the guy who gave this speech has a great deal riding on whether what he's saying comes true or not
Is this where we say "well, duh!"?
He's in the media business, and is predicting things relevant to the business. I'd be surprised if he gave a speech about cabbage farming rather than media!;)
And his premise is pretty much wrong because, for good or ill, English is already the international language, and was long before the internet came about.
This is the arrogance he was hinting at - the failure to look to the future, and sticking with good ol' English! Sheesh! Did you actually READ the speech?
That said, he did bring up some good points. To tell you the truth, -I- can't bring myself to watch American TV
Ok, you've scored a couple of points with me now!:) But do try to keep a broader view of things, ok?;)
While I agree with your point about polygons, I feel that claiming that Its all shit now compared with 20 years ago is going a BIT far.
How can you seriously claim that no books, films or music tracks stack up to those of one or two decades ago?
Sure, we have a lot of 'eye-candy' but there are gems, too! I could list my own examples, but since this is such a subjective topic, I'll avoid boring you with them.
I just want to know if you truly mean that EVERY single piece of literature, music, film and HiFi equipment is inferior to those 20 years ago?
I have to voice my agreement here.
I haven't bothered getting a new PC for some time (I have a P90), so my choices are getting pretty limited.
Sure, I play some of the latest games at work (I love my workplace), but at home, I can barely run StarCraft! (I can and do play it - still THE best RTS in my books!)
I haven't played too many emulator games, but the couple I have (old Amiga games...) were great!
I may be impressed with games that require computing power similar to a decent Beowulf cluster, but since I can't run it at home, I won't buy it.

I got a bitch of a solution. Post the IPs of the cracked boxes and the server logs. Time for some vigilante justice... slashdot-style
I hope you were kidding. How will attacking the thirdparty, cracked boxes help at all? If anything, the list you mention should be sent to the owners of the cracked boxes, so they can close them down and thus disallow the spammer access to this resource.
While your willingness to help is admirable, you may want to rethink your methodology.
There is a perfectly valid reason why you couldn't understand the plot in the original Mission: Impossible,
You're just stupid I know that's not nice, but truth sometimes isn't.
Wow - beat me to it by 'this much'..
I find that movies made in Hollywood is 'dumbed down' because the American test audiences are just too dumb to get the plot. This explains why in many recent movies, a transparent plot is explained, word for word by one of the characters. I don't know about you, but that drives me nuts!
I'm not anti-American, just anti-stupid-American...
Since he started on Hollywood movies, Woo has put out a lot of average to mediocre movies. Who can remember "Hard Target" (his first US movie) or "Broken Arrow" without shuddering? I know I found them painful.
No, Woo should have stuck with what he does best, gritty Hong Kong Action Theatre movies. Movies like "Hard Boiled" or "The Killer". Where having two handguns, slow-mo sequences and unbelievable acrobatic fighting moves is not only accepted, but expected! Throw in some comedy (keeping the action!) in "Once a Thief", and your HKAT experience is complete.
Put Chow Yun Fat in a Woo movie, and I'm guaranteed to be in the audience! (he's in both "Hard Boiled" and "The Killer")
For another movie with a lot of Capoeira, see the fun flick "Only The Strong", starring Mark Dacascus. Be prepared for a mediocre plot, but great Capoeira!
We learn by making mistakes, correcting them, making new mistakes, correcting...
Think about how you learned to ride a bike. I doubt anyone rode a bike perfectly the first time...
I really enjoyed reading this discussion, as I learned a lot of history that I never knew (I studied geography, not history in highschool (yes, we could choose))
Having said this, though, please keep in mind that it's a movie, not a historical thesis on film.:)
I feel that Microsoft will ignore the irrelevant questions, and reply with another 'polite' request to have it's copyrighted material removed from Slashdot's servers. As there is a copyright notice associated with the document, Slashdot's position on keeping the whole document is (legally) shaky, IMHO. Leaving the posts with portions of the document should prove a no-brainer win for/. however - under the fair use guidelines.
Personally, I think/. should not remove the post, - add a notice to the top of the 'offending' post stating that 'the following may contitute copyright breach by the comment owner... Continue to fight for the right to use the document as a news item, and for discussion..
The C++ Compiler v5.5 is not equal to C++ Builder 3
I have not read either licence, but I'm sure that they will differ, as the Compiler is freely available, but (in most cases) you still need to purchase the Builder.
I agree, however, that reading more than one paragraph of a long licence is required before posting a story like this.
Fifth, redundancy is good for language. Logic is bad. The way we think is redundant and illogical. Language should follow this system also.
We may think in a flowing way, but when we try to communicate our ideas, do we not try to have them make sense?
A language with a nice, logical grammatic structure is needed to do so. English, though I agree it is the most common Internet/trade/airtraffic control/etc,etc language just doesn't have such a structure! Personally, I speak two languages (English and Norwegian) fluently, and I would like to learn more. I've peeked at Lojban and I like the look of it. There are freely available texts on the site, to learn from - always a bonus!
I think it is sad to get so many people who have such high regard for their own abilities and opinions that they have nothing better to do except flaming Katz. While I may not alway agree with Jon, I repect his abilities as a writer, commentator and discussion generator. I find his general attitude to be refreshing, even when I don't agree with what he says.
I hope flamers will try to express their opinions in a more mature fashion in future.
The opinion Jon was trying to post, if I understood him correctly, was that most (if not all) organised religions have their flaws. The original concepts of Chrstianity (and other religions)where kindness and love are the prime concerns have been reaplaced by institutionalised worship. This worship seems to have forgotten much of the original concepts, and focus instead on the "bad" things in life, like "sin", censorship, distrust and the like. I agree with Jon's view here as I feel that these religions have often caused more problems - religious wars and the like - than they solve.
For those of you who liked Agent Smith, Hugo Weaving will be returning for the next two movies as Agent Smith. How, you ask, as he was destroyed in the first movie? Well, let me quote Hugo directly (I'm a friend of his brother-in-law): "I'm not huuuuumaaaaan!!!! I can't die!"
Removing people is progress....?
Yes, lets remove all those pesky actors, and only do CG stuff!
No-one enjoys seeing real people anymore, so it won't make a difference!
Sheesh!
..and that might just cost the $2 million they quoted!
;)
How can they possibly justify the $2 million figure? What do they pay their web developers, and where do I sign up?

"You are not your job..."
Your point is excellent and well put.
We need to educate everyone in the use of encryption, starting with the same "not-so-savvy friends and business associates"...
Knowledge, to use an old saying, is power, so let's empower 'the masses' !
And fight these government policies at all levels!
