    Yup, times have changed.

Joe Sixpack is tired of hearing about linux and still doesn't have a clue about the universe's mysteries. Unless that involves believing in Angels and other religious stuff.

Physics is far more complicated than you give it credit for. So complicated that it can drive the Joe and Jane Sixpacks of the world back to theology, simply because it's easier to understand.

"Yes, look at the way everyone else in our corner of the world is subduing the rights of the people to be free from unreasonable search and siezure. We must do the same."

The only good that can possibly come of this is the new storage techniques which would be needed to keep available the ginormous ammount of data for four years. But the twelve seconds that it would take to come up with a solution and the half an hour it will be interesting don't compare to what it does to privacy rights.

Good times. Not moving to Austrailia, Denmark, or Ireland. I'm thinking Andorra. Little place on the border between Spance and Frain, minimal taxation, libertarian-capitalist-esque government. With skiing. Paradise.

Hey, if I were a boss, and if it only takes a small gesture with some material good to let my employees know that I am able to think of them as individuals, and that I appreciate them, then I see no harm. In fact, I see the antithesis of harm.

A generic gift like an extra vacation day could send the exact opposite idea: you're not as welcome here as you could be.

You do know that "on the order of $50/ea" means they cost between $5 and $500, right?

Yes, I do hypenate analretentive. ;-)

But seriously, if the employees are on the younger side, or have a kid, a gamboy and a game could be a great idea.

But the best idea would be to ask the employees what they want. Narrow it down first, though. I mean, questions like "what author do you want to read but never have?" or "do you have a favorite bar you go to after a hard day at work?" would give an idea what the employees want (books, gift certificate to a particular resturant, etc). But, and this is a big but, if it's a small company, the boss or middle management should already know these things, asking the questions too close to Christmas may seem tacky to some. Particularly if managment is usually aloof.

  5. They might already get holiday bonuses. on Company Gift Time Again? · · Score: 2

Say you're getting a $1000 Christmas bonus, would an extra $20 make that much of a difference? But say that $20 was used to show that your boss was considerate enough to think about you. It's entirely possible that this kind of a gesture might make someone feel appreciated. This is probably the goal here.

  6. Re:2 best gifts on Company Gift Time Again? · · Score: 2

This is a pretty neat idea. It also seems to show that the boss is thinking about each employee individually. The idea could be expanded to include music/video/book stores or magazine subscriptions.

I wouldn't mind a gift certificate to the local used book store. The one with lots of math books -- better selection than everywhere but the university's science library.

You know, this might be in addition to the regualr holiday cash bonus. Maybe something a manager wants to give his underlings to show his appreciation -- it is a small company. Honestly, a thoughtfully chosen, and inscribed card might fit the bill.

If you're already getting the bonus, what else would you like from your boss?

You want a plausible cause? Okay, here goes. Both nanotech and VR were developed, one dominated, bad things happened because of it. Someone was sent back to kill the lead developer of the technology before some important discovery is made. Then the other technology dominates, someone is sent back... It only has to happen once since both women are at the respective conferences at the same time, on the same timeline, no infinite loops reqired.

I'd hazard a guess that emacs and vi fall under "associated bits."

Just because I've used them doesn't mean that I feel the need to be fanatical. I prefer 0.7mm HB leads in my mechanical pencil, but I won't snub a pink pen if that's all that's handy.

But, that said, I never understood why people compaired vi and emacs. They seemed like comparing apples and llamas. They both do what they're supposed to -- and rather well I might add -- but they've evolved into two different things.

The reason, I suspect, that knowledge of the emacs vs. vi holy war is so widespread is that -- like in most religions -- the most vocal people on the subject are those of the fanatical minorities. And the rest of us encourage them because we find the show interesting. A good flamewar is like a cross between a summer night of fireworks and an automobile accident: very colorful, and you morbidly can't help but watch.
