who are fixated on the pot of gold at the end.
If it takes a Porsche to motivate you through med school, then I don't want you as a doctor anyway. Much smarter people work for a lot less in non-medical fields.
The frequency of double-Y's must be known in the general population, and it's hard to think of things that would cause a person to be both double-Y and an evil person. So I think any increase in the frequency of double-Y's in the prison system is a pretty conclusive causal relationship.
Suppose a friend of yours starts working at google. You have to presume that he can then see every search you've ever made. Or suppose they go to work for facebook and they can now see how many times you clicked on their girlfriend's profile in the last month...or any girl's besides your girlfriend's.
Collecting this data can damage people's lives because we don't expect to be tracked. We assume that the employees in these companies are far away and too removed to have any interest in us. You can say that there was never an expectation of privacy, but in reality we all browse as though our identity is meaningless to anyone with the power to see it.
I wish I had never made a choice at all. I had high hopes when I got a quad core system, but the current state has disgusted me.
It turns out I still can't run matlab, watch a flash app, and move the mouse all at the same time in Vista on my Core2Quad HP box. Maybe if I'm running 3 instances of matlab maybe I'll see an improvement the quad core over say my dual core laptop, but based on everyday uses the upgrade in systems was an infuriating waste of money.
Sometimes the quad core system can't even handle updating the mouse position! I'm keeping my f***'ing P3 plugged in for now.
It was proved that for an admittedly infeasibly slow cooling schedule, simulated annealing will converge to the global optimum. Apparently (I didn't read the paper) it was also shown that this is true because at that cooling schedule, you have time to visit almost every possible state anyway!
My story doesn't involve seeing anything--I felt it instead.
I was lying in bed facing the wall and I felt someone sit down on the bed next to me. I was petrified because that side of the bed was flush against the wall, so this was impossible.
I had not yet fallen asleep and I was too afraid to move a single muscle for several minutes afterward. My heart was beating out of my chest. One of the most terrifying experiences of my life.
I tried this, but they still called and I was left without a bank card in Europe. The collect # they gave me was BS as well since it sends you to a recording. No operator will let you stay on an international call for five minutes without someone saying that they will accept the charges.
To be specific, don't rely on Bank of America. When I finally got through to someone (at some expense) they couldn't help me because their system is so fractured that some of their 800 numbers only work for accounts opened in certain states.
It is certainly tweaked based on domain knowledge about helicopters. For example, some tricks were used to get the helicopter to fly upside that were not simply 'learned' by the machine.
I'm sure user feedback helps in determining relevance. When they have information on which of these query refinements people click on most, their results will improve.
I haven't seen "Last King of Scotland" or "Ray", but based on the others I disagree. There are some memorable characters in there (DDL in There Will Be Blood was excellent), but Ledger's is up to par. I didn't know how gifted Ledger was until this role.
"If you are so drunk that your friends are inspired to take pictures of you, then it is likely that you have a drinking problem. "
That is outrageous. Social drinkers have too much from time to time. A picture like that means nothing, and I would blame them. An real alcoholic may not get caught hugging the toilet because their tolerance is too high.
The letters always look nice, but I struggle getting them to appear where I want them to with (you've got to be a master to get an embedded image not to appear in the worst possible place).

I saw no mention of the EPA in the article.

So what does google get out of this?

That could be why dermatology is one of the most competitive residency programs to get into.

x = vector(mode="list")
x[["joe"]] = y
x[["bob"]] = z #z can be a function!
x = list(joe=y)
x$bob = z
x = 1:10 #integers from 1 to 10
#set all even elts of x that are less than 7
x[(x < 7)&(x %% 2 == 0)] = -1
#y is some big array with several dimensions
#I and J are vectors of integers
z = y[I,,J,,, drop = F]
#'z' is now a sub array
z = y[I,2,J,1,]
#now z is a subarray with fewer dimensions

I'm more interested in the likely consequences than the causes at this point.
