It seems that people have been making very similar arguments to this about all aspects of computing for decades. Until recently it was always with the amount of memory or CPU speed.

Basically it's summarised as "Why should we make X run Y faster when we can just optimise Y?"

It's just a ridiculous argument. Obviously you should always try and optimise the software, but why shouldn't everything else run faster as well?

  2. Apple have the WORST warranty repair service on Large-Scale Mac Deployment? · · Score: 1

I have never experienced repair service as bad as Apple.

I have Applecare, which I think is incredibly expensive, but it's lucky I do because the GPU on my laptop has broken for the second time in 2 years. Being the GPU that's broken it's pretty obvious what is wrong so I figure I'll just take it into the Apple store and drop it off. Oh No! It doesn't work that way. You have to book in with one of their "Genius" technicians to have a look at it. Unfortunately they are all booked out for the next 3 days with people who can't work out how to use their mouse. So that's the first delay to getting anything repaired by them.

So finally my laptop is taken to be fixed and they tell me, "Yes there is a problem, we have to replace the motherboard". Which is fair enough. That was over 3 weeks ago now and I still have no word on when it will be done. They quoted me 30 days to fix it. 30 DAYS!!

That is NOT acceptable. During this time I am unable to do any work at all. The equivalent Dell warranty is cheaper, and their service is light years ahead of Apple. That is something that should be causing Apple massive amounts of shame, and yet in the 12 months between services absolutely nothing has been changed.

I use Mozy. It's cheap and easy. They are also owned by EMC so I'm not too worried about them going under. I only use a laptop so I don't have to worry about having a usb disk permanently dangling from it, or having to remember to plug it in periodically. I get unlimited storage so no worrying about storage allotment. My broadband connection is fast enough that it will backup any large changes overnight at the longest.

It also gives you the added advantage of being off-site, which all reliable backup systems should have as a component. So no worrying about house fires etc. This brings us to the interesting use case they are currently milking where a guy who was on the Hudson river crash used Mozy and his data was perfectly safe, whereas another guy lost both his laptop and USB backup to the bottom of the river.

I may be sterile as well, I've never had children so I don't know. Does that mean I may not be alive? Of course not. I am made of cells, those cells are able to reproduce. I am a collection of living entities that happens to work in a symbiotic relationship to create a larger more complicated living entity. It's the same with a Mule.

Fire is a different argument. When I was at school I was taught that one the definition of life included 'Was made of cells' which immediately excluded viruses and fire. That has probably changed now though.

That's competition. If I ran a business I will not hire inferior employees just because they are the same nationality as me. I will hire the ones who will do the best work for my company. If the country I live in is not providing the best skilled workforce then tough shit. It is in my company's best interest to always hire the best no matter where they come from.

I would estimate half the employees in the company I currently work for are foreigners, including myself. It wasn't planned that way. No one was deliberately shipped in from overseas to work there, they just happened to be the best candidates.

You completely misunderstand me. As I said in another reply I am not talking about the cheap labour that has been out-sourced to india. This article seems to be about the people who are working in the US on a visa. In otherwords they are no cheaper than native US workers.

These people are being hired solely on their skill not on how much cheaper they are. That is where the competition is. So why should a company be forced to fire the more skilled labor just because they are not locals?

  15. Re:Require pay and benefits parity on Microsoft Says H-1B Workers Among Those Losing Jobs · · Score: 1

I thought this article was about firing the foreigners first, just because they are foreigners.

In other words they move to the country and get paid the same as what the local people get paid. This is not about out-sourcing the labor to a cheap country.

As an Australian living and working in the UK I would be pretty pissed off if I was fired while less skilled people get to keep their job just because they are English.

To link this back to my previous post I get quite annoyed when people say that immigrants like myself are 'stealing jobs' from the locals. I'm not. I was hired because my skills were better. That is what competition is about. If you can't compete then you should improve your skills, then the 'job stealing foreigners' like myself would not be able to steal your jobs.

Here I was thinking that our society is supposed to be built on competition. If you can create a scompany that can compete and be successful then that's good.

Why should it be different for a country? If they can't compete by providing the skilled labour necessary why should a company be forced into 'purchasing' the less skilled labor?
