Good luck, Ms.Geek... hope you can take the slimeball out of the picture. I think every state's got 'em (I know we do here in SC), and it is tough to vote them out of office. They get so much campaign money from folks like the RIAA and the MPAA that they can darn near buy their votes to get re-elected. It's time to turn the boat over and see who can swim back to shore. I'm ready to swim!
Nope, Danse, write to him and explain why you intend to campaign against his sorry ass next election. And then do it to the best of your abilities. Those reps can be bought fairly cheaply, but not cheaply enough for most of us to afford them. The RIAA and MPAA can get them into bed for what looks like nickles and dimes to us, and not bat an eye. Best letter to write is to tell him what a scumbag son of a bitch he has turned out to be, and that you will be fighting his ass next election. And then do it.
Oookay... Sulli, please educate me on this. Find in the US Constitution ANY damn justification for this, either in the original document or in the Amendments. If you don't find any, read the 10th Amendment. ONE of us should become enlightened.
The real world is not always pretty, but it is educational. If you don't want your children exposed to the sometimes ugly but always educational "real world", keep them out of libraries and schools and the world in general. You have no right to blind my children to things you don't want your children to see. I'd like my kids and grandkids to get an education without having to work around such fascist crap. We WILL work around it though, if that's what it takes.
There is NOTHING more obscene than censorship.
This time our Supremes have trod upon the toes of the Constitution. This is not acceptable. At some point they will learn; meantime, we shall have to live with their ineptitude. That's a damned shame.
I'm a rather old guy, past half a century, and an old Bob Dylan, Byrds, Beatles, Peter, Paul & Mary etc. fan. I bought a lot of vinyl in my earlier days, and it was great to be able to compile a cassette of exactly what I wanted and listen to it anywhere I wanted. I demand that ability now, only now I'd prefer to put it on a CD. Anybody got a problem with that?
The "album" hasn't died, but most of the people making them now are pretty sick. There are some notable exceptions (Tom Petty comes to mind), but most of the crap being recorded these days isn't worth flushing down a toilet. The main reason I don't buy CDs anymore is that I am unemployed and just can't afford them. However, another thing that will prevent me from buying them is if they can't be played/copied on my computer. If I ever buy a "copy protected" CD, you can bet your ass the store will get it back and I will get a refund. And may God help the sonofabitch who tries to block my refund.
This stuff is really hard to call. What amazes me is that we left them a damn computer! What the hell were we thinking? We should have known better than that!
I don't think I bought a CD last year. I've bought a 3-disk set and an individual CD from Janis Ian's Website this year, and am delighted with them. I've never seen her live, but hope to do so on her next tour. I used to buy a lot of used CDs from a local store, but they changed hands and no longer have them... as far as I know there is nowhere in town to find them now. But no, if I know that the RIAA or the major lables have anything to do with it I will not buy it new. It just encourages the bastards.
Hatch isn't going to blow up the RIAA. Think of it this way, if you were a dog and somebody bought you, took you home, fed you and petted you, would you be inclined to bite them? The RIAA bastards can piss away more money buying senators than most of us can, so the senators and congresscritters are brown-nosing the hell out of them. I agree, anyone running for office and proposing to limit copyrights to 14 years would get my serious attention, but the deed wouldn't get done. The candidate (most likely) would be outfunded and loose the election, or once in office would be well-paid by the RIAA and MPAA to shut the fuck up.
"Those guys deserve to get paid, they work their asses off for it." Right you are, but if they are waiting to get paid by the RIAA or various record companies they've got a long damn wait. If I can buy music directly from an artist's site I may buy it, but buying anything that has anything to do with the RIAA is out of the question. It's time "We, The People" sent THEM a cease and desist order. They have outlived their dubious usefulness to artists and consumers alike.
How about: "Dear Senator (down the) Hatch: Go fuck yourself. Do it today!" The idiot Senator needs to be taught a lesson, and it can only be taught to him by voters. I don't live in Utah so there is nothing I can do, but I hope the folks who live there can blow his fascist ass out of office. If anyone fucks with MY computers and I can identify them, I will hunt them down and kill them. Period. Fighting me on this is not a fight you really want to join. Do I make myself clear?
Uart, I'm not suggesting diminishing the value of a copyright, but the TIME limit has become rediculous. Yes, copyrights are crucial to encouraging songwriters, authors, software writers, etc. to continue producing their work. But what the hell should they care if their copyright expires when they die? Let their damn kids earn their money just like they did! Work for it! That philosophy is why we have libraries all over the country now... instead of giving all his wealth to his kids, Carnagie gave it to a foundation to build libraries.
I can't go with that. The copyright runs for 50 years, and you can pay $1.00 for ANOTHER 50 years? The damn copyright should not have run that long to begin with. Sonny Bonehead should be exhumed, shot, and re-buried so we can be damn sure that he's dead. The thinking of that sonofabitch is a damn disgrace to our society. And any politician who supported that bill should be voted out of office for stupidity, and then tarred and feathered and ridden out of town on a rail.
Don't hold the RIAA/DRM/patent nonsense against computers... place the blame where it lies. It's the sons of whores in politics who create and maintain the problem. May a pox befall all their chickens. I'd love to kick Sonny Bono's ass, but unfortunately he seems to have bit the dust. The world is a better place without him, but I still sort of miss the opportunity of kicking his ass.
I hope you're right and that Sweden shoots this abortion in the ass (and ditto for all other EU countries). It's a bit hard for me to imagine a country joining the EU in the first place, but to follow this path is utter stupidity. I live in the US, and what has been done here should serve as a warning to other nations... it just isn't a good idea to try to cap technology. There is nothing that can be done to stop it, so if you'd like to save your ass, get the hell out of the way. Technology WILL proceed, and may God have mercy on the souls of those who attempt to stand in its way.
Curbed, hell, it opened up a whole new industry! Prohibition *may* have reduced the use of booze, but lots of people who had never made any of their own (homebrew, moonshine, whatever) started a thriving business doing just that. My Father used to sell it at the gate of the cotton mill in his hometown, and made a pretty good buck off it. At the time the mill wasn't hiring and that was about the only decent job in town. Most of the 'shine wasn't fit to drink back then... it might very likely kill you... but people drank it anyway because that was all they could get.
Exactly... the only "law" that winds up making much difference is the law of supply and demand. If the demand is there, someone will provide the supply. It's that damn simple. Government cannot successfully fly in the face of the truth.
I believe in capitalism; I do NOT believe in Facism. I'm an old Saab and Volvo freak and have thought highly of Sweden for a long time, but if they pass this piece of shit law they will have lost my respect. Damn, I thought the US had some dumbass legislators (and we do) but Sweden might just be out-dumbassing us. That will take an enormous amount of skill and imagination, but they might just pull it off.

"Why not just join a Zen monastery". Or just drink more coffee, beer, and bourbon, as the need prevails. I'm not making light of this problem, as I take it very seriously. But when I was growing up they didn't have docs who diagnosed ADD. Back then parents and teachers just called us a pain in the ass, and beat the hell out of us. I quickly learned to drink more coffee, beer, and rum. My tastes have since changed to good bourbon, and I haven't beat the hell out of anyone in years. I'm getting old so I hope I never have to do that again. -All the best, -Alph
Oh, and AC of 21 years, I'll join you in your 1-finger salute to that damned incompetent doctor. Some of those bastards do a lot more harm than good, and yours sounds like a case in point.
