    Well ebay instituted similar policies in 2008 and 9 to discourage small-time sellers (i.e. people like us selling used games, videos, whatever), and there was widespread protest on the forums, but nothing changed. eBay simply deleted the negative posts, banned people with repeated "This is bad policy" postings, and nothing changed. Now the portal has become a place that favors big businesses with deep pockets.

    And all the people cleaning out the garage, like me, went to craigslist. So, where is 3rd life? (shudder)

    The vast, vast majority of criminals are caught either because of stupidity on their part or someone squealing.

    A cop friend of mine used to say that "All criminals are stupid." Until I replied with, "No. Just the ones you meet."

    That was my point. If enough people who "think a 3rd part vote is a wasted vote" and just don't vote at all, suddenly start voting Libertarian (or whatever) they may become the major party, nudging out one of the others. That was how the Whigs started. They were an offshoot of a major party that was no cutting it for many of the members...

    Afterwards, both went on to become a major party. In the beginning it was the Federalists vs. the Democratic-Republicans.

    You know who I blame for this? YOU(me). When was the last time any of us rioted in the streets to stop this kind of BS? been a while huh? wonder why the Gov. can pass anything they like on a whim? The only people they answer to is themselves.

    April 15th, July 4th, and September 12th. But it wasn't really a riot, and the numbers vary based on who is telling the story...

    This is the problem with have in politics today. You do not have to be good, or compliant to win. Just not %otherparty. I have had enough of this, and that is why I did not vote for McCain. The little (r) was not enough, and I refuse to vote for people just because they do not eat babies.

    (For the record, I voted Libertarian this time.)

    All you and your gun nut buddies end up doing is drive up the sale of No Handguns Allowed signs. That and create 'friendly-fire' casualties when you overreact.

    With all these "friendly fire casualties" you talk about, you would think one would make the paper. But all I see is Fort Hood, Virginia Tech, and so on... All gun free zones. I guess the didn't have enough signs.

    That was the point of my original post. Fort Hood is a gun free zone. So are many places I have to go from day to day. So do a break the law and stay safe, or obey the law and be unarmed when the crazed gunman comes?

    But I should have known that no one would get it. People don't even read the articles... Asking them to know facts is a little much.

    But I also think there's some scare tactic behind these "how vulnerable we really are" news. I think I've read about these power grid hackers several times on slashdot alone.

    Some are fearmongering... Some are brainstorming... :)

    I consider this a good law. AAA and other organizations have shown that even hands-free cellphone usage reduces reaction time, such that you are a worse driver than an alcoholic. People shouldn't be using cellphones in cars except for emergencies.

    The problem is that there is no region that has nothing anyone wants. And malware, spam, botnets, come from everywhere.

    Something tells me that it will be harder to download the game hardware itself. And yes, you can buy it online, but there is a huge "I want it NOW!" market that online and shipping will never satisfy. But the margins will have to come down on many things, and value (Expertise perhaps) will have to go up.

    Personal voicemails from google voice have shown up in public searches. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/20/google_voice_indexing/ Why attribute it to malice when mistakes work just as well?

    If you skip version you will have some significant problems, and if the next version is not LTS, eventually you will have to skip versions. Fro example, try and update a Feisty box today. The next step is Gutsy and it is gone.

    There are a few problems here...

    The first is that online and off line are coded totally differently, so the OO team would be starting from scratch in an already established market.

    The second is availability. Just because it is on the Internet doesn't mean it always will be. Just ask some of the people caught in the Sidekick, T-mobile, Danger, Microsoft data loss.

    And of course there is trust. Do you trust Google to never "search" your data? They have voice-mails on-line now... And Microsoft can be trusted, right?
