I can't take credit. It's from a Robert Heinlein book. Except he was talking about property tax as opposed to IP tax. I'm pretty sure the book was _Number of the Beast_, but it's been a good 15 years since I've read it. :-)

Simple: The creator/owner sets a price for the intellectual property, and is taxed based on that price. If they want to change the price, they have to back-date taxes for 3 years. If a person wants to buy the intellectual property, it must be up for grabs for a certain multiple of the price the creator sets.

There is a demographic factor going on as well. A lot of we formerly reliable Windows zealots are now in our 30s and 40s, and suddenly money that would be spent on graphics cards and Windows upgrades is now getting plowed into our over-priced houses and our children. It's like, I would have stayed up in line to get Vista Ultimate the day it came out, but instead, I bought diapers, soy milk and a thomas the tank engine train set for my son. Having jonesed for some sort of an upgrade to my PC, I went with Ubuntu instead, and its pretty satisfying.
I didn't realize, but this is true for me as well. I don't have the time or patience to deal with MSWindows installations for relatives anymore. Ubuntu may not be ready for my family (or maybe it is), but Mac OSX certainly is.

Physicians are part of the service industry. If we don't serve, there are plenty of alternatives.

That being said, I've seen other medical offices in which their general policy is to avoid giving official documents to patients, in fear of litigation. My thought on the subject: A happy patient is less likely to sue, even if a mistake is made.

Also, there are packages available to run many MSWindows applications under different versions of Wine, each version emulating a different version of MSWindows all on the same Linux machine. ReactOS is an entirely new OS that is trying to emulate Win2K/XP. The Beta version (which should run all versions of MSOffice out-of-the-box) is supposed to come out this year.
