Originally The System was called Tandem, which ran an OS (or rather kernel )called "NonStop Kernel", they even have a database called NonStopSQL.
Later in S-series servers, the System got renamed to NonStop, the kernel got renamed to Guardian.
About loosing CPU,Memory/System Bus you are not even scratching the surface....With 2 systems operating in Tandem (hence the name),, you can even loose an entire system, and the other one takes over, and these 2 systems can have 2 geographically remote systems in tandem, giving you complete fault tolerence.
These systems talk to eachother over a proprietory network stack (defi. not TCP/IP) and do health monitoring. And uptime is measured in years, not months...
If you read my post again, I was not commenting on the shape of the atomic table , neither on the positioning of elements within.
I was merely pointing out that at some point in history the modern periodic table , (by modern , I mean the one based on atomic weight, not mandeleev's ) had gaps which were left as predictions of elements not yet discovered but were sure to exist , based on the periodicity of elements.
they should be, even the mandeleev and the modern periodic tables had gaps,
In the modern ones, the gaps were left for elements having that perticular atomic weight, but not yet discovered in nature.
I remember reading that a lot of elements along with their properties were predicted by scientist, based on the atomic table, a long time before they were actually discovered.
ever heard of local exploits ?
What I am saying is , chances of finding a local exploit to gain admin previledges in IE are much higher than in firefox
Let's not forget, Firefox is not embeded in the OS, that itself makes is much secure (by design) than IE. e.g. In future it may be possible to discover a way to gain administrative previledges thru IE, even when running with a non previledged a/c, chances of that happening with firefox, atleast by design look slim.
Yes it would have , if the GGP was in fact calling IBM stupid, which I can assuredly say, he wasn't.
It was a rhetorical question, meaning to imply he doesn't think IBM is stupid.
Therefore the expected result is not "IBM is stupid", and therefore the actual result of the GP turning out to be stupid by making a spelling mistake, doesn't contradict the expected result, hence it is not irony....sigh
I remember a few years back when we had problems with one of our 0r@c13 Database. One of the tables had about 10 million records, and we had to run a complicated query that required a range scan.
The query was quite complicated, but analyzed and tuned to the best of our DBAs ability.
THe query would hang the listener every once in a while and then no connections could be made to the DB over that listner, the only solution was to bounce the DB all together.
When we called them for this problem, instead of looking at our query/db schema, all they said was try running the query with a few 100 records.
This was the response when we were paying them for a level 1 support and the problem was rated severe.
I just spent last 2 weeks trying to get Autoyast to work. The tool is so broken,
First off, some rpms such as autoyast-tools etc, are not in the main FTP tree, but in some guys personal Ftp foler. ftp://ftp.suse.com/people/XYZ/RPMs/9.3/...
Next the tool fails to validate the control file , it generates on its own. i.e if you use autoyast to generate a control file, it will generate an invalid file.
Oh what I would give to have a good Autodeployment tool for all RPM based distros, RHEL, Fedora , Suse, Mandriva etc.
And if you think Autoyast is a good configuration tool, you haven't looked at webmin. When you have to manage different kinds of linux distros (don't ask me why ), nothing comes close to webmin.
It is quite fast now, but run it on a dual core P4 with 2.5 Gigs of RAM, now that's quite a highend configuration.
I always keep trying new IDEs, but within a day or two end up going back to Vim, but eclipse is the only thing that I would even consider replacing Vim with for my programming.
my problem is with their CVS integration, if you use SSH for cvs access, it puts the repository as ":extssh:..." , instead of ":ext:..." , and this makes the repository incompatible with anyother CVS tool.
I used eclipse for about 3-4 months, but again I am back to Vim, but 3-4 months is a long time, as no other IDE gets more than a day.
I wish I had mod points to make your speculation come true.....just because you speculated so.
Seriously If you wish to post something insightful/informative, don't start it with..."I'll probably get moded down". Don't uderestimate others' ability to mod correctly or atleast meta mod correctly.
LateX differs from any other WYSIWYG typesetting editors, because it keeps content different from presentation.
If you are writing anything over 20 pages, neither OOo nor MS Word, nor Wordperfect will do. Trust me I wrote a 100 page document once in Word, absolute nightmare.
Latex has a learning curve, but once you have passed it, there is nothing close.
how so, they are not stopping anyone from making another anti-virus for *nix. Actually that's precisely their point of fustration with Open source products, they can't buy them off.
besides i had never even heard of this AV company before, and I suspect their *nix AV products were not exactly selling like hot cakes. So from a business POV this makes perfect sense.
Umm, Last time I checked Microsoft has no monopoly in the Anti-Virus market. Besides if you are talking about its monopoly in the PC OS market, this move hardly affects it one way or another.
This will be picked up by DOJ's anti-trust dept, only if they embed their AV in the OS and distribute it freely, making it harder for other AV companies like Nortan/Symantex to sell their products.
I am not their fan either, but they are withing their rights here, Besides who really needs a AV for unix anyway ?
Ofcourse your point about who owning the DOJ makes every thing moot.
Google Search of KDE Change Logs

I don't remember anyone suing RH for cutting the support for RH 9.x and before, or not releasing a binary of a new product for the RH platform.
Some how I think most /. would better associate with the later meaning of the word.
About tyring to be funny you are right, I was.
Vista, in Sanskrit means crap.

Is ironic the most misunderstood word or what ?
where have you been hibernating ..?
I work on Linux you insensitive clod.

How in the world is this off-topic ?
People say Tupac is a martyr , Biggie is a martyr, I say Martin Luther King was a martyr, Malcom X was a martyr, them 2 ni****ers got shot"

And no I am not new here.

I tried selling a hot steaming cup of mocca once, to a polar bear, he wouldn't buy it either.

Umm, wouldn't armageddon come first before Longhorn...and if armageddon does indeed come then we can safely say RMS taking a bath is not far away...
