is it that hard to configure a firewall to explicitly allow outgoing traffic rather than allow all? It seems that everyone thinks that the only bad traffic is the stuff coming in from the outside...
I hope that none of "those appointed over me" see this, but it is things like this that make it so hard to keep on fighting for this country. I live in a tent for six months out of my life and live seperated from my family and friends and eat sucky food and shower with other dudes just so when I get home, those I am fighting to protect get more of their "American" freedoms taken away.
On the other hand, your everyday "American" won't take the time to get involved in the issues. Most won't even get off their duffs to vote once every two years or so. How many people are out there telling people about their freedoms and rights being taken away and how many are writing their congress person? How many care beyond how much is taken out of their pay check? You can't even get people to get involved with local government when those issues affect them directly!
You see, I have a hard time being out here suffering for people who don't care enough for themselves to make a stand against our leaders taking away the freedoms we fight to protect. I guess it all comes down to protecting the system and the freedom of our leaders to take away the freedoms of the people...however messed up that might be.
As an example, I think it's the only SF series I can recall that even attempted to use something resembling realistic physics in its spaceflight sequences.
I think B5 was out before Space: Above and Beyond, but that series also used close to "real world" physics for its space "flight" scenes also.
Holy shit...someone else sees the IMers the same way I do! I'm so glad I don't work help desk and deal with them.
90% of all IM troops are desert queens in waiting...
Oh...btw, I whole heartedly agree about MS 0wning.gov. I have to wonder how long it would take the DoD to make a switch to a different OS. They already teach a weeks worth of unix in 3c0 school. Why not in every tech school?

I am in the USAF, but to much of my dismay, much of my time is spent working with Windows. Thankfully, part of my job is dealing with our firewalls (which are unix based), but I still have to deal with Windows on all of the workstations and when helping the other shops out, fixing windows problems and other MS product related issues on NT and 2000 servers.
At home, I use Windows 2000 because my wife doesn't like Linux. She doesn't get the whole community or the challenge or the fact that it just isn't Microsoft. There are plenty of times I hear her bitch about how the computer (Windows) wouldn't do this or that, but when I mention that there is an alternative, she promptly replies,"I don't like that black screen stuff." I still have my other computer running Debian and I have a laptop dual booting (it's the AF's) Mandrake and 2000, but the fact that she has to hit scroll lock twice to change over to the 2k machine is enough hassel for her.
At this point, I can't give her a good enough reason for her to learn something else, especially when she can do everything she wants in Windows. My justifications just don't work for her. I am a completely different sort of user than her, not to mention I am always wanting to learn something new. Until I can convince her otherwise, I will continue to use Windows when I have to and Linux when she doens't want to get on the computer any time soon.
Have it in the hardware makes it much harder to (1) reverse engineer and (2) isn't as succeptible to user space exploits. Imagine someone writing some software that made the encryption for some reason null...this isn't so much of a factor with hardware.

You obviously have no idea how much Secret level classification is used. Top Secret is by definition supposed to be used sparingly. This is great for those of us who are admins of secret networks! Top secret is a whole other animal which I could care less about (until I have to). When I get to implement this, I'll let you guys know what it's like.
Or just go to CompUSA or Bestbuy and get a replacement plan...when your card gets "outdated" a year or two from now, take the "broken" card in and get your store credit so you can get the latest and greatest (available on the retail sales floor)
That's why you get a distribution where you can upgrade/update more easily via net (ex. Debian w/ apt or Gentoo with portage). I haven't burned a full cd install of linux in a looong time.
