You are thinking small. Ask how many dump trucks full of money.
Microsoft may consider it worthwhile to throw money at developers to keep them from working for google.
Of course some people are going to choose Microsoft over Google. Just like there are some people that like wasabi flavored ice cream. There are freaks everywhere.
Why bother with a PDA when smart phones do everything just as well.
As for their smartphone offerings, the PalmOS tried to maintain backwards with early Palm systems compatibility while the others could start from scratch.
A large percentage (I'm thinking around 50%) of all pregnancies end in abortion.
Actually, spontaneous abortion within the first trimester, with the majority showing up as a heavy period. Most women wouldn't even realize they were pregnant because they wouldn't have done a pregnancy test by then (unless they were trying to get pregnant).
Should we aim to prevent all of those spontaneous abortions?
That is assuming that an embryo is a distinct lifeform from it's mother.
When you are talking about potential life, every sperm cell has the potential for a unique life, as does every egg.
Is cellular division and genetically different from the parent all that is necessary for distinct life? I hope not, otherwise we shouln't be excising cancer and allowing it to die.
How about we define life as independent brain activity?
When an embryo/fetus develops independent brain activity (easy enough to see with current medical equipment), we call it alive and give the embryo/fetus a right to live. Until then it is simply a mass of cells (no matter how complex) with the potential for life.
With you working for codeweavers (which produces the excellent Crossover Linux package), do you see a conflict of interest in wine not directly supporting MSOffice 2K at the gold level?
As a related question: How do you decide which portions of the code you write goes to wine and which are crossover-specific?
Every time java comes up as a near-dying language, people sprout up saying that there are plenty of java jobs out there. That it's still in high demand.
Why aren't there more open source applications written in java?
The only one I can think of off the top of my head is azureus (now zune), which is not exactly known for it's small resource footprint. In the closed source freeware realm, jalbum is available and quite nice to use.
Both of these are a pain in the ass to install under Ubuntu, by the way. Jalbum makes you manually find the java runtime environment on installation, while azureus packages for Ubuntu either don't work or quite outdated.
Reading the letter, it really doesn't sound like anything Gates would say. He's not an end user. As you said, he certainly should know why rebooting would be necessary when updating part of the OS.
That being said, Gates has nothing to worry about in regard to his personal reputation. There is no need for him to "talk himself up". Outside of the slashdot community and certain parts of the tech industry, he is highly regarded as a successful businessman and as a philanthropist.
My parents spoon fed me loads of crap, how am I supposed to seperate the truth (shouldn't run around naked in public) from all the lies (go to church or you'll go to hell)? Interesting. I'm not sure why running around naked in public is a bad thing. You might get a cold, but no worse that if you go running around in swimming trunks. Maybe because there's a risk of snagging yourself on something?
Agree./. has been relatively consistent over the past ~6-7 years that I have been reading. There are less articles about distros, but that's because there has been more of an aggregation of users among the "super distros".
Tech articles are still very good. In fact, all the discussions are very good, so long as you read +1 formative/insightful, -1 funny, and -5 troll.
A few months ago I was going video editing on my desktop system, running Firefox2 (you know how much memory that takes!), and had amarok playing in the background.
Everything was working fine. No hiccups or anything.
A few weeks later the system died. When looking for a compatible motherboard and CPU for an upgrade, I was shocked to rediscover that my "workhorse" computer only had 512 MB of ram.
Didn't Stephen Colbert recently make fun of a Hillary Clinton aid for making threats at Tim Russert's dad, saying that they'll put him in heaven if Russert doesn't play nice with them? (Damn. It was just a week or two ago...)
Remember that version numbers are more of a marketing issue than a coding issue.
After all, where is Windows NT v1.0 and 2.0?

Except that the post you are replying to includes a reference that a person's attitude does not effect cancer survival.
I'm shallow, you insensitive clod!
Exactly how do you expect anyone to get the mercury out of the tuna?
While it is possible, what you will be left with would not have the consistency of tuna anymore.
(BTW, congrats on the +5 Insightful, troll.)
They lost because the PDA market itself imploded.
Why bother with a PDA when smart phones do everything just as well.

Doom.
Exactly. Do we need a specific law stating that every single idiotic thing is illegal?
Isn't that where the "reckless driving" law comes in play?
I guess that I'm in that "half of al /.ers" who never played any of the diablo games. *shrug*
Games are nice, but I can't believe half of all /.ers can agree any anything (besides reading /., apparently).
I feel for you.
The comments so far seem highly skewed by right-for-lifers, many of whom likely never had to deal with someone born with mental deficiencies.
When they (or their loved ones) get pregnant, they will want the best for their child. Why can't everyone else?
And if you can knowing choose to have a child without Down's syndrome... Well, who wouldn't choose the child without that chromosomal abnormality?
Finally, a rational response.
During in vitro fertilization, you never use up all the fertilized eggs.
Tumors do have unique DNA signatures.
As for beating heart and brain activity, at 6 weeks that is all reflex (just like stimulating a frog's leg with electricity to make it jump).
I wouldn't exactly call the frog's leg alive after it's been cut off from the frog, regardless of how much it twitches when stimulated with a shock.

Actually, I am trying to understand the subject. Never said I was a programmer. :-)
That being said, my question still stands. Eclipse, JBoss and (most of) the apache projects are really not tailored towards end users.
Where are the office apps, games, browsers, IM clients, etc. written in java?

Win98(SE)->XP was the general transition most users made.
Most home users were not running Win2K (after all, it was marketed towards businesses). WinME was avoided by everyone who knew better.
Can anyone put up a picture of the U.S. (and world) that highlights areas that find apple pies more interesting that orgies?
While the lack of previous seasons is a downmark, whatever hulu actually has is quite good.
The ads are not too long. The video quality is somewhat decent. They have a good selection of new shows, and a lot of old stuff as well.

No mention of it anywhere I looked on the mozilla site...
