    I think most of their lost profits are from people negotiating lower prices because of the Linux alternative, not so much that people are actually choosing Linux.

    Q1 -- Jim, thank you for your support in talking with LinuxDevices today. Do you think it was really Linux that hurt Microsoft? Or was it the emergence of netbooks? XP seems to ship on most, but Microsoft isn't making much money selling XP for low-cost PCs [story], are they?

    A1 -- When an OEM negotiates a price agreement with Microsoft, they now have a viable alternative. It changes the negotiating relationship. It's a combination of Linux, missteps by Microsoft, and not enabling Vista for a low-power, long battery-life device.

    I wonder if you can be modded insightfull for "insights" from the article? No one reads them anyway...

    There have been a couple of economic crises in Microsoft's history, but no one was let go. Admittedly, this one may be worse, but it is not unprecedented.

    Vista is hated. Weather it is a technical failure or a PR failure is moot. No one wants it. And XP64 is not really functional at all. And God help you if you run a lot of general use software on either. The point is that the cliff is looming, and there is still not a clear winner. It could be that the economy is doing what no one else could; Slowing down the consumer.

    Then maybe you can answer me one question, and it's a honest one, I couldn't find it: How do you print in MSO 2007?

    While we are at it, how about removing Start -> Run in vista? Now try and bring it up with an old keyboard and no Windows key. (I know... No system with a keyboard that old can run Vista, but it is hypothetical, OK?)

    Now the fate of 64bit future is being determined...

    Not really off topic. XP can not really do 64 bit. Vista is a resounding failure. 3.2-3.5 gig is not enough memory. If Win7 is not a solid product, Microsoft will loose the workstation and power user market.

    It's slow as hell. as one of those that have ran it, I'll tell you right now. the speedy feel of the XP days will never EVER come back, until your computer has way more processing speed and data channel speeds that exceed what the newer Microsoft OS's will use.

    Not true... It just won't come from Microsoft. Linux, Solaris, *BSD, and Apple all have that snappy feel. Maybe Microsoft should look at the code in Linux. It is open... ;)

    So true. I have some expensive video hardware. It works. If my hardware doesn't work with your service, it is your service which is broken, not my hardware. And I will not use any service that requires a remote to some magic box to change channels. There is too much competition. At worst, there is over the air, and Pirate Bay. The price for that one is rather attractive too!

    Some were... A person named Skidvid put together a list of the "Top 30 Most Famous Music Videos Ever" and it is quite a lot of real art, not just the music. You can find almost all of them on Youtube, but perhaps some Warner property will start dropping off. Anyone know of a different place to watch them? I wonder what Google says...

    They are too big to be allowed to fail. They employ too many people, and drive the economy. They provide a vital cultural contribution.

    ... given the volume of clearly throw away domains in ".cn" consisting of five or six random letters for domain and subdomain being used to spam replica jewelry, pills and porn I've been seeing for the last few months. It might well be the world's second most popular .TLD, but it's also quite probably the world's biggest virtual sewer as well.

    I wonder where it would rank if countries saw their ccTLDs in a similar vein to the more tangible aspects of their country like cities, natural features and the like. I'm pretty sure we'd see a little more care being taken to prevent such obvious abuses of ccTLD registration processes for a start...

    But how can you tell if the yrtdvdvhwg.cn is a random phishing site, or an ASCI representation of Chinese characters? I am sure that the .cn domain is heavily represented by both.

    I was more talking about devs that keep trying to block nvidia, or block blobs, or block whatever. For example, Fedora 10 and nvidia with 3D... That is the attitude I am against. And many of my systems have Intel graphics. They have some major problems as well. Dell GX260s with intel graphics and going from grub splash to GDM with a crash come to mind. There is no prefect choice. But I still want to make that choice myself.
