The assertion ifconfig only displays one IP address per interface also demonstrably false.
Mhm. I demonstrably tried it over here and indeed ifconfig (from net-tools 2.10-alpha) shows one IPv4 address for interface that has 2 IPv4 addresses. Aren't you talking about interface aliases? That's a different thing.
You and burglar are standing in your living room facing each other. (you can now branch the scenario now depending whether there is any gun on none/one/both of you). The cops burst in the room. What do they do? Shoot everyone in sight? Or evaluate the situation first?
Just tell me what did have the cop on his mind: "A guy appears. He might he be very dangerous => shoot him dead" ? I really hope it does not work like that. Do you think that the cop thought he can see a gun? Or do you think that, the cop thought he can see the guy reaching for a gun? Or the cop thought he can see the guy putting his hands somewhere the cop can't see them?
If you were hacked by inserting a rogue USB flash drive or you allow access from world to ssh and use password authentication with weak password then no miraculous router will help you. We just want to validate your claim that the hack was due unsecure router. Misconfigured router or system is much more likely.
And TFA proves it. Linux creeps in everywhere. I gets in small and starts spreading wide, popping up in many forms, at unexpected places and once there, it is very difficult do dislodge. The only difference is that it does not result in the death of the host.
Today the reasons for war is not the effort to take assets and resources. Instead the reason is to help the side that shares the same ideology or some similar reason. Or that is at least what the politicians wants us to believe. But even if the reason are the assets and resources, then the point is moot considering how much assets and resources could be simply bought with the money that goes to the war machinery.

These days the journalists do not fully research the topic. It's not what pays the bills and it's not their mission. At best, they just put together a few sentences and rush it to the front page. So I do not expect the article to be accurate and informative and I rather prefer to head directly to the comments section. People, who comment there, are quick to point out flaws in the article, add more accurate information, links, references and personal hands on experience. If the site, that you follow, does not have that kind of comments, it's not worth following.
The US has civil asset forfeiture.
The US has citizens, that did nothing wrong, barred from voting.
The US has TSA and constitution free zone.
The US does not have universal health care.
The US has gerrymandering.
The US does not mandate paid parental leave.
The US has trigger happy cops with tanks.
The US has death penalty.
The US has for profit private jails.
And even if all of that was resolved, you still have Trump for president;-).
And, contrary to you, I can back all that with links.
Call me an idiot, but I'd take banned holocaust denial over that any day.
Sure, I can develop my own office suite, my own CAD system, my own photo editing SW, and run my own slashdot. With unicode support. And hookers.
Look, I do run systemd-free Linux distribution - Slackware. I support people around me, report bugs, I wrote documentation, etc. But if Patrick Volkerding stops maintaining Slackware, then I don't have resources to run my own distro. And if KDE becomes dependent on systemd, then Patrick does not have the resources either to maintain a fork.
Do you remember Italian Job? The thieves hacked the city traffic control to re-route a security transport vehicles to the place of their choice. They could also clear the escape path, block the cops, etc... Or what about Die Hard with a Vengeance - creating traffic chaos at one side of the city while robbing a bank on another side?
The simple fact is that Windows is the dominant operating system

Apart from update for the browser to reduce timer resolution - are there any Windows/Linux mitigations against Meltdown and Spectre that are safe to apply?

Would you kindly blast all that noise into your earplugs and leave the rest of the world in quiet?

I love the vagueness of the messages ;-)
The answer is "no" and "no". Don't expect the logic to come into that.
Emphasis mine. That's the crux of it. Are you sure that it will keep working after the update?
Google was only not caught yet.

On the other hand, it's probably a place with very low minor crime rate. What is the downside again?

Systemd. I.e. you develop something that looks attractive to 800lb gorilla and the decision makers who can override the will of the volunteers.

Whoa, wait a second! You can ... move the windows around? Why nobody told me?! Please, tell the Gnome developers too!
How useful is seeing the data if I can't stop them? At best it may be an eye opener. But that is far from the ideal situation.
